Obituary Preview: Edward L. “Ed” DePaoli, 86, of North Apollo, passed away peacefully on March 25th, 2024, in AHN Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. In true form to his resilient character, Ed fought a brief illness with everything he had right up until the very end, all while telling jokes and sharing stories with his family and the dedicated caregivers in the PCU Unit at Forbes, all of whom remained by his side in his final weeks.
Born October 2nd, 1937, in Leechburg, he was the eldest son of the late Greno J. and Irene E. (Kiro) DePaoli. Ed was also preceded in death by his brother, Arthur J. DePaoli, with whom he shared a special bond.
Ed was a graduate of Leechburg High School class of 1955. After high school, Ed went on to proudly serve our country in the United States Army. Upon his return home from his military service, Ed thoroughly enjoyed every day of his 36-year career at Westinghouse Electric Company as a Spectroscopist in the Chemistry Department before his retirement in 2003.
Ed was an intelligent man who celebrated his love for life with a good drink, a great meal, many fabulous vacations with friends and family, or just simply taking a drive with his wife by his side. He was an exceptional storyteller, and he remembered every detail of everything he experienced in his long life. Ed loved to share stories of his many great life experiences. Ed had a passion for cars, Pittsburgh Sports Teams and just relaxing at his home in which he shared by his surviving wife, Sandra L. (Miller) DePaoli. The last 10 years were spent by Ed as the primary caregiver for his wife Sandy, who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Ed is also survived by his three children, David E. (Tammi DeOrio) DePaoli of Pittsburgh, Joel R. DePaoli of Pittsburgh, and Regina (Bill) Seidel of Lower Burrell. Ed was most proud of his three surviving grandchildren, Abigail G. Seidel, Bella M. Seidel, and Camden W. Seidel all of Lower Burrell. Ed is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members with whom he shared many great times throughout the years. Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Thursday, March 28, 2024, in the Joseph J. Cardaro Funeral Home, 1125 Kenneth Avenue, New Kensington, 724-337-3325. Obituary Preview: Phyllis (Josie) Kurpakus Boney, age 91, of West Deer, passed away March 13, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 18, 1932, in Natrona, to the late Wesley and Eleanor Vorp Thompson.
Josie graduated from Ken High in 1950. She worked at Eat’n Park in New Kensington as a waitress, waitress supervisor, and finished her time there as a baker.
Josie was fond of holiday celebrations with her family, whom she loved dearly. She loved baking cookies for Christmas and family weddings, and everyone enjoyed her cookies.
An avid reader, Josie enjoyed doing crossword and word search books. Josie loved the Pittsburgh Pirates from an early age, often telling stories of her and a friend paying a quarter to ride the bus to Pittsburgh for the games. She continued to watch the games throughout her life. Josie also enjoyed RVing with her second husband and friends.
Josie’s family has many wonderful memories of spending time together at the family camp in Cooperstown, PA. She took great pride in her gardens and enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables at camp.
We will all miss her funny, amazing sense of humor.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Philip Kurpakus Sr. and Clifford Boney; son, Philip Kurpakus Jr.; son-in-law, Rick Spice; and seven siblings.
