Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also give friends and family an opportunity to pay their respects and offer condolences.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-300 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check the submission guidelines for the specific publication or platform you're using. You may need to provide the obituary text, photo(s), and payment information (if applicable). Some funeral homes also offer assistance with submitting obituaries.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features like photos or online links. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told accurately.

What if I don't want to include certain information in the obituary?

You have control over what information is included in the obituary. If there are sensitive or private details you'd rather not share, simply omit them or discuss with your funeral home or obituary writer.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch and help capture the essence of the deceased person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed biographical information and often includes funeral service details.
