Jr., Wilburn, and William. His father was in construction and the family moved many times around the state of Georgia. He met his first wife, Peggy Goldman, at Lincoln County High School in Lincolnton, Georgia. Charles joined the Navy July 5, 1953 and served in the Philippines during the Korean War as a Seabee, running large equipment and constructing landing strips for military aircraft. He has told us many stories about his days there. While in the Philippines, he asked his sweetheart, Peggy, to marry him via a letter that he sent along with an engagement ring! She accepted and they were married April 21, 1956. Two sons followed – Kenneth Dwayne Norton in June, 1957 (Charles was honorably discharged from the Navy soon after, on July 3, 1957) and Kirk David Norton in September 1959. Peggy died on February 1, 1960 of a brief illness at 24 years of age. Charles worked in construction after leaving the Navy for C.W. Matthews from 1957-1969 as a heavy equipment operator and site foreman. Charles’ in-laws, Lee and Ethel Goldman, helped care for his two sons after Peggy passed. Charles married Annette Brannon of Thomson, Georgia on September 1, 1962, He has spoken of her as his angel, how much he loved her and marveled at the grace of God at her taking on the responsibility of two small boys at her young age. He always included the comment that she was faithful in bringing them up in church, even when his job took him on the road. In 1963, the family moved to Smyrna, Georgia and they welcomed their daughter, Melissa, in 1966. Charles worked in the trucking industry for many years: Sears Roebuck (1969-1970), Frito-Lay (1970-1973), then retired from McLean Trucking after working as a road driver (1973-1986). He and Annette were founding members of Westside Baptist Church in Mableton, Georgia many years ago. Their three children married and began families. After Charles retired, they built a lovely home on acreage in Ranger, Georgia in the North Georgia mountains, where they attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Jasper. They lived there for 18 years then moved to Marietta. Annette passed on July 12, 2020 and he moved in with
Melissa and her husband (Jeff Grable) and she has lovingly cared for him as his health declined. Charles’ life was marked with steadfast, hard work, high moral standards, faithfulness to his wife and family and a strong constitution. He professed his faith in God at a young age, but had a revival of heart in his middle years and was rebaptized at Westside Baptist Church in Mableton, Georgia. He was very proud of his wife and family, served for many years at Shiloh Baptist Church in Jasper, helping maintain the building and grounds, and driving the bus for the “old folks.” He loved to dance and “cut a rug” at any wedding or party and enjoyed the simple life of the mountains in his later years. He was strong, constant, hard-working and faithful. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15

Myrna Jean Briscoe Cosby - September 03, 1940 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Marietta)
Obituary Preview: Beloved mother, grandma, and aunt, Myrna "Jean" Briscoe Cosby died of natural causes on March 30, 2024 at her home of 39 years in Marietta, Georgia. Jean was 83.
Born in 1940 to Victor Ezekiel "Zeke" and Bobbie Marion Briscoe (Lott) in Decatur, Alabama, Jean grew up throughout the American Southeast: Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. In school, she was a basketball guard and majorette and played the clarinet. Jean studied art at the Atlanta College of Art and English at Georgia State but left school to work at Ford Motor Company in Atlanta as a key punch operator.
In 1964, Jean married Charles "Charlie" Edward Cosby, an industrial engineer, businessman, and former Navy seaman from Blakely, Georgia. She helped pay his way through Oglethorpe business school. They soon built their first house on 10 acres in the Douglas County woods. Together they raised three boys and cared for Charlie's live-in mother, Mavis, while relocating from Georgia to Illinois, Kentucky, and California. Jean worked as a wife, mother, homemaker, caregiver, and briefly at a local bank when money was tight. She and most of her family ultimately returned home to Marietta, not far from the Haralson County farmstead of her parents, brother Jack, and Jack's family.
A devout Christian and unflagging supporter of school fund drives and Girl Scout Cookies, Jean was a caring and generous soul, treasured by her family, friends, neighbors, and animals. A patron saint of strays and rescues, she never hesitated to provide comfort, often sharing her lovely home with friends and family in need. Whether to help them get a start in life or work through tough personal or financial difficulties, she never turned her back on anyone and was trusting to a fault. She cared for her father, mother, husband, and mother-in-law when they became terminally ill. Widowed at 50, Jean persevered, herself surviving a fight against breast cancer at 60.
Jean enjoyed poring over coupon books, magazines, and shows about homemaking, interior design, remodeling, and country living. Although she lived most of her adult life in the suburbs, she remained a country gal at heart. When she could, "Granna Jean" visited her sons and grandchildren in California and Washington state. "Aunt Jean" visited with her kin in the smaller rural towns nearby as often as possible. She loved her brother's wife Emily like a sister and her nieces and nephews like her own children and grandchildren.
