James Peter Klumb - August 15, 1961 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - James Peter Klumb, 62, of Marquette, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024, at home in the presence of his loving family and under the care of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice after a brief battle with cancer.
Jim was born August 15, 1961, in Marquette, Michigan, a son of Ronald and Jean (Sleeman) Klumb and was a graduate of Marquette Senior High School.
Jim was a Jack of all trades. After a brief residence in Houston, he moved back to Marquette where he owned and operated Jim Dandy Caps. Throughout his working years, he found passion in many careers, including cooking at the Northwoods Supper Club. Still, his real passion was being a heavy equipment mechanic where he found employment over the years at Associated Contractors, Closer Construction, and Cleveland Cliffs where he retired after 15 years.
In his free time, Jim could be found in the garage, outdoors, working on family or friend's vehicles, or lending a friend a cold beer. He was a man full of integrity and empathy. He looked for the good in each person, and usually found it. He was a busy man - a man in constant motion - but never too busy to share his love of life with those around him. His devotion could be seen in the meals he cooked for his family or coworkers on holidays, or by his inability to relax until his wife and daughter had everything they needed. Jim took pride in everything he did, always going above and beyond to ensure that even the most mundane task was done to the best of his ability.
Jim is survived by his wife of 30 years, the love of his life, Tracy; two children, James D (Andrea) Klumb and Jordyn (Jonas Revord) Klumb; his father, Ron (Ardis) Klumb of Marquette and his mother, Jean (Robert) Papp of Virginia; grandchildren, Mattyx Nicely, Harlow and Lakelynn Klumb of Marquette; siblings, Pamela Nagelkirk of California, Vicki Nesbit of Marquette, Mary (Don) Hoeber of North Carolina, Cindy (John Aleandro) Klumb of Virginia, Dan (Tricia) Klumb of Marquette, and Nancy (Beth Dimun) Morgan of Virginia, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his in-laws, Ronald and Barbara Adams; sister-in-law, Lynn Adams; brothers, Michael Mineau, David Klumb, and Robert Papp.
He was a humble man with a heart full of generosity and will be remembered by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 from 2-6 pm at the Klumb residence. Condolences can be mailed to the Klumb residence at 2592 Moran St. Marquette, MI 49855. JEROME "JERRY" LeBOEUF - January 07, 1925 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Jerome (Jerry) LeBoeuf passed away at his winter home in Trilby, Florida, on April 11, 2024, at the age of 99. Jerry and his beloved wife, Julanne, enjoyed this cherished mobile home oasis where they spent happy hours with family and friends. Spring would bring the couple back to Upper Michigan and summers on Engman Lake where Jerry was constantly busy with various projects. He was truly a man who never slowed down. Even in his nineties, Jerry frequently drove throughout the U.P., taking Julanne to visit loved ones and escorting her to dinner. When she passed away in November 2021, he continued these seasonal rituals.
Born January 7, 1925, Jerry was a proud member of the ‘Greatest Generation’ who eagerly awaited high school graduation so he could defend the Allies during World War II. After receiving a diploma from Powers High School in 1943, Jerry immediately enlisted in the Armed Forces, beginning as part of the elite 10th Mountain Division where he trained in cold weather combat. Upon hearing pilots were needed, he volunteered for air training. Later he had individual orders to report to North Africa where he guarded German POWs and used his knowledge of nature to search for escaped Axis soldiers. Employing skills he acquired in Upper Michigan, Jerry impressed his commanders with his intricate ability to properly spread gravel with his dump truck for needed roads. This was a talent Jerry used throughout his life. It was also during this time that Jerry honed his natural propensity to rely on conversation to solve problems and to connect with others. It was a skill that would serve him well in the future.
