Patrick Cooke Maddox - August 14, 1966 - March 02, 2022

Departed: 03/02/2022 (Fishersville)
Obituary Preview: Patrick Cooke Maddox August 14, 1966 – March 2, 2022
Patrick Cooke Maddox lived a great big life but still left us entirely too soon. Pat passed away on Wednesday, March 2nd surrounded by loving family after a valiant fight against colon cancer.  While Pat was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, he grew up mostly in Roanoke, Virginia. His parents, Jim and Clara, raised Pat with 3 older siblings:  Suzie White (Rex; daughter Janssen), Jim (Marylyn; daughters Meredith, MacKenzie) and Bob Taylor (Laura; children Ashley, Zachary, Cassie). Growing up, Pat and his family loved their time in a country farmhouse with acreage in Thaxton, exploring miles of woods and streams.  After returning to Roanoke, Pat made forever friends, drove fast cars, and had plenty of adventurous fun.
After high school, Pat enlisted in the Navy. His high marks earned him the choice of his first post; Pat chose Hawaii. He served with honor for 5 years before moving back east.  Pat was blessed by many amazing relationships from Cave Spring Jr and High School – Way too many to mention! You know who you are!! Patrick enjoyed many great adventures with Bob Enyart and Shannon Carr. Pat and Shannon were college roommates (Go Gators!) and eventually business partners, building their company SiteVision.
The summer of 1981 was the year it happened - Pat met Sara Clark. That bright spark of young love eventually developed into a deep, rich, and abiding love. Pat and Sara shared 27 years of amazing marriage, rivaled by few and a testament for us all. Their sons, Joshua Patrick and Ian Clark bring great joy and pride. Pat loved nothing better than nights on the porch with his boys, telling stories and solving all the mysteries of life.
Pat loved Jesus, his view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, time with his family and friends, volleyball, seadoo rides on Smith Mountain Lake, the beach – any beach, vodka-tonics, sunsets, motorcycles, his truck, but most of all his family. Sara was and is his best friend and the love of his life; his truest companion and fearless caregiver. The family was also blessed to receive brave and loving medical care from Dione Carr. Dione was an amazing caregiver to not just Pat, but also to Sara. The Legacy team, especially Diane, were a comfort throughout the home stretch.  Upon Pat’s wishes he will be laid to rest in Arlington.
Pat’s legacy lives on in so many of us, inspiring us to seize (seas) the day and live life to its fullest.

Allison Graves - March 05, 1960 - February 23, 2022

Departed: 02/23/2022 (Fishersville)
Obituary Preview: Allison Graves, the Staunton-area Pansy Picking Postal Princess, born on March 5, 1960, in Washington, D.C., passed away just shy of her 62nd birthday, on February 23, 2022, in Fishersville, Virginia. Allison grew up in Vienna and attended Madison High School (graduating 1978) before venturing off to Harrisonburg to attend James Madison University.   After two years she left to be a full-time postal employee.  Allison started delivering mail in Arlington, before moving to the Valley and delivering mail in Dayton and finally spending most of her time as the carrier in the City of Staunton, where she was friends with everyone.   She decided to slow down and became a clerk in Staunton before ending her postal career in Churchville.  In 1978, while a freshman at JMU, her lucky day was when she met a senior named Walter Wilson.  She just didn’t know how lucky.  It took her decades to agree to their first date, and eventually they were married in 2008.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard "Dick" Weikel Graves, and is survived by her loving husband, Walter A. Wilson, III, her mother Joey Osbourne Graves, her sisters Jeneen Graves Moore (Jim) of Centreville, and Susan Page Graves of Fishersville, and nieces and nephews Jordan Moore Lock (Stephen) of Richmond, Katelyn Moore of Staunton, and Colton Miller of Fishersville, and countless cousins (Graves family of Graves Mountain Lodge), and her favorite aunt, Betty Lynn Yowell.   Allison loved going to Graves Mountain Lodge where she always saw someone in her family.  Following in her mother and father’s footsteps, she started working at the music festival to help the Graves’ family in their annual event.  She loved walking in the local Rose River in front of the lodge, looking for unakite rock.  We almost never went to the Lodge without bringing back unakite, no matter the weather, and no matter if she really had the strength to walk on slippery rocks by herself, occasionally making Walter get out of the car to look by himself when she was too weak and could only direct from the car.
Allison had a passion for motorcycle riding and was a long-time member of the Motor Maids.  Unfortunately, after she was first diagnosed with leukemia, she was only able to ride her bike one more time.  This is probably the one thing she regretted the most with getting sick.
Allison was involved in a lot of things over her years.  She was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association, having increased her hive count to five.  She knew many of the members of the local car club, and eventually joined the Waynesboro-Staunton Region of the AACA.  Allison bought herself a ’46 Chevy pick-up and surprised Walter with a birthday present when he returned from a business trip, with a 1965 Chevy panel truck.
She was very proud of the fact that she was an original Hull’s Angel.  This group worked to save the Hull’s Drive-In in Lexington, becoming the first non-profit drive-in anywhere in the country.  Allison spent years on the board and only stepped down after travelling to the meetings from Richmond (where she lived with Walter while recuperating from one of her many leukemia diagnoses or operations due to her long list of side-effects to her illness) became too much.
Allison was currently battling leukemia for the fifth time (originally diagnosed in November of 2008), having beaten all the odds with earlier defeats of her cancer.   During her second battle she spent two months in the UVA ICU, part of this in a coma, before having life-saving surgery, when the doctors gave her little chance of surviving.  In September 2020 she was told to go home and enjoy her last two weeks.   She showed them, living another 18 months.
Allison enjoyed attending JMU football games with Walter.  She loved seeing everyone and conversing in the pre-game tailgate.  More interested in seeing that everyone had a good time than the outcome of the game.  Being with friends and family was more important to her than anything.
The family, especially Walter, appreciates all of your loving support over the years of Allison’s battles.   As she liked to call it, the “bumps in the road.”  She met each with a positive and never-give-up attitude.
Friends and family members are invited to the Celebration of Life service, officiated by Pastor Todd Brown (with assist from Pastor Steve Wolcott, Yeshua’s House of Prayer), on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 AM, at Bridge Christian Church, 1275 Goose Creek Road, Fishersville, VA 22939.  Visitation between 10 – 11:30, with Service at 11:30.  Family will be invited to stay for a private lunch.  Another Celebration of Life will be held at Graves Mountain Lodge sometime later this year, or actually anytime any of us go to the Lodge.
