Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise yet meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private publications.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses where you can submit the obituary, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they are remembered and ensure their legacy is preserved. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and creativity.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Funeral homes may also offer obituary writing and publishing services as part of their overall packages.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow for corrections or updates to be made after initial publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while newspapers may take several days or even weeks to print.

Can I request corrections to an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They will typically work with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's passing publicly, you can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary. This might be shared only with close family and friends, or published in a private online memorial.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to obtain necessary permissions or credits if using copyrighted material.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and other resources.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you're looking to share an old obituary online, check with the original publication for permission first. You may need to obtain copyright clearance or provide proper attribution.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to emotional distress or lack of information, consider seeking help from a professional writer or counselor. They can provide guidance and support during this challenging time.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate your loved one's personality and spirit. Just be sure to balance humor with respect and dignity.

How do I handle condolences and messages after publishing an obituary?

You can include information in the obituary about where condolences can be sent or how people can reach out to offer support. You may also want to set up a memorial page or online guestbook for people to leave messages.

What if I need help planning a funeral or memorial service?

Contact a funeral home or event planner for guidance on planning a funeral or memorial service. They can help you navigate logistics and create a meaningful tribute to your loved one.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life?