While family and his love of outdoor work kept Jerry busy in what was never really retirement for him, he did enjoy prosperous occupations throughout his life. Returning to his beloved Upper Michigan he married Julanne in 1949. Jerry took a job with a building construction firm in Powers before accepting a position with the Seven-Up Bottling Company serving in different capacities with this establishment in both Menominee and Iron Mountain. In 1954, Jerry’s career took a turn when his military experience led to a position on the Iron Mountain Police Force. Later Jerry would aspire to combine his respect for law enforcement and his deeply held belief that discourse could diffuse tense situations by attending Northern Michigan College, studying social work and psychology. The move to Marquette brought new educational opportunities for the couple’s four sons. The family lived in married student housing where the boys learned the value of education, hard work, and respect for others. Jerry demonstrated his beliefs when he saved his mother-in-law’s house from a grease fire. Unfortunately, the injuries he sustained from this bravery hampered Jerry’s ability to take notes and to write his college papers. But he was not deterred. His drive led him to bid on and win U.S. Postal contracts for various mail routes, a business that is an important part of the family even now. Jerry also served with the Marquette City Police in the early 1960’s and later, NMU Campus Safety. Jerry’s vitality and determination is evident in the Florida mobile home park he built from the ground up over 40 years ago. Operating heavy machinery such as dump trucks, front end loaders, and back hoes meant that not only did the park became a reality but that family properties north of Ishpeming and on Engman Lake were constantly maintained by Jerry and those who were fortunate to learn from him. He loved building roads, laying culverts, and was the first to volunteer to help a neighbor repair their road. Just two years ago at age 97, Jerry’s sons were surprised to find that he had installed a culvert without their help. He delighted in astounding people with his ability and willingness to tackle any job. With his deep belief in sharing his knowledge, he patiently taught many young people these needed skills and his knowledge lives on in both family and friends. He was a teacher of practical skills!
Jerry was first and foremost a family man who modeled respect for others. He was the person who would just show up when he learned of a need. He arrived with insulation and paneling to be sure his son stayed warm in the cold U.P. winters. He saw that a neighbor’s roof needed repair or that a cabin at Bear Camp required plumbing work. A few months ago, Jerry rode in his golf cart to be sure his neighbors at the trailer park had reliable roads and pathways. Additionally, he loved nothing more than counseling new law enforcement candidates and took great delight in welcoming them to the family’s Bear Camp for training.
A lover of fishing and hunting, Jerry instilled a respect for nature in his family. His sons have fond memories of their father’s tenacious work ethic and his belief that one should treat people the way he or she wanted to be treated. His grandchildren and great grandchildren remember him as a devoted, caring man who deeply loved them.
A member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey and St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Dade City, Florida, Jerry was a man who lived his faith. He served as an altar boy in his youth and remained a devout Catholic throughout his 99 years of life. In his last week of life, he was concerned as he could no longer read his prayer book.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Helen (Ponegalek) LeBoeuf, wife Julanne, son Larry, along with brothers Donald and Bernard LeBoeuf. He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Liming Jing) of Dade City, Florida, Mark (Claudia Hart) of Ishpeming, and Michael (Jane Sleeter) of Dade City, Florida; grandchildren Kevin (Danielle) LeBoeuf, Jerry (Meghan Berka) LeBoeuf, Melissa (Randy) Lehtomaki, Laura LeBoeuf, Tia Fox, and Tony LeBoeuf, Eric (Tanya) Burkman, and Jackie (Jorie) Aulston; six great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a brother, Lionel; along with several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Joanna Taylor Spencer who was Jerry’s caregiver and who he considered his adopted granddaughter.
Jerry will make his final trip back to Upper Michigan where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife of 72 years in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th at St. Louis the King Catholic Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Timothy Ekaitis officiating. A luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately following the Mass.

RONALD C. KATERS - July 15, 1946 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Ronald Charles Katers, 77, of Marquette, passed away Monday March 4, 2024, after battling pneumonia and other illnesses.
Ron was known as a courageous and honest entrepreneur. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was the solid foundation of his family. He was the owner of Snyder Drug Stores, greenhouses, and other ventures around the Upper Peninsula. Ron has ensured that his 150-person company will transition to employees who will continue to serve the people of the UP.
He enjoyed serving others as a faithful Catholic on the finance boards of the Michigan Catholic Conference, Diocese of Marquette, St. Peter Cathedral, and Father Marquette Catholic Academy. He believed in “Service Above Self” as an active Rotarian and one of the founders of the Marquette Breakfast Rotary Club. He enjoyed meeting with his fellow Rotarians at 7 am meetings. Only Rotary could get him up that early. His family enjoyed hosting many Rotary Exchange students from all over the world, some of which became like family. He felt hosting students was an important part of his children’s education and learning to get along in the world.
