Mom met our dad, Robert Horn, at Lodi High School, and on December 22, 1956, after her graduation, they were married in Lodi. Mom was more than a wonderful wife and mother; she was a 4H leader, PTA president, scored our little league games, taught Sunday School, cooked for and cleaned up after us and taught us how to perform those tasks along the way, and during harvest, she would climb and stand on top of 16-foot ladders to pick cherries. Being ever-loving, present, and active in raising us, the role she truly loved was that of being a Grandma to eleven grandchildren: Maggi, Samantha, Steven, Jacob, Nyna, Johanna, Alex, Rachel, Joseph, Jenna, and Ava. Mom was especially thrilled when Rachel gave birth to her daughter Margo, making Mom a great-grandmother. After they retired, Mom and Dad traveled around the lower 48 and twice to Alaska with their trailer in tow. Mom loved seeing all the new places, traveling with friends, and meeting new people, but mostly, she was in it for the adventure. Obituary Preview: Mary Bertha Rivera Ramos, a beloved mother, nana, sister, and friend, entered the Gates of Heaven on October 28, 2023. She was born on June 7th, 1952, in Pharr, Texas, and moved to Lodi at a young age. She was a Lodi High School graduate.
Bertha worked various jobs throughout her life, some of her favorites were working at the Tri-Valley Growers cannery, as a Bus Driver for the Lodi Grapevine, and as an attendant for Twins Arbors Athletic Club. She was a people person and loved being the center of attention. For the last 20 years, she dedicated all her time to her grandchildren.
Bertha was an amazing and loving mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and grandchildren, embracing every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Nana. Her children can attest to the fact that when it came to her girls (tootoos, turbo, and tater-tot), she had the “patience of a saint” and, in her eyes, could do no wrong. Always supportive and encouraging, always wise and kind, she was proud of them. She absolutely loved watching them on the playing field. She would wrestle them, crack jokes, or spend hours on the phone talking about life. Nana was their best friend.
Bertha had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She made friends everywhere she went. Her smile and humor were contagious. She was smart and excelled in everything she did. She was a big foodie and had an obsession with chicken chow mein.
Bertha was a woman of Faith and had a close relationship with God. She will be remembered as a selfless person who sacrificed her needs for the good of her family. Even when times were tough, she had a quiet strength, never complained, and filled our home with unconditional love. She lived every moment to the fullest until God called her home.
Bertha is survived by her children; Claudia Yesenia De La Cruz (Emiliano), and Pedro Ramos Jr. Her granddaughters; Mariah De La Cruz, Alexis De La Cruz, and Noelia Ramos. Her brothers; Oscar Rivera, and Fred Rivera (Irma). Her sisters; Becky Rivera, and Lupe Rivera. Along with many nieces and nephews.
Heaven gained an angel. Bertha was preceded in death by her daughter; Deanna Ramos, her parents; Max and Connie Rivera, her brothers; Max Rivera Jr., Fernando Rivera, and Ricardo Rivera. Her sister; Margo Rivera, her nieces and nephew; Rebecca Rivera, Melissa Ruiz, and Joey Gomez.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral or memorial services.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, online obituary platforms, funeral home websites, and social media. They may also be shared through email or printed copies distributed at funeral services.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or the number of publications.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your family may still need to add or modify information when the time comes.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It allows friends and family to share condolences, memories, and photos with each other online. Online obituaries often remain available for years to come, serving as a permanent tribute to the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or by contacting local libraries or historical societies. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched online or in-person.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help bring the person's story to life and provide a visual memory for those who are grieving.

What is a memorial website?

What is the purpose of an obituary in modern times?

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, humor can be included in an obituary if it was a characteristic of the deceased. A well-placed joke or anecdote can help bring comfort and smiles to those who are grieving.

How do I write an obituary for someone who was cremated?

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Can I write an obituary for someone who died under difficult circumstances?

Yes, it's possible to write an honest and compassionate obituary even if the person died under difficult circumstances such as addiction or suicide. Focus on celebrating their life and acknowledging their struggles rather than sensationalizing their death.

How do I handle criticism or negative comments about an online obituary?

If you encounter criticism or negative comments about an online obituary, try not to engage with them directly. Instead, focus on supporting those who are grieving and celebrating the life of the deceased.

Can I update an online obituary after it's been published?

Yes, most online platforms allow you to update an obituary after it's been published. This can be useful if new information becomes available or if there are changes to funeral arrangements.

What is the significance of including survivors in an obituary?

Including survivors in an obituary acknowledges their loss and provides important context about the deceased's relationships and family dynamics. It also helps readers understand who will carry on their legacy.
