He was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Rose Anton, of Los Angeles.
Anton attended public schools in Pasadena and Glendale. His early jobs while attending high school and college included pin setting at a bowling alley, tomato planting, olive gathering, gas station attendant, racehorse groom, warehouse clerk, bottling plant worker, newspaper sales, and working on Main Street at Disneyland.
He was a graduate of the University of Southern California with degrees in history, educational guidance and school administration, curriculum and instruction. At USC he was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity, Skull & Dagger, and was senior student manager of the Trojan baseball team. His 1964 doctoral dissertation, Outside Specialists and School Districts, contributed to the literature the need for reviewing purposes after consultants’ initial service and having follow-up coaching and peer support for recipients of consultants’ work.
After teaching in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Anaheim, he was a principal in El Toro and Garden Grove. He served as director of research in Garden Grove Unified and superintendent of Hillsborough City School District before coming to Stockton in 1972 to become superintendent of Lincoln Unified School District, a position he held until 1990. His life and activities became completely entwined and identified with Lincoln Unified. His leadership featured a student-centered district, high expectations, parent involvement, professional development and evaluation, accountability, fiscal solvency and integrity, transparency, quality student activities, authentic learning, and responding to changing conditions and needs. He had deep respect and appreciation for the Lincoln school trustees who served without compensation to set community standards and expectations. He was so proud of his colleagues: principals, teachers, classified staff, and district support personnel. He hailed the Lincoln Council PTSA as a major force in maintaining quality education.
Anton served as head cross country coach at Lincoln High School from 1987 through 2003. He loved his team members, their families, and his coaching colleagues, Steve Rapaport, Steve Overgaard, and Lynn Yanko. Summer training was a joy as were the annual running camps at Pt. Bonita. His teams had 151 victories in tournaments and section competition. Five teams and many individuals went to the state meet. The athletic complex at Lincoln High bears his name.
At his passing, Anton was professor of school administration emeritus at California State University, Stanislaus where he prepared teachers for school administration from 1990 through 2004. Over 320 of his students became school or district leaders.
Anton was an active member of the North Stockton Rotary Club serving as president in 1977-78. He maintained perfect attendance from 1972 to 2012. He loved working on Rotary literacy projects.
Professionally he was a charter member of the Association of California School Administrators. He was chair of its state conference in San Diego in 1981. He served as scribe for the State Superintendency Council from 1991-2012. In 1999 he was honored with ACSA’s Robert E. Kelly award for professional leadership; the attending $5,000 prize was assigned to the Lincoln Council PTSA for its scholarship fund. From 1972 to 2016 Anton served on 124 Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visiting committees for accreditation of schools in California, Nevada, Hawaii, China, Thailand, and Australia. He chaired 90 committees. He was a commissioner for the WASC Accrediting Commission for Schools from 1998-2004.
A marathon runner and participant in scores of road races, Anton was a member of the Sundance running club. He served on active duty in the United States Army in 1952-53; he was always grateful to his country and state for the GI Bill that enabled him to go to graduate school and secure a favorable loan for his first home. In retirement, Tod and Bobbie spent over 1900 days at sea traveling to world ports on cruise ships, their assisted living at sea. They enjoyed the lives of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Vincent James Santo - April 29, 1960 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: Vincent James Santo 4/29/60 – 3/17/2024
Vincent James Santo, aka brother Vinny, the eldest of five brothers, was a larger than life personality. He never cared what anyone else thought of him. If you were within an earshot of Vinny, you definitely heard him! He loved his family and Jesus more than anything, and he made it known by his loud voice and his heart. We all attributed this to his football days as a great athlete, and his years in the United States Navy. Brother Vinny had a heart of gold. After coming back home from his four years in the Navy and many years working in construction across the United States, he planted himself in Stockton, California.
He became caregiver to his handicapped younger brother Christopher and a helper to the “Santo Manor”. The Santo Manor would never have been the same without him. People were always greeted by Vincent’s “bulldog” personality and everyone loved him for it! He dedicated his life to his family and never wanted to leave them. He always sought the Lord and worked hard to help his mother Chloie and his father James. He took great interest in his nephew Steve, who is in the United States Navy, and was recently promoted to Chief; and devoted himself to his many nieces whom he loved so much and always needed to hear how they were doing. There are many men in this world, but Vincent was a true Man! He was a man who looked after his family before his own needs. Vincent James Santo will always live in our hearts and souls as brother Vinny. We love you Vinny!

Walter Yung-Wen Jiang - May 18, 1927 - March 05, 2024

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: Walter Yung Wen Jiang was born in the city of Weihai in the Shandong province of China. He was raised by his parents, Jiang Hui Qing and Li Qui Zhi, and had two brothers, James (older) and Francis (younger).
Walter’s upbringing was very difficult due to poverty. He grew up in a small fishing village at the back of a mountain. Most people in his village were poor. Walter only attended 4 years of primary school due to lack of money, but due to his studious nature, he always ranked in the top 3 in his class. When the Communist rule began in China and Walter was able to work, he moved to Shanghai to work at an alarm clock factory, making tools for alarm clocks. He was then transferred to being an assistant cook for the factory workers.
After about a year in Shanghai, Walter moved to Hong Kong and worked as a security guard for ships. After work, he attended night school to learn English. At 26 years old, he was able to attend Lichunjiang College and received his bachelor's degree in Economics. To further his English studying, he joined the Lutheran church, and eventually got a job with the Lutheran War Service, a company that provided aid for refugees. Walter initially worked as an adult English teacher, where he reconnected with his future wife Nancy. Walter was then promoted to Controller of Medical and Dental Eligibility. Walter and Nancy got married in Hong Kong and had four children while living there: Anna, David, Shane, and Stephen.
In an effort to come to America, Walter applied for a scholarship through the Lutheran church to become a Social Work Professional, and ultimately attended University of Missouri, receiving a Masters of Science in Social Work.
After graduating from graduate school, Walter moved to Kansas for one year of practical training at Kansas State Hospital as a Social Worker. Upon completing his degree and training, he returned to Hong Kong and got visas for his immediate family to move to America with him. In 1975, Walter applied for visas for his brothers and their families as well, in addition to Nancy’s three sisters. He became a US citizen, and brought his mother to the US too.
Walter, Nancy, and their four children then moved to Modesto, CA, where Walter continued working as a Hospital Social Worker. After moving to the US, Walter and Nancy had two more daughters, Jeanette and Cecilia, completing their family of 6. They then moved to Stockton, CA.
Walter and Nancy ultimately spent their later life together in Alameda, CA, spending time with their children and grandchildren. Walter has 13 grandchildren in total: Liza (daughter of Anna & Satoshi); Lauren and Riley (children of David & Grace); Chiron and Corvus (sons of Shane); Kaili, Tyson, and Tommy (children of Stephen & Sue Ping); Nico, Benji, and Ellie (children of Jeanette & Keith); and Taalia and Anjali (daughters of Cecilia & Manisha).
Walter was the pioneer of moving the Jiang family to America. Due to his rigorous work ethic and determination, he was able to set the foundation for his children, grandchildren, and extended family to build successful lives in the US. For that, we will always be grateful to him and inspired by his courage to move abroad for a better life for his family. It is because of his bravery and love that we are all here.