Ron was a board member of Bell Hospital for many years and helped develop the new Ishpeming hospital. He was also on area bank boards and enjoyed listening to young entrepreneurs who came to him for advice. Many of the UP “old guard” did that for him. He was an avid Packer fan, owner, and season ticket holder for most of his life. He enjoyed passing on his love and Packer attendance to his grandchildren and rarely missed a game. If the Packers lost, he was grumpy for a week. He was also proud to have attended the Ice Bowl in 1967, which was one of the more memorable early dates he went on with Iris, his wife. No weather was too bad for a Packer game in the stands.
Ron was born July 15, 1946, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he attended St. Phillips and Notre Dame Academy Catholic Schools. He graduated with a BS in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After college, he changed gears to retail, where he was trained by the founders of Shopko, Inc. Ron opened and managed several Shopko stores, including the one in Marquette, before co-founding M.K. Stores, Inc., which operated Snyder Drugs in the Upper Peninsula.
The family was fortunate to travel to Europe many times, often to visit Rotary friends. In 2022, the whole family enjoyed the culture and food of Tuscany while meeting up with a former Rotarian exchange student, Zita Kelemen, and her family. He enjoyed Little League baseball with his son, music and Forensics with his daughter, supporting his wife’s many community projects, sunsets, swimming and floating on the boat at camp, picking blueberries, reading books, playing Playdoh and squirt guns with grandchildren, and building snowmen and forts - simple things. ROBERT FRANK LAWRENCE - September 01, 1927 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Robert (Bob) Frank Lawrence, 96, of 723 West Ridge Street, Marquette, MI entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, February 25, 2024 at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.
Bob was born September 1, 1927 in Marquette, the first of six children born to the late Frank and Jennie (Matson) Lawrence. He married Phyllis M. Swanson of Skandia in 1949. She preceded him in death in 1977. He was a lifelong resident of Marquette. He lived during the "Great Depression" of the 30's and World War II. He graduated from Graveraet High School in 1945. While in high school, he worked part-time for Pendill's Pharmacy and later as a bellhop and desk clerk for the Hotel Northland (now Landmark Inn).
In June 1945, at age 17, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had sea duty in the Pacific aboard the Flotilla Flag ship, USS LST 1018 and served as Yeoman. He attained the rank of Petty Officer 3/c. When he returned to the U.S. in 1946, he was honorably discharged from active duty when his ship was decommissioned. He continued in the Navy as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1951 when he was honorably discharged from the Reserve. He was awarded the American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, WW II Victory, and National Defense Service medals.
In the Fall of 2013, Bob made the Honor Flight to Washington, DC to visit the WW II monuments. Thanks to the Honor Flight Team, he considered it one of the most glorious events of his life. He was very proud to have served his country.
In the late 1940’s he sailed the Great Lakes as a deckhand on the William A. Reiss ore carrier, which he thought was a real fun job, and worked for his father, who was a painting and decorating contractor. He also was employed for short periods by the Marquette post office, a factory in Detroit, and a few other miscellaneous jobs.
He met Phyllis Swanson at a dance hall. It was the first and only time that either had been there. It was just meant to be. They were married in 1949 and had three wonderful children.
In 1950 he was employed by Lake Shore Engineering Company in Marquette and worked his way up the ladder. He started in the accounting department working with payroll, factory job costs and related work. He studied accounting through LaSalle Extension. He was active in Junior Achievement as business advisor. He felt very fortunate when he was asked to participate in the Lake Shore Executive Training Program which gave him valuable experience in other departments. He declined an advancement at the Iron Mountain home office, but in 1964, did accept a position at a new company branch in Negaunee as office manager, accountant and company representative for union relations.
In 1966 Bob joined Marquette City Hall staff when he was appointed City Accountant, the Finance and Accounting Department Head. He was a member of the Building Authority, Investment Advisory Board, Ex-officio member of associations. He installed the first Michigan Uniform Accounting System for the City in the late 1960’s. In 1974, in a one-time event during his tenure, he was ranked as top City Department Head by his peers. He worked with the Fire-Police Retirement Board from its inception to his retirement and was presented with a bronze plaque in appreciation for his many years of dedicated service. Over a period of many years of preparation, he and his staff laid the foundation and were primarily responsible for the City’s first GFOA Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting, which was awarded for the 1985-86 year. It is the highest form of recognition in the field of government accounting and was the first awarded to any governmental unit in the U.P. He retired July 1, 1986. He loved the City of Marquette and considered it an honor to serve its citizens and work at City Hall. He enjoyed working with his staff, the other departments, and the many outside business contacts.