Josie is survived by her children, Patricia (Bob) Kirkwood of Lower Burrell, Constance (John) Erbe, of Phoenixville, Debby Spice, of New Kensington, Pamela (Richard) Armbrust of Apollo, Paul (Bonnie) Kurpakus, of Shaler, Alan Kurpakus of Cooperstown, and Joy Pacella of West Deer, with whom she resided; daughter-in-law, Amy Kurpakus; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Darrell William “Chet” Hastie Sr., 71, of New Kensington, passed away March 11th, 2024, with his family by his side. He was born August 23, 1953. Darrell was a graduate of Valley High School, where he was a member of the track team. His passion was playing the drums. Darrell was in several bands in his younger days and got back together in 2007 with band members to form Senior Moments. He worked in the Tunnelton Coalmine and went on to become a bulk operator at Glenshaw Glass, where he retired. Darrell was the son of the late Benny Thornton and Marion Craig, and was raised by his grandparents, the late Sonny and Ann Hastie. He was proceeded in death by his siblings, Charles Johnson, Carlius Johnson, Diane Thornton, Dora Stevenson, and Benny Thornton. Darrell was the father to Timika Hastie, Frederick (Akiko) Clay, Darrell (Katie) Hastie Jr, Taiesha Hastie, Moriah (Charles) McMunn, Nico Hastie and Nia Hastie; brother to Regena Johnson and Alfred Dorsey; grandfather to 20 grandchildren; and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Elizabeth I. (Dick) McCune 100, formerly of New Kensington died Friday, February 23, 2024, at Platinum Ridge Center in Brackenridge. She was born on March 1, 1923, in Clymer, PA, to the late Homer and Grace Dick. Elizabeth worked in the office of a Westinghouse War Plant in Philadelphia during WWII and the office of a coal mine in Clymer until she married in 1948. She then moved to Vandergrift to raise a family. She was an active member of the Franklin Avenue Church of God, where she was the pianist and also a teacher until 2003 when she moved to New Kensington to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Larry) Simback; two sons, Daniel (Nancee) McCune, of Mt Lebanon and Samuel (Patricia) McCune, of Anderson, Ind; son-in-law, Michael (Michelle) Herold, of North Huntington; her sister, Janet Fisher, of Indianapolis, Ind; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Frank; her daughter, Joyce Herold; three sisters and a brother.

She worked as a medical receptionist at the VA Hospital, Russellton Miners Clinics, AVH, and a variety of doctors’ offices over the years. Sherry even managed the old Speedy-Mart in Lower Burrell. She often enjoyed a variety of crafts, long drives, watching and driving fast cars, playing the piano, games on her phone, watching the Steelers, and socializing as much as she could. Hoping to help others, even with her passing, Sherry was also an organ donor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Edna (Cappo) Redding; and her siblings, Dave, James, and Edna. Sherry is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joseph A Weaver Jr.; sons, Eric (Tracy) and Adam; and her grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha, and Autumn. Sherry is also survived by her sister, Charlene (Dale) Marks. She will be missed dearly by her dog, Karma. Sherry requested a celebration of life be held in her honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. Born September 20, 1946, in New Kensington, he was the son of the late Peter and Pearl (Przemieniecki) Florek. Dave was a US Army Veteran, and he was based at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, while serving in the Vietnam Era. He was a car enthusiast, who enjoyed working in his garage as an auto body mechanic. Dave took pleasure in long drives in his Corvette with his dearly loved wife. He retired from the City of Lower Burrell as Supervisor of Parks and Recreation. Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially trips to camp and Linn Run with family and friends. He loved his oldies, but goodies, particularly Elvis Presley music. Dave was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, New Kensington, the VFW Post 92 and American Legion Post 868, both in Lower Burrell, and The Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 533, New Kensington. