Elaine Mary Edson Strunk - October 13, 1943 - March 31, 2024

Departed: 03/31/2024 (South Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Essex Junction
Elaine Mary Edson Strunk died peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, in the early morning hours on Sunday, March 31, 2024 at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, Vermont.
Elaine was born on October 13, 1943 in Springfield, VT, daughter of Harold “Whitey” and Violet Spaulding Edson. She grew up there and graduated from Springfield High School in 1961. She then went on to graduate from Champlain College in Burlington, VT in 1964 with a degree as a Medical Secretary. In 1967, Elaine married Robert Strunk and in 1970 they welcomed a daughter, Leah, into the world. And while the marriage didn’t last, Elaine proved to be the strongest, most self-sufficient and most loving mother a child could ask for, raising Leah almost single handedly.
Growing up in Springfield, Elaine enjoyed learning to sew, knit and crochet with her mother and her sister, visiting her extended family in Rutland, playing outside with her friends and playing sports with her brothers and her father. She especially enjoyed, and excelled at, archery. She told many stories of cross-country travels, a family of six packed into a station wagon with no AC or radio, the Army issued green, canvas tents that leaked if you touched them when it rained. Heavy air mattresses that had to be blown up by mouth and left black circles around your mouth. All of this endured to compete in Archery tournaments with her dad, the rest of the family in tow to cheer them on. And while, as a kid, Elaine may not have thought these trips were all that much “fun”, as an adult, she looked back on them fondly, knowing how important that family time together really was.
After graduating from Champlain College, Elaine worked briefly as a receptionist for a doctors office before being drawn back to Champlain in 1971. It was then that she began her 45 year career with the college. Elaine became a well known fixture with Champlain, earning several awards and much recognition for her work and service with the college. She loved her many roles, never shying away from taking on new challenges and adding to her ever-growing list of responsibilities. She loved working with the students in the Student Resource Center and remembered EVERYONE’S name. She loved meeting and talking with the parents when helping them navigate the Cash Card system. She was often referred to as the students’ “Mom away from home”. She was a devoted fan and member of the booster club for the Champlain Basketball team and never missed a game. Even traveled with them when they went to Nationals. She went on several trips abroad as a chaperone with the International Students and was instrumental in making sure they had everything they needed to be successful while in school here. And she was very proud that she helped “raise” 5 college presidents during her time with Champlain. Elaine just loved to be helpful. No matter who you were or what you needed, she wanted to do it for you. And if she couldn’t, she would find the person who could. All of this meant a lot to Elaine. But the one thing she was most proud of was her family. Raising her daughter as a single mother was surely challenging at times. But Elaine never wavered from her dedication to provide Leah with everything she needed, most of all – a loving home. Leah will honestly say that she never wanted for anything. And when Elaine became a grandmother, “Mims” took on that role with just as much love and commitment. She was always there for her grandchildren. The kids loved sleep-overs at Mims’ with blanket tents made around the pull-out couch. She never missed a game, a recital, a school play, a concert, or a graduation. She even let the family of five move in for a while, with 3 cats!!! And as a great-grandmother, Mims was as happy as ever. A few balls of yarn and two great grandchildren made for a fantastic day. And although Mims loved the title of “Great Grandma”, she usually upgraded it to “Awesome Grandma”!
Elaine retired from Champlain in 2014. Her family often encouraged her to travel and enjoy her free time by doing some exploring. And while she did travel a few times with her brother and sister, Elaine preferred to stay closer to home, taking several day and weekend road trips with Leah to attend various college games and events that the grandkids were involved with. Still always the biggest fan and cheerleader. And as these trips came to an end, Elaine’s favorite place was her home in Essex Jct. She loved to be there, in her yard and by the pool, with the family and her dog, Roscoe. She loved being active and walked Roscoe at least 2 or 3 times a day. And, thanks to Covid, many of her neighbors were home during the day as well. Mom looked forward to her walks to visit with neighbors that were also out, as they became friends now that they were all home. And some of these neighbors were as close as family, loved and cherished always.
Elaine enjoyed some time on the Essex Cemetery Committee, finding Veterans graves and making sure they all had flags on them. She didn’t want anyone forgotten.
Elaine is survived by her daughter, Leah Main and Leah’s partner, Jodi Doyle. She is also survived by her grandson, Colby Main and his partner, Ali Cyr; her granddaughter, Tatum Acker and her husband Wade Acker and their children, Henry and Kennedy; her grandson Cameron Main and his partner, Bri Belleville. Her sister, Joanne Woodward; her brother Erik Edson and his wife Judy, and her brother Keith Edson and his wife, Karen. Her sister-in-law, Lonnie Edson. Nieces Jill Woodward, Erica Borthwick and Marcy Brigham. And many other nieces and nephews and so many family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, hopefully this summer.

