James Blanks Farley, Jr. - April 06, 1937 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Smyrna)
Obituary Preview: James Blanks Farley, Jr., born on 04/06/1937 passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, 04/27/2024. Jim was the firstborn of James Blanks Farley and Peggy Ragsdale Farley. He was born in Danville, Virginia, where he lived until he left to go to college. He attended Virginia Tech until joining the Air Force in January 1960 where he served until January 1964. He spent most of his enlistment at Robbins Air Force Base in Warner Robbins, Georgia, where he met and married Linda on January 26, 1963. After leaving the military, he and Linda moved to Marietta, Georgia. They eventually built a house in Smyrna in 1968 and raised their children there, making it their home for life.
Jim worked at Western Electric for many years and stayed with AT&T after their merger. He retired from AT&T in the mid-1990s. In addition to working there, he had a part-time job with the City of Smyrna Civil Defense from 1970 until 1987, where he was the Civil Defense Director and managed EMS rescue/ambulance for Smyrna.
Jim’s hobbies included photography, HAM radio, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and he and Linda also began to do square dancing and round dancing. He very much enjoyed reading and learning new things, talking to people and learning about their lives and experiences. He loved Big Band music and enjoyed good storytelling, reading the newspaper, and of course, breakfast! His “do-it-yourself” can-do attitude has been passed on to his children (and grandchildren). He was very community service minded, and always willing to help those who needed it. His strong commitment to service, and his helpfulness and generosity made an impact on those around him and will be remembered.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda; his daughter Susan Mazzoni (Dahlonega), son Ken Farley (Acworth), grandchildren Emily Mazzoni, Chris Mazzoni, Garrett Mazzoni, Gabe Mazzoni, Scotty Farley, and Zach Farley, and great grandchildren Evie and Everett Atkins, sister Priscilla Murphy of Virginia, and brother T.K. Farley of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, James Blanks Farley, mother, Peggy Ragsdale Farley, and his granddaughter Haley Elizabeth Farley.
We are devastated that we were unable to say goodbye but are so happy that he did not suffer.

Peter Caulk - October 18, 1955 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Smyrna)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Peter Martin Caulk
With solemn yet thankful hearts, we say goodbye to Peter Caulk, an extraordinary individual whose essence brightened the lives of those around him. Born on October 18, 1955, he passed away on April 25, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and achievement.
Pete graduated magna cum laude from the United States Naval Academy, played four years of varsity football and won the Operations Research Society of America award as the Outstanding Graduate in Operations Research across all military academies.
Pete spent over 30 years in the skies with civilian and military aviation, including 18 years in the Navy as a fleet F-14 and instructor pilot. He was selected to be an instructor at the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and was the top ranked department head while heading the Tactics Development and Evaluation Department. While at TOPGUN, he was a MIG pilot in the Paramount movie – you know, the guy who gets the bird.
He has some pretty impressive stats from his time flying, but he was most proud of the friends he made throughout his career, who became family. Everyone agreed “Horse” was the best of the best, but he would be the last person to say that.
A passionate hunter and kayaker, Pete revelled in the beauty of nature and never sat still. He took this energy to the medical profession later in his career starting with 9Gs and Life Wings and then continuing his work as a consultant helping to bring the “debrief mentality” to solve problems in medicine. And he did – decreasing medical accidents by 600% at one hospital.
Pete maintained a strong sense of service through his constant mentoring of children within the community in every place he would call home. He was a father figure to too many people to count and helped many kids earn scholarships and get into academies and universities.
But what he was really best at was being a husband, father and grandfather. Pete cherished nothing more than his role as a devoted husband to Peg, his beloved wife of nearly five decades. Their love story is greater than any ever written and together they built a legacy of love and devotion.
Pete's greatest source of pride and joy was his cherished family—his children, Ryan and his wife Amy, Erin and her husband Chris, and Kelly and her husband Andrew, and his eight adoring grandchildren, Leann, Liam, Luke, Nico, Finn, Asher, Ella and Beau, who affectionately call him "Pop." Everyone will continue to “Be a tiger and excel” in his memory.
