Johnnie "Lightning" Dunda - Unknown - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Dunmore)
Obituary Preview: Johnnie “Lightning” Dunda recently passed away in Hawaii, his adopted home.  Born and raised in Dunmore, more specifically Sherwood Park and Sporthill, John was a graduate of Dunmore High School.  He was a bit of a wanderer and was always somewhat of a rolling stone.  He originally worked in real estate and construction, then was also a gold miner, geologist, musician, astronomer, movie producer, as well as a few other things.  He loved nature, looking at the stars, relishing at the sight of a rainbow and taking photos of his favorite trees.  He especially loved playing his magic mandolin. Most of all, he was a loyal and devoted son, brother, and friend.  What you worked at or how you made your money was never all that important to Johnnie, just that you were a good person, a true friend, and worked hard at whatever made your heart happy.  As he was fond of saying, this ain’t no practice run!
John was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Dunda, and most recently his beloved mother, Millie Dunda.  He was also preceded in death by way too many good people and good names to mention.  He is survived by his many siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.  There is no need to name them all here, you know who you are.  So maybe, as Johnnie would have wanted, just give them a smile or a wave or a hug or a helping hand during this difficult time.  As John was also fond of saying, Goodness never loses, and we all hope that he is right about that.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  There are no public calling hours.  Memorial donations can be made to Sherwood Park, PO Box 205, Dunmore, PA 18512, or again, just do something nice for someone without expecting something in return since that is the way that Johnnie would have wanted it.  Finally, as was his customary greeting upon meeting an old friend or a new friend, Aloha and Mahalo!  Those words mean several things, including hello and goodbye and thank you.  Johnnie would have liked to say all of those things to those who meant so much to him in life, both here at home and those that he met in all of his travels.

Departed: 03/20/2022 (Dunmore)
Obituary Preview: Jeanette Marie Bruce Quigley of Dunmore passed away unexpectedly at University of Pennsylvania Hospital on March 20, 2022. Her husband, Kenneth Quigley Sr., preceded her in death in November. Born Aug. 25, 1949, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Jeanette was the daughter of the late George and AnnaMarie Bruce. She graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in 1967. She attended Altoona School of Commerce to be a medical secretary. Jeanette then met her husband Ken, with whom she raised their six children. Jeanette spent the early years of her marriage raising her children. She was a central figure in their lives, and she selflessly sacrificed so many of her own wants and needs for her family. After her children attended school, Jeanette fulfilled a lifelong dream when she and her dear friend, Marybeth Letwinsky opened the Canterbury Shop. Accomplished seamstresses, they filled the store with custom quilts, curtains and pillows. Gifting her family and friends with her beautiful creations made Jeanette’s heart happy. Jeanette spent her later years working as a medical secretary for various organizations throughout the area. Jeanette’s love for her children and her grandchildren was unparalleled. “Nana” loved everyone, and everyone loved her. Her fun-loving personality was contagious. Her quick-witted sense of humor was sure to give everyone a laugh. Jeanette was also a pillar of strength and support for her family. She was the glue holding her ever-growing family together. Jeanette instilled so much love and wisdom in the hearts and minds of her children and grandchildren, and she made an indelible impression on her family. She has gifted her grandchildren with a legacy of love. Jeanette loved to spend time watching a variety of tv mystery series with her sons. She was especially fond of Murder, She Wrote as well as Agatha Christie movies. She loved to unravel a mystery! The depth of her knowledge and her ability to win any trivia game never ceased to amaze her family and friends. She also enjoyed her yearly trips to New York City with her daughter, granddaughters and friends of the family. Seeing the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was an annual tradition! To say that such a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend will be missed is an immense understatement. Despite recent complications, it would be wrong to say that Jeanette lost a battle because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. She radiated positivity and stayed strong, even in the face of a rare brain tumor for the last 11 years. Because of her example, her family and friends will all know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like. There was no quit in Jeanette. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight. Surviving are her six children, Kenny Jr., Dunmore; Shannon and her husband, Thomas Sheets, Dunmore; Matthew, Dunmore; Ryan, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Brendan and his wife, Karen, Honesdale; and Stephen and his wife, Michelle, State College; grandchildren, Molly and Maura Sheets, Garret and Mason Quigley, and Christos and Nikos Exarchos; brother, Gregory Bruce and his wife, Patricia, North Wales; sister, Audrey Liscomb, Ebensburg; sister, Marian Bruce, Hollywood, Fla.; brother, Ronald Bruce and wife, Chris, Orwigsburg; and brother-in-law, Francis Mikula, Ebensburg. Departed: 03/16/2022 (Dunmore)
Obituary Preview: Bertha Tomasofsky, 96, formerly of Dunmore, went home to the Lord on March 16, 2022.  She was a resident of the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania for the past 10 years where she received excellent and loving care.  After almost 40 years, she is united again with her husband, Eugene J. Tomasofsky, Dunmore, Pa. who passed in 1983. Born in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Carmella LoVallo Rinaldi. She attended Dunmore public schools and was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. She had previously been employed at Rinaldi’s Grocery, Walnut Street, Dunmore as a checkout clerk; Sauquoit Fibers Industry in Scranton as a machine operator; and, at Riccardo’s Family Market, as a deli specialist. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend who enjoyed cooking for family gatherings. She came from a large Italian American family that prided themselves on the quality of their homemade sausage.  (She made the best and was proud to say so.) She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, loved her, and enjoyed her cooking. Also surviving are two sons, Michael Tomasofsky and his wife, Susan, of McKinney, Texas and Paul Tomasofsky and his wife, Kathryn, of Montvale, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Glacken, West Milford, N.J., and husband Jerome; two grandchildren, Christian, Somerville, Mass. and Nicole, Montvale, N.J. and numerous nieces and nephews.  She cherished her grandchildren above all others, and they will always remember her making them her famous root beer floats.  Her grandson learned well how to make her sauce and meatballs and her granddaughter learned equally well how to make her pineapple turnovers and rice pudding. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Summa, Nellie Palko, Elizabeth Marino, and Nettie Staffaroni; and six brothers, William, Donato, Leonard, James, Salvatore and Angelo Rinaldi.  She was the last of the 11 to pass and one can only imagine the grand party they are now having at the Lord’s table. A very special thank you to all the Jewish Home staff for all the love over the years and to Compassionate Care Hospice and especially Lisa Sinclair for their care these past few months.  There is a special place reserved in heaven for all of them.
The funeral will be Tuesday, March 22, 2022 from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Taylor, PA.