Raymond Bradley Jacoby - June 26, 1931 - December 21, 2023

Departed: 12/21/2023 (South Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Raymond (“Ray”) Bradley Jacoby of South Hero Vermont died at the McClure Miller Hospice Home in Colchester on Winter Solstice, December 21, 2023 with his three surviving children by his side.
Born in Finesville, New Jersey on June 26, 1931, the son of Raymond and Myrtle Jacoby, Ray grew up in Asbury Park NJ, where he became a diehard Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan, and in Worcester MA. Following his father, grandfather, and two brothers, Ray attended Lafayette College in Easton, PA graduating in 1957. During school summers Ray worked at YMCA Camp Blanchard where he learned skills that served him for the rest of his life - cooking, sailing, but especially gathering those around him in a common activity or cause. Ray brought camp counselor enthusiasm and a broad inclusive energy to everything he did; from teaching, directing non-profits, and fundraising, to being a dad, grandad, and friend.
Post college, Ray taught at the Abandon Institute of Technology (AIT) in Iran, during which time he married the love of his life, started a family, and coached AIT’s basketball team to a country championship. In Bridgeport, Connecticut he returned to the YMCA, in youth programming and directing YMCA Camp Hi-Rock, while earning his Master’s Degree. After teaching overseas again in Tripoli, Libya, Ray became the executive director of the Wilmington YMCA in Delaware. In 1974 Ray shifted directions becoming the Executive Director of the Chittenden County United Way in Burlington, Vermont where over the next 10 years he grew the organization’s capacity for funding local non-profits fourfold. He finished his United Way career in Atlantic City and in semi-retirement worked in the consulting sector advising successful capital campaigns for nonprofits across the country with the American City Bureau. This final job allowed him to summer in South Hero Vermont, where he and his wife Muriel bought a retirement home in 1997
Ray’s success in fundraising for nonprofits was grounded in a faith in humans’ capacity to care about one another and two mantras; ‘the volunteer is always right’ and, ‘if you don’t ask you are withholding someone’s opportunity to give’.
As a volunteer, Ray served on the Board of Local Motion, raised money for YMCA Camp Abnaki, was deeply involved in the International Rotary Club’s student exchange and goiter eradication projects, and served in lay leader positions in every church community he became a member of - most recently the South Hero United Church of Christ. He and his wife also served in the retired YMCA Executive’s volunteer program teaching English in China for two 6-month commitments and hosted an annual ‘cousin’s camp’ for their grandchildren.
In his family, Ray will be remembered for his relationship with his wife of 52 years, which was marked by deep love, mutual respect, and a degree of equality that was ahead of its time. He will also be remembered for his default of genuinely liking every person he met, groan-worthy puns, and a willingness to be goofy.
Ray is survived by his children and their spouses Peter and Tereza Jacoby, Laura Jacoby and Jack Brooks, and Lynne Jacoby; and his grandchildren Josh Smith, Zachery Bowen, Kayla, Connor, Alexia and Gabriella Jacoby and Cyrus and Ethan Brooks. Ray is predeceased by his wife Muriel Keller Jacoby, his son Henry Jacoby, his daughter-in-law Mary Doyle and his siblings Walter, Roger and Sarah Jacoby.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter Laura Cunningham Firkey, her husband Peter, and granddaughters Emily (husband Charlie) and Eva, all of Essex Junction, Vt.; step-children Catherine Kelly of Philadelphia, Pa., Michael Kelly of Bankok, Thailand, and John Kelly (wife Jennifer, children James and Charlotte) of Ft. Worth, Tx. He is also survived by his brothers John Cunningham (wife Dana) of Durango, Mexico, and Scot (wife Sheri) Cunningham of Osgood, In, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Elizabeth Cunningham, his brothers Fred and William Cunningham, and his sister Ann Maree Beaman.
Bruce served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as an engineer at IBM for 26 years. Following retirement, he operated a road-grading business and spent many years as a citizen advocate, traveling often to the state capitol to lobby legislators on issues including drug abuse, tobacco use, and property tax fines. He served several terms as president of the Vermont Lung Association and the Arthritis Foundation of New England and as a member of the school boards of the Champlain Valley Unified School District and Essex Junction High School.
He held a bachelor’s degree in physics from Florida State University and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Vermont.
A fitness enthusiast, Bruce completed more than 20 marathons, two ultra-marathons, and uncounted other races. He was an accomplished bicyclist and held two patents for his invention of the CycleCraft, a watercraft that was adjustable to fit any size bicycle and allowed bicyclists to ride, literally, on water.
He loved classic cars and was often seen in the 1952 Jaguar roadster he lovingly maintained, relying on a lifetime of mechanical expertise. Bruce loved the Vermont woods. He designed his and Donna’s home, with sustainable materials, woodstoves, and large windows that take advantage of passive solar energy. He managed their 20-acre woodlot, judiciously cutting down trees and chopping wood for fuel.
He sang in several choruses and played the tuba in the Hinesburg Community Band. He played the bagpipes at home, at car shows and festivals, and sometimes on lake ferries. A private, family memorial is planned.

