Corine S. Robinson Grooms - August 18, 1937 - May 11, 2021

Departed: 05/11/2021 (Passaic)
Obituary Preview: Corine (Solomon) Robinson Grooms was born in Eufaula, Alabama to the late Catherine Farmer-Glover (“Tap”) and Eugene Solomon on August 18, 1937 and departed this earthly life on Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
She attended Eufaula City Schools, and after graduating went to Montgomery, Alabama for nursing school but never pursued the career because she couldn’t tolerate the sight of blood. In 1963, she relocated to Passaic, New Jersey and settled there for the next 40 years until moving to Bergen County but never far from her family or her church.
Corine was a woman of faith, commitment, loyalty, and love, among a host of other admirable qualities. Her commitment and loyalty are exemplified in her nearly 30 years of employment at ADP and over 50 years of membership and service at Calvary Baptist Church of North Jersey at Garfield; she was actually at Calvary before Rev. Dr. Calvin McKinney became the pastor. During her time at Calvary, she served in several capacities: Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday School, Leader of the Seasoned Saints Ministry, and choir member. Like Jesus, she was committed to serving. Whether or not her knees or hands hurt, she’d be at home, in the kitchen cooking something to bring “to the church house” for various occasions. Most times, she cooked that famous cabbage that everybody wanted her to make. A few times, she yelled at her grandson as he peeked into the pot, “Get outta there! That’s not for you; it’s for my seniors in the senior ministry.” However, she always had another container of greens sitting somewhere close by for the family because she took good care of her church family and her biological family.
In all things, Corine honored and prioritized her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ first and her family at a close second. She was happiest when in the presence of her family, whether it was at a family reunion somewhere across the country, at the family barbecue in Garfield, at a Willis cookout/party in the backyard on Burgess Place, in the living room at Vernette’s house on Harrison Ave., at Jeanette’s house waiting for a fish or oxtail dinner, or in the comfort of her own home on a Sunday evening, watching tv with her husband Judge Grooms, spending time with her kids, or sitting on the phone with her cousin, Thelma. She even learned how to use the Duo video app on her phone so she could both hear and see her only son, Edward (widely known as “Country”) whenever she talked to him. As long as family was involved, she was excited, she was there, and she was cooking. Whatever food you needed, she made it and brought it: cornbread stuffing, turkey with gravy, cabbage, collard greens, sweet potato pie, pound cake, coconut pineapple cake, pineapple cake, caramel cake, peach cobbler, banana pudding, just to name a few. And she typically brought at least two or three foods with her.
Whether you knew her as Aunt Corine, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Solomon, Deacon Grooms, Ma, Momma, or Grandma, chances are you were touched by her love and generosity, for she truly demonstrated what it means to lead with love.

Kathleen V. Brown - February 28, 1931 - January 06, 2021

Departed: 01/06/2021 (Passaic)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen Viola Palmer was born on February 28, 1931 in Crofts Hill, Clarendon, Jamaica. She was the second of three children born to Maud and Joshua Palmer. After her fathers death in 1934, she went to live with an aunt. Subsequently, her mother remarried and she gained 4 siblings.
Kathleen attended Clarendon Primary School and was a very active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she thrilled the congregations with her soprano voice.
Kathleen was always ambitious so when her oldest brother, Ike, invited her to England in 1956, she gladly took the opportunity to migrate to the United Kingdom. It was there at age 25, she obtained a job as a bus conductress and she caught the eye of bus conductor, Heckford Brown. They got married after a short courtship and had two children, Derek and Sandra.
While raising their two children, Kathleen still had the desire to become more than a bus conductress and with the support of her husband, she attended Wordsley Hospital Nursing School in Wordsley, West Midlands, England in 1969.
After graduation, she worked at the same Wordsley Hospital where her patients loved her and her supervisors complimented her often for her work ethics. She was such a good nurse that in 1972 she earned the accolade of "Nurse of the Year."
In 1978, Heckford suggested that they should move to the USA since it was getting harder for minorities in England to excel. Heckford and Kathleen always wanted a better life for their children so Kathleen agreed and the family moved to Paterson, New Jersey. Heckford took a position as a security guard at St Joseph Hospital while Kathleen took a position as a Surgical Operating Room Technician at the same hospital. During this time, their son Derek went to college and daughter, Sandra, went to high school.
Kathleen had many joys in her 89 years of living, while just being a few weeks away from her 90th birthday on February 28th. She became a baptized member in the 1st SDA Church of Paterson. She saw both her children graduate from college and have successful careers. She attended her daughter, Sandras, wedding; granddaughter, Sherris, college graduation and wedding; granddaughter, Brittanys, college graduation and grandson, Brandons, high school graduation. She was hoping that she would be able to see Brittany graduate with her Masters and Brandon with his Bachelors degree in May 2021, even so she was so proud of them and their accomplishments.
Kathleen was also proud that throughout her years she still was able to read her bible or quarterly without the use of glasses. She would often proudly say, "I am so blessed being able to read my bible without glasses. God is so good."
At 89, her body started to fail her and she was diagnosed with 2nd stage renal failure, along with other medical challenges. After she grew weaker, her grandson, Brandon, created a playlist of her favorite hymns that played continuously for her. She was so excited to hear her favorites: "It Is Well With My Soul," "Ill Fly Away," "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "Hallelujah Medley" to name a few. On the day she passed, the 3rd song (Hallelujah Medley) out of the 11 recorded songs was playing. She died peacefully on January 6, 2021, at a coincidental time of 3:11 pm - the hour and minute representing the 3rd out of 11 recorded songs - surrounded by her loved ones.
As a member of the first SDA church of Paterson, Kathleen held many offices including sabbath school superintendent, stewardship leader, treasurer, flower club leader, sanctuary choir member, board member and vacation bible school volunteer.
She was a friend, second mother and confidant to many. Her concern and care for others were remarkable. It is indeed well with her soul and when the trumpet shall sound, we shall see Kathleen again, free from sickness.
Kathleens parents and five brothers predeceased her. She is survived by her sister Annette; children Derek and Sandra; son-in-law Dewitt; 4 grandchildren Sherri, Brittany, Brandon and Nicholas; 1 great grandson Sam; nieces and nephews; close friends Deloris Harris and Leon Desir; her church family; many relatives and countless friends.