Jean cherished old movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Gone With The Wind", while eating Mayfield Chocolate Frozen Yogurt. She knew the lyrics to countless songs, adored Elvis and Hank Williams, and had an angelic voice. Like the birds she so loved to watch from her kitchen windows or nearby Lake Acworth, she often spontaneously broke into song. She was a people person, unabashedly striking up conversations with perfect strangers and watching people as much as her birds. She will be intensely missed.
Jean is preceded in death by her father Zeke, husband Charlie, mother Bobbie, live-in mother-in-law Mavis, brother Jack, and sister-in-law Emily. She is survived by her sons Victor, Andy (Corey), and Mark; her grandchildren Charlie, Kenzie, Harper, and Ryan; her nieces Dawn, Robin, Julie, and nephew John and their children; and her beloved terrier, Bonnie.
The family will greet friends from 12 until 2 pm Tuesday, April 9, 2024.  Funeral service will be held at 2pm at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, Georgia  immediately followed by a burial service at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park and then a wake for family and friends from 3:30-8:30pm at the West Hampton clubhouse.

Martha Hawkins Day - September 10, 1927 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Marietta)
Obituary Preview: To those who knew her, Martha Day was a sweet Southern lady with a big personality packaged in her petite, stylish self. Family was at the center of her existence, whether she was making a large family meal from scratch, attending a niece’s student teaching debut, or serving as the room mother for all of her children’s elementary school years.
Martha Leslie Hawkins was born to Carroll and Betty Worley Hawkins in Canton, Georgia on September 10, 1927. Martha grew up in the heart of Canton on Main Street, living across from the library, where she was a frequent visitor. A loving big sister to her brother Sonny and sister Janice, Martha was voted Sweetest in her senior class. A majorette in both college and high school, she also served as a Guest Majorette for Georgia Tech football games, and participated in a downtown Atlanta parade in the 1940s featuring Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. A true steel magnolia, she worked after high school graduation and paid her way through North Georgia College. Along the way, she caught the eye of another Main Street resident and fellow bandmember, a boy 2 years her senior, Lewis Day. After attending Duke University and enlisting in World War II, Lewis ended up at North Georgia College where he completed his degree, and a romance commenced. The pair married at the bride’s home church of First Baptist Canton on September 10, 1949 on her 22nd birthday.
After college, Martha taught school in Woodstock and Ball Ground. The young couple lived in Marietta, Columbus and Augusta as Lewis worked in management for Western Auto. Identical twin girls were born to the couple in 1953 and a son was born in 1963. In 1955, the Days moved to Smyrna Georgia where Lewis became the second State Farm agent in Cobb County, and he began building his business from the ground up, with his wife working at his side during the early years. In terms of her own career, Mrs. Day became a gift shop owner after her children were in college. As they neared retirement, the Days moved to Marietta, with Mrs. Day moving to Acworth after his passing.
The Days were active in the community, and took on leadership roles in their church, civic groups, and the local PTA. Martha served as President of the Junior Women’s Club. The couple travelled frequently, and in her lifetime, Martha visited over 50 countries and all 50 states, spurred on by a love of travel as a child. After Mr. Day’s death, Martha travelled, shopped and lunched with friends and relatives frequently. She was an active participant in her Marietta book club, of which she was the oldest member, and enjoyed her membership in the Marietta Christian Women’s Club.
Mrs. Day is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, her mother, father and brother. She is survived by a large and loving family, including daughters Debbie Day of Marietta, Dianne Day Lanier (Dave) of St. Simons Island, and son Michael Lewis Day of Kennesaw. She was the proud grandmother of Robert Lewis Day (Jessie) of Milwaukie, Oregon and Kelly Elizabeth “Kiwi” Lanier of Birmingham, Alabama. She was delighted to welcome her first great grandchild last year, Emory August “Gus” Day of Milwaukie, Oregon. She is also survived by her loving sister and frequent travel companion, Janice VanMeter of Columbus, her devoted sister-in-law, Betty Hawkins of Alpharetta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. “Aunt Martha” was a favorite of many relatives, and she cherished her relationships with them, as well as her relationships with a strong circle of friends that she collected over the years.
Her family would like to express their deep gratitude to her physicians and caregivers including the late Dr. John Leonardy, Dr. Mary Dailey-Smith, Dr. Peter d’Aubermont, Daniel Roberson, P.A., Dr. Dinesh Bhatia, Dr. Vineet Dua, Dr. Amy Kim, Shirlene Davis Little, Sandra Wiggins, and Elizabeth Yarde who shepherded her through a courageous 30-year battle with skin cancer. Appreciation is also given to the wonderful staff of Tranquility Hospice in Marietta, where Mrs. Day passed away on March 26, 2024 after a brief illness.
