Obituary Preview: June Audrey Ramona Lyons Tamminen, Born May 24th, 1928, Joined her loved ones in Heaven on March 15th, 2024.
June was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Always the card shark, whether in NJ, VA or AZ, she always enjoyed a rousing game of Gin Rummy, taking great delight in always beating her grandchildren at the game. Ever the lover of flowers, she became an aficionado of the African Violet. She was always known to have the most beautiful, freshly picked flowers in Blacksburg from the Main Street town medians done under the cover of darkness (“I pay my taxes”). She was very supportive of her family in all their endeavors, encouraging them that the bad is better out than in. She was a fan of radio shows in her younger years, which gave her many wonderful hours of entertainment and fond memories of times with her loved ones. She was so loving with her grandchildren, her greats, and even her children (who at times) would earn one of her mastered looks of stern admonishment with a glint of mischief and sparkle of love, with a twinkle of unadmitted amusement in her eye (“Go to bed, you’re getting silly”). Always the “Jersey Shore Girl” she was a connoisseur of softshell crabs and clams. She was strong, determined, kind, compassionate, giving, loving, resourceful, grateful, and ever gracious. The sound of her laugh would warm our hearts and her soft looks of love and admiration will live with us forever.
June is preceded in death by her husband, John L.H. Tamminen, Jr., of Ocean Gate, NJ.; parents, Mabel Metzger-Lyons and Charles Lyons, of Toms River, NJ.; sister, Anna Lyons Wolverton (Vernon); sisters-in-law, Amy Tamminen-Hutchison (Bill), and Leola Tamminen-Sierra; nephews and nieces, Charles Ragazzo, George Wolverton, and Leslie Sierra-Casey.

Tamminen III (Kimberly), June Montgomery (Bill), and Bill Tamminen (DeeDee); grandchildren, William Charles Montgomery (Samantha), Katy Craver (Kale), Carrie Haney (Arlen), John Edward Tamminen (Amber), Adrianna Phillips (Ben), Meghan Ducharme-Barth (Nicholas), Tyler Bray (Lauren), and Joshua Tamminen; great-grandchildren Vanessa, Conner, Lillian, Cody, Elizabeth, Tristan, Camden, Zoey, Neil, William, Theo, Remy, and Baby T; nieces and nephews, Patty Ragazzo, MaryAnne Zuna, Harry Hutchinson, Jamy Haller, Cindy Kocon; great nieces and nephews, Laura Ragazzo, Annie Ragazzo, Ericka Eames, Earl Wolverton, Kari Martin, Everett Hubbard, and Keith Hubbard, and many more Kin.
We want to thank the incredible staff at Highland Ridge and her Home Health Nurse, Tammy D’Auria. June made many friends there among residents and staff. Thank you so very much for guiding and tending to her in her twilight years when her day to day became more than we could offer at home. We will forever be grateful for your time and care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to share stories and memories.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details, ideally between 100-300 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload one or multiple photos of the deceased to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember them.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, there may be costs involved in publishing an obituary in a newspaper or online platform. These fees vary depending on the publication and can range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars.

How do I find an old obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

What are some alternative ways to honor someone who has passed away?

Beyond traditional funerals and memorials, you might consider planting trees or gardens, creating art or music tributes, making charitable donations in their name, or establishing scholarships or awards in their honor.

How do I cope with grief after losing someone close?