Bob had many fond memories of the old Palestra Ice Arena. In 1954 the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings with the great Gordie Howe played the Marquette Sentinels there. Later that year he went to Detroit and saw the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in the final playoff game against Montreal and the found “Rocket” Richard. He was an avid hockey fan and supporter of local hockey. In the 1940’s he played on several local hockey teams when games were played in the Northern Michigan - Ontario League for the Marquette Sentinels and in the U.P. Amateur Hockey League for the Liberty Loans (U.P. Amateur Champions) and the Marquette Merchants. Bob said his first game as a rookie with the Sentinels was a memorable one. They traveled to Ann Arbor to play an exhibition game with the University of Michigan, who won the NCAA championship the following year. The Palestra did not have artificial ice at that time and was not cold enough yet to freeze inside. The team exercised on the bare concrete floor and some skated on a frozen over swimming pool at Presque Isle. He played on a forward line with another first year rookie, “Oakie” Brumm. The University of Michigan beat the Sentinels 9-6. “Boots” Kukuk scored three goals for the “hat trick.”
With some help, Bob built his own house in 1953-54, learning new skills along the way. He spent much of his leisure time fishing and boating at his camp on Lake Au Train. He enjoyed ice-skating and attending hockey games. He enjoyed watching most sports and old Turner Classic movies on TV. He played a small accordion and organ, mostly for his own amusement. He loved most all music, especially of the “Big Band” era of the 1940’s. Anytime he was in a big city where a big band was playing, he would make every effort to attend the performance. He saw many famous big bands of that era. The Green Bay Packers, Detroit Red Wings and Tigers were his favorite teams. He saw many great sports legends play. He enjoyed playing poker with family and friends. His happiest times were spent with his family of three children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Bob was a member of the St. Peter Cathedral Parish, a life member of the Bishop Baraga Association, a life member of the BPO Elks Lodge 405, a member of the NMU Blue Line Club, a former member of the NMU Wildcat Club, a former member of the Marquette Golf & Country Club, a member of the Marquette Regional History Center, a former business advisor for Junior Achievement, and a member of numerous boards, authorities, advisory groups, and committees while working at City Hall. He also did volunteer work for the Community Chest, Salvation Army and other charitable organizations in his younger years. He found pleasure in delivering Salvation Army food baskets to the needy, remembering many years before when he came from a needy family.
Bob is survived by two sons, William (Vicki) Lawrence of Marquette and David (Patricia) Lawrence of Glenview, IL; daughter, Diane (Jeffrey) Bell of Clarkston, MI; seven grandchildren, Andrew Lawrence of Marquette, Dr. Daniel (Kendra) Lawrence of Superior, WI, Sarah (Dale) Pittman of Clinton Twp, MI, Michael (Paola) Bell of Okemos, MI, Katherine (Andrew) Jackson of Mount Prospect, IL, Timothy Lawrence of Helena, MT, Sean Lawrence (fiance Shannon) of Minneapolis, MN; six great-grandchildren, Lily, Gage and Lucy Pittman of Clinton Twp, MI, Nova, Fox and Juniper Lawrence of Superior, WI; sister, Elaine (Walter) Reese of Littleton, CO; brother, Wesley (Christine) Lawrence of Portland, OR; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

DEVON J. DUSHANE - June 17, 1989 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Devon J Dushane, 34, of Negaunee, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
He was an avid fisherman in both summer and winter. No weather condition would stop him from fishing if he could get to the water. We know he is fishing his heart out up in Heaven, catching every species and size imaginable.
Over the years he worked to become the handyman that could do it all. No single trade was enough for him to focus on; he wanted to be a jack-of-all-trades. This carried well in his heart as he sought to help anyone in need. If he didn't know how to fix something, he'd learn. In 2023 he launched his handyman business, Handy Home Services, with aspirations to expand into a household name in the coming years.
Devon is survived by his wife, Katie Dushane; children Payton, Korbin, Zoey, and Oaklin; his mother Renee Dushane; his sister Nicole Dushane; his grandmother Marquita Wright; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A private service for family only will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 2nd.
Friends and acquaintances are invited to visit anytime between 2:30pm and 4:00pm on Saturday, March 2nd for a celebration of life at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette. As many know all too well, Devon was never one for formal attire nor being the center of attention, so we welcome friends to attend in casual attire in Devon’s honor.

