Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends, family, and acquaintances of the death, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt account of their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary can provide more details about the person's life, but it may also incur additional costs for publication.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and provide a visual representation of the person being honored.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the newspaper. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any accompanying photos or payment information.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and leave a lasting message for loved ones.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It is typically published on a website or social media platform and can include multimedia elements such as photos, videos, and audio clips.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is difficult to make significant changes to an obituary once it has been published. However, some online platforms may allow for corrections or updates. It's essential to proofread carefully before submission to ensure accuracy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals that include additional services like online hosting.

Are there any guidelines for writing an effective obituary?

Yes! A good obituary should be concise, clear, and respectful. Use proper grammar and spelling, avoid clichأ©s and overly sentimental language, and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than mourning their death.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an excellent way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to use good taste and avoid offending anyone who may be reading.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to approach them with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before including potentially controversial information.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

You can share an online obituary through social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, via email or messaging apps, or by providing a direct link to friends and family members.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. Instead, you might mention that a private ceremony will be held or that memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers.

Absolutely! Quotes or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary, especially if they were significant to the deceased or reflect their personality.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, verify all facts with multiple sources whenever possible. Double-check dates, names, and spellings before submitting the final draft.

What if I need to correct errors in a published obituary?

If you discover errors in a published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. They may be able to make changes online or issue a correction notice in print.
