Jim Bartelma - October 05, 1945 - July 01, 2023

Departed: 07/01/2023 (Prairie City)
Obituary Preview: Jim Bartelma, 77, of Runnells, passed away on July 1, 2023, from injuries sustained in a vehicle collision. He was born in 1945 to Dan and Jean (McFadden) Bartelma, and graduated from Runnells High School before studying Agriculture at Iowa State. A man of quiet principle and quick wit, he was fortunate to see a lot of the world but always called Runnells home.
Jim devoted a good share of his life to the family farm established by his father, an operation he steadily grew and improved with long days of work and a keen mind for business. A farmer and rancher through and through, Jim loved the change of seasons, hated thorny brush, and always knew the weather forecast.
Jim’s love of the land was matched by his love of the sky. He joined the Iowa Air National Guard in 1966, where he flew fighter aircraft including the A-7 and F-100. He served as Commander of the 124th Tactical Fighter Squadron and retired as a Colonel after 30 years of service. Jim’s military career took him to interesting places around the world and introduced him to lifelong friends – including Cynthia, who became his wife in 1971.
Jim and Cynthia shared 52 loving years and raised three kids together on the farm – his “most important crop.” He felt truly lucky in life. He loved his work, took pride in his kids, and found satisfaction in giving his grandkids popcorn and ice cream for breakfast. Jim was curious about new places and new ideas – in recent years he and Cynthia roadtripped through New Zealand and Spain, toured farms across South America, and jetted to Dubai and Hong Kong – but he also saw value in old things. After retiring as a fighter pilot, Jim restored a 1946 Aeronca Champ two-seater airplane, which he used to check the cattle, and he was in the process of restoring a 1950 Chevy pickup.
He is survived by Cynthia and their three children, Greg (Becky) of Runnells, Jeff (Jess Ng) of San Francisco, and Katy (Sean Boyce) of Washington, D.C; five grandchildren; his sister, Connie Banks; and a large, close-knit extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carole Holcomb.

Robert John Cummings - July 26, 1942 - May 30, 2023

Departed: 05/30/2023 (Prairie City)
Obituary Preview: Robert John Cummings, known by most people as Bob, passed from this world on May 30, 2023. As he loved to sing, “this world is not my home, I’m just a passing thru”. He was born on July 26, 1942 in Pennsylvania, son of Edwin and Elva Cummings (Steiner). Bob grew up on his family’s farm in Pennsylvania. He then lived for a span of time in Missouri and Iowa where he married Shirley Armstrong and started his family. After his parents died from injuries sustained in a car accident, Bob moved his family to the farm in Pennsylvania. Bob and Shirley’s children were Michael, Mark and Sarah. During his time in Missouri, Bob became a licensed barber; a skill he used for many years. He also served as an evangelist in the Church of Christ. Shirley died of Cystic Fibrosis in 1980. After her death, Bob continued his education while raising his young family. He graduated in the early mid 80’s from the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown (UPJ) with a degree in engineering, but then made the decision to work on his farm instead of taking a job in the city so his children would have a parent at home. Bob valued hard work and spent his time raising cows, goats, chickens and other animals. He also logged trees on his 80 plus acres of land. He served as an elder at Bolivar Church of Christ. In 1989, Bob married his second wife Nancy Weaver and their family grew to include her children, John, Anna and Joseph. Later, Katrina was born from that union. Nancy died of ALS in 1997. In December of 1998 Bob married Sharon Gilmer, his third wife, with whom he lived the rest of his life here. Bob was known by his family for his love of singing. We’re sure he is singing a lot now... songs such as, “Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, thru his infinite mercy, His child and forever I am.” Those lyrics are from a favorite song of his. Bob and Sharon enjoyed caring for children in their home through the foster care program. However, Bob suffered a life changing stroke in 2012. He and Sharon sold the farm to one of Dad’s closest friends in 2013 and then moved to Iowa. Bob loved working on puzzles and embroidering quilts to give as gifts; many have been blessed by his beautiful handiwork. Needlework was something he could still do to keep busy after the stroke had limited his speech. But he’s talking now…we’re sure of it; and we praise God for that!
Bob is preceded in death by his parents and siblings – Marvin (Genevieve), Glenn (Jean), Wilma (Johnny), Don and 2 babies. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley; his 18-year-old son, Mark; his second wife, Nancy; and his daughter-in-law, Joy. He is survived by his third wife of almost 25 years, Sharon; his younger brother Duane (Pat); his children - Michael, Sarah (Matthew), Katrina (Tyler); grandchildren – Morgan, Drew (Miriam), Casady, Ethan and Robin; cousins, and many nieces and nephews. Bob’s number one priority in all his life has been serving his Lord. He loved, he laughed, he lived; and because of Jesus he lives still! Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Vandalia Church of Christ. Visitation will be on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm also at the church. Burial will take place at Vandalia Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Vandalia Church of Christ and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com