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia (Pawloski) Florek; a sister, Rebecca Key; brother, Dennis Florek; daughter, Lisa Smith; two sons, David Florek Jr. and Daniel (Jamie) Florek; 8 grandchildren, Dale, Kaitlin, Samantha, Brenden, Paul, Tabatha, Nicholas, and McKenna; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Robert J. “Bob” “Bud” Sprumont, 54, of Allegheny Township, passed away, Saturday, January 27, 2024, in his home, after a short fight with GBM brain tumor. He was born November 15, 1969, to Connie (Bentlejewski) and the late Robert E. Sprumont of New Kensington. Bob was a 1988 graduate of Valley High School and a 1992 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, with a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology. He earned his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Main Campus in 2002. Bob started his career at Powerex, Youngwood and from 1996 to present, worked at Seimens (Robicon), Upper Burrell, “close to home and parking is still free”. In 1996, he married the love of his life and best friend, Jenel, and together they had a wonderful, blessed life with their son, Daniel. Family was Bob’s number one priority; he was always there when anyone needed him. Bob, alongside his dad, was a 36-year volunteer fireman with New Kensington VFD Engine #3. Over the years, he held many positions with the Fire Department, and before his back injury, was an interior firefighter. Bob also held positions on the Board of the New Kensington Ambulance. He was a member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, New Kensington. Bob was a jack of all trades, but two of his passions were woodworking, a trade he learned from his grandpap, John Bentlejewski, and fishing, especially for steelhead both in PA and NY. He was a member of the Yellow Creek Trout Club and enjoyed many days fishing with his son, Daniel, and friends. In 2017, Bob and Jenel realized their dream of purchasing a cottage in New York along Lake Erie so Bob could fish steelhead and Jenel could walk the beach. This was only after they spent many wonderful years camping with the best “camping crew ever”. They got to enjoy six wonderful years experiencing so many wonderful memories with family and friends at the cottage; it was truly their happy place. Bob is survived by his wife of 28 years (together 35 years), Jenel (Hooks); his best buddy, son, Daniel; his devoted mother, Connie; mother-in-law, Clarice (late Emerson) Hooks; sister and brother-in-law, Weslyn and Tuigg Mcmullin; his uncle, Glenn (Marion) Sprumont, of VA; his aunt, Phyllis (late Barry) Brickel, of Irwin; and numerous cousins. He is also survived by many friends, who became family and are truly angels in disguise. And last, but most certainly not least, his devoted dog, Hershey. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert E., in December 2021; maternal grandparents, John & Nellie Bentlejewski; paternal grandparents, Armond & Mary Sprumont; father-in-law, Emerson Hooks; and aunts, Mary Lou (late Joe) Redmond and Arlene (late Al) Riddick; and his dog, Abby, who was his side kick for 13 years. Jenel, Daniel and Connie would like to thank Monarch Hospice, especially Lisa and Chrissy, for the excellent care Bob received, and our family and friends who were just amazing and so supportive. Obituary Preview: Tonya Renee Stevenson,63, of New Kensington, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024. She was referred to as Madre by her children, and was born September 28, 1960, in Pittsburgh, to the late Leonard and Rosetta LaRose Stevenson. She attended Carrick High School, in Pittsburgh and received her GED. Prior to her illness, Tonya worked at Goodwill Industries, Cheswick, PA. In addition, she worked at The Wendy’s Company and Unifirst. Tonya was a diligent worker no matter where she was employed. Tonya was a pillar in her community of New Kensington. She was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for her dedicated service going above and beyond in her Valley Royal Court Community. She was well liked and known in the community. While residing in New Kensington, she loved spending time with her friends and their families, attending church services, community events, cookouts and children’s baseball games. She had a presence in every room she entered with her beautiful contagious smile. Music moved her soul. Madre’s sweet spirit followed her wherever she went. She lived her salvation until the day she was led into the Kingdom of everlasting life. Tonya will forever be remembered for her strength, pride, fierce faith in God and never faltering to put her family and other families first.
Tonya also enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and having fun with them, spending time with her children and planning family cookouts. She was an avid Steeler fan. Tonya spent her final year celebrating her birthday at a hotel with her children and grandchildren and traveled to Chicago with her brother Marvin to meet her twin great nieces.
Tonya was a devoted mother to Natasha Stevenson, Takema Harris, Richard Harris, Ebony Stevenson and Derrick Bullock; a beloved grandmother to Imoni, Kejuan, Lela, Amir, DaiMon, DaiShaun, Eniyah and preceded in death by grandson Jakeem. She is survived by her brothers Kevin Stevenson and Marvin Crawley, sister Tomika Crawley-Cohen and preceded in death by her brother Leonard. She was an aunt, friend, and confidant to a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all the lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on January 20, 2024, in the Joseph J. Cardaro Funeral Home, 1125 Kenneth Ave., New Kensington, 724-337-3325, with Reverend Darryl Johnson, Pastor of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be private.