He also leaves behind his siblings, Bob, Cathy and Kelly, as well as his in-laws and their children, who adored their fun Uncle Pete. He is greeted in heaven by his parents, Betty and Bob, in-laws Carol and Ray Alcorn and his brother-in-law Don King.
As we bid farewell to Pete, we carry with us the memories of his laughter, his warmth, and his unconditional love. Though he may have taken his final flight, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He lived a lot in the years he got, and made a difference wherever he went.

Joel Chasteen - May 30, 1946 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Smyrna)
Obituary Preview: CHASTEEN, Frederick Joel (Joel). Joel Chasteen passed away on April 17, 2024 after waging a long-term battle against Multiple Myeloma and heart disease. Joel was born and raised in Griffin, Georgia where both his father and mother worked in a textile mill. Joel graduated with honors from Griffin High School in 1964 where he was co-captain of the basketball team and a member of the Beta and Key clubs.
Joel was predeceased in death by his parents, Melvin Chasteen and Sara Waits Chasteen, and his brother, Danny Chasteen. He is survived by his loving spouse (Sallie H. Chasteen) of 46 years, two sons, Michael and his wife Anna, Stephen and his wife Sally, and five grandchildren who are the joy of his life: Mark, Colin, Emma, Harper, and Lucy.
After graduating from Griffin High School, Joel enrolled at Georgia Tech and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles in June,1968. While at Georgia Tech, Joel joined Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and served as a representative in student government. Joel was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation as a ROTC graduate. He later achieved the rank of Captain and served in El Paso Texas, Germany, and Vietnam. After being discharged from the Army in 1972, Joel was admitted into graduate school at Georgia Tech and received his Master of Science degree in Industrial Management from the Management College in 1973.
After receiving his master’s degree, Joel joined C&S Bank which later became NationsBank and Bank of America. Joel worked at the Bank for 25 years and became president and senior operating officer of several non-bank subsidiaries including commercial finance and consumer finance businesses. Included among these were C&S Equipment Financing and Leasing, C&S Family Credit, NationsCredit Consumer Finance, and NationsCredit Commercial Corporation. After leaving the Bank, Joel founded Empire Capital, LLC, which focused on capital raising and M&A advisory services for small and mid-market companies. After winding down Empire Capital, Joel joined non-profit Global Health Action as CFO and senior administrative officer for five years where he was able to refinance the company’s debt, upgrade IT systems, and simplify the multi-currency accounting systems.
Joel was a lifelong student and loved to read, particularly the morning newspapers from the New York Times and the Wall St. Journal. At the age of 59, he again entered graduate school at GA Tech and received his M.S. in International Affairs after a two-year program. He found inspiration and motivation from the interactions with his classmates as well as his professors; all of whom were younger than him.
Joel was an active member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church and served as a member of the Board of Trustees and as Chairman and member of the Finance Committee.
Working at C&S Bank created a double benefit for Joel. In addition to providing a platform for a rewarding career, Joel met and later married the “Love of his Life”, Sallie. Sallie was his best friend and confidant as they enjoyed the adventures of life together raising their two sons. Joel enjoyed traveling with Sallie, spending time together in the mountains, and dragging her to Georgia Tech basketball games. Together they had a wonderful family life as the sons grew up, married, and had children of their own.
Becoming a grandparent was a highlight of Joel’s life. He became “PopPop” to Mark, Colin, Emma, Harper, and Lucy and loved every minute he was around them as did the grandchildren. He especially loved to watch them participate in their sports activities, and he enjoyed shooting baskets, playing ping-pong, and throwing the ball around with them. Spending time with his family brought him ultimate joy, and Joel’s positive spirit and loving nature will be truly missed by his friends and family. In his free time, Joel loved playing golf with his sons and his buddies at Big Canoe. He was a longtime Georgia Tech basketball season ticket holder and diehard Yellow Jacket!
