Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to express their condolences.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable work.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or online obituary platforms may also offer assistance in writing the obituary. In some instances, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to craft the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, depending on the publication's guidelines and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website, email, or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to follow their specific guidelines and deadlines for submission.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features like photos or online links. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private or restricted-access online obituary. This way, only those with permission can view the tribute.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to the obituary and reflect the personality or interests of the deceased.

How do I notify friends and family about the passing?
