Betty Harrington - July 20, 1929 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Ashland)
Obituary Preview: Betty Adkins Harrington passed away on April 27, 2024, at Community Hospice with her family by her side. She was 94.
Born July 20th, 1929, in Ashland, Kentucky, Betty was the daughter of the late Autie and Mayme Thompson Adkins. Her husband of 61 years, Robert Joseph Harrington preceded her in death in 2011. In addition, her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Don Adkins and Autie Adkins Jr.; a sister, Lorraine Adkins Slone and brother-in-law Lonnie Slone.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Jo Ellen Harrington Wilson (Mike); two grandchildren, Judge Lindsay Wilson-Cartwright and her husband Judge Alex Cartwright of Brighton, Michigan; Dr. Robert F. Wilson of Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York; a sister-in-law Juanita Adkins of Union, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.
Betty was a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ. She was a member of Grace Nazarene Church for over 60 years, having served in various capacities including teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and serving many years as Church Treasurer.
She served as a constant witness to the moments, both big and small, in her daughter’s and grandchildren’s lives, from church plays and ballgames to graduations and weddings. She was active in the PTA and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Betty was a graduate of Ashland High School in 1947 and Ashland Junior College in 1949. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a secretary in a local insurance agency and later in life worked as a bookkeeper at Slone Refrigeration.
Betty was especially close to her sister Lorraine. Along with their husbands, Betty and Lorraine wintered together several months every year for decades in Ft. Myers, Florida. All four were active at the First Nazarene Church of Ft. Myers.
Just hours before her sudden illness, she had her “hair done” and then dined at her favorite restaurant, Jim’s Spaghetti House, before enjoying an ice cream dessert at Austin’s.
Still active as of the fall of 2023, Betty traveled to New York City with her family, taking in the sights and a Broadway play. She was an avid University of Kentucky basketball and football fan and once caught a line-drive foul ball at a Cincinnati Red’s baseball game, a feat of which she was most proud. With her husband, she attended the Masters golf tournament in Augusta and for many years attended the Memorial golf tournament in Columbus. She enjoyed very much being mistaken for a woman younger than her age. Whether on a church mission trip or on her own personal vacation, Betty fortunate to travel to many states and countries, her favorite destination being Italy. On her 50th wedding anniversary she went to Hawaii walking to the top of Diamond Head and on her 90th birthday, she cruised to Bermuda “enjoying every minute of it.”
It was the night before leaving on the Bermuda cruise when Betty experienced a favorite, unexpected pleasure.
While standing in New York’s Times Square, a car crash suddenly knocked out most of the lights along the Great White Way.
Escaping the darkness, Betty and her family sought refuge in a crowded restaurant that still had its lights. While in the restaurant, Betty mentioned to one of the patrons, it was her 90th birthday.
That patron told the next patron and quickly this information moved through the crowd, resulting in a throng of over 200 New York City strangers giving Betty an impromptu, rousing rendition of Happy Birthday Betty! - with the singing ending. to thunderous applause. Betty loved it.
She lived a full, independent life and was able to do so because of a loving and devoted daughter who saw to it that all her needs were met, and that she got to do fun stuff too; from going on vacations to nightly “Blizzard” runs to DQ.
Thanks go out to the many people who visited and offered prayers and words of comfort, we are forever in your debt. Great kindness was extended to Betty by her friend Missy Roberts, and appreciation to our Bridges Christian Church family of Joy and Scott Conley, Kevin Fraley, and John McKinney.
A special thanks for the care and treatment provided to Betty by Kings Daughters Medical Center and to the kindest of folk at Community Hospice.