Joan Lear Wulfson - June 14, 1931 - September 14, 2023

Departed: 09/14/2023 (South Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Joan Lear Wulfson passed peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family, on September 14, 2023. Joan was born to the late Edwin Lear and Frieda Reichel Lear on June 14th, 1931, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She graduated from Battin High School and went on to graduate from Trenton State Teachers College where she studied to become a physical education teacher. Joan was interested in athletics from a young age. She first played tennis in high school, as well as basketball and volleyball. In her Phys Ed teacher training, she would learn numerous other sports. Tennis would continue to play a prominent role in her life.
Joan taught Phys Ed at Westfield High School for three years and was working there when she met Jay Wulfson. In 1955 they were married in Elizabeth, NJ. While living in East Brunswick, NJ, they started a family, and soon had four children; David, Lisa, Todd, and Gary. In November 1963, they packed the family up for the big move to Burlington, Vermont, where she helped Jay start the Vermont Railway from the remnants of the Rutland Railroad.
There was a lot of work to be done, and Joan gracefully handled multitasking before it was a thing. She excelled at organization. As the kids grew older, she was able to apply those skills as a volunteer and board member for a number of organizations, including the Baird Children’s Center. After she and Jay divorced in 1974, Joan took on the role of office manager at Christ Church Presbyterian and didn’t relinquish it for 25 years.
In 1975, Joan met John Q. Caswell, and their mutual love of tennis became the backdrop for a loving partnership that lasted until his death in 1998. John’s sons Craig and Chris were devoted to her and continuously checked in on Joan and remained close for the next 25 years.
Over the years of living in and around Burlington, Joan made many special friendships. She devoted her energy and organizational talents to many causes. Her work organizing Vermont’s amateur tennis leagues may be what connected her most to the Vermont community. She was the USTA League Coordinator for Vermont for over 25 years. Her outstanding work in Vermont was recognized, and she was asked to join the board of USTA New England, where she served for many years. Joan’s dear friends and travel partners Mary Selby and Diane Meyer traveled with her to New York, France, England and Australia to attend each of the tennis grand slam tournaments.
After snowbirding in St. Petersburg, Florida, for many years starting in the 90s, Joan moved full-time to St. Pete. As would be expected, she spent time there as President of the Women’s Tennis Association of Isla Del Sol Yacht and Tennis Club.
In 2019, the draw of her grandchildren and children outweighed her distaste for cold weather, and she moved back north to Shelburne, Vermont. Her family was so happy to have her close by for her last years.
Joan is survived by her sister Carol Reed of Belvidere, NJ; sons David (Chrissy) of Shelburne, Todd of Burlington, and Gary (Danielle) of Bristol; grandchildren Christy, Jenna, Nicole, Christopher, Angela, Jessica, Alexandra, Samantha, Anna, Jacob, and Sierra; great-grandchildren Lily, Evelyn, Grayson, Sawyer and Steele; She was predeceased by her daughter Lisa. Joan had some special caregivers over the last few years, including Mary Joy "MJ" Patchett, whom she thought of as a dear friend, and her granddaughter Angela Navin who grew very close while helping during Joan’s final year in Florida.