JERRY R. PANGRAZZI - December 15, 1932 - February 14, 2024

Departed: 02/14/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Jerry R. Pangrazzi, aged 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care in Marquette, Michigan, under the care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. The son of Guido Guy and Violet Tiny Pangrazzi, Jerry was born in Lima, Ohio, and was known by many nicknames throughout his life – Stubby, Blackie, One Chance, and Little Bull – all of which elicit memories of Jerry.
In his early years, Jerry grew up in a mining family, attending and graduating from Stambaugh High School in Stambaugh, MI. Among other things, he was a member of the 1949 undefeated Stambaugh High School football team, on the 1950 South UP All-Star football team, and co-captained Northern Michigan University’s football team in 1953 (at the time, NMU was Northern Michigan College). During his time in college, Jerry was one of the original “Barracks Boys”, an athletic scholarship program from 1952-1956 that helped students become college graduates with professional occupations. His legacy in that program will live on through the historical marker placed on NMU’s campus.
Jerry graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan College and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, then began his teaching and coaching career that would span several decades. As athletic director at Marquette Senior High School, Jerry never met a stranger. He couldn’t go anywhere without running into a colleague, a student, an athlete, or a friend.
Jerry’s lasting mark has been left in many places – the Jerry R. Pangrazzi Athletic Equipment Storage Facility building on the Marquette Senior High School campus, induction into both the UP Sports Hall of Fame and the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame, and as the first honoree of the James Trethewey Award for Distinguished Service from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
As both a lifelong teacher and lover of the outdoors, Jerry often combined the two. He enjoyed cycling, hunting, ski jumping, and cross-country and downhill skiing, where he would regularly enjoy the company of family and friends. In late retirement, Jerry was a downhill ski instructor at Ski Brule in Iron River and kept that role until well after his 86th birthday.
Jerry will be remembered as a man with a sense of pride and humility, and with deep love for his family. Left to carry on this legacy are his wife, Bertha (Tervo-Werronen), his children, Teri (Bill) Reed, Tina Gehrke, Michelle (Pete) Redlon, Craig (Susan) Pascoe, Susan Buckmaster, Judy Soulliere, Brian (Sara) Pascoe, Greg Werronen, Geoff (Carol) Werronen, and Laura Kagy, grandchildren Erin (Adam) Goff, Tim (Jess) Reed, Patrick (Maria) Reed, Courtney (Craig) Smith, Joe (Ellina) Reed, Stephanie (Jake) Kropac, Jessica (Tyler) Smith, Josh Gehrke, Ryan Gehrke, Zachary (Kali) Redlon, Alex Redlon, Luke Redlon, Theo Redlon, Isaac Redlon, Sophia Redlon, Christine (Ike) Beltran, Anthony (Cessi) Pascoe, Whitney (Brad) Nurmela, Michael (Ashlee) Kind, Zachary (Victor Cardoso) Pascoe, Theresa Pascoe, Oliver Pascoe, Simon Pascoe, Hilary Werronen (Matt Duven), Maia (Kurt) Wright, Clinton Millman, and Jackson Kagy, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Jerry is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Williams (d. 11/19/1970), former wife, Elizabeth Niemela-Pascoe (d. 04/12/2014), and his brother Robert (Sally) Pangrazzi, sister Helen “Pina” (Lowell) Budzak, and parents.
Jerry’s family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care he received at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care, and Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. Throughout his time under their care, he was treated with love and respect.
A private graveside service will be held at a later time in Park Cemetery. A memorial celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Presque Isle Pavilion in Marquette.
Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, 914 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Jerry's memory.

Departed: 01/21/2024 (Marquette)

Joseph was born on May 14, 1953 to Hubert “Bud” and Doris (Boemmel) Koob. He grew up as the second oldest of four brothers in Morton Grove, Illinois. As a child, Joseph experienced and developed the love of the natural world as a scout and in family camping trips to the American west. In adolescence he considered going into the priesthood and attended St. Henry’s Preparatory Seminary before graduating from Niles North High School.
He continued his seminarian studies at Lewis College before moving on to Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, where he also worked as a community organizer. In his later twenties, Joseph took a formative trip to Europe, where he met his first wife, Greta. Though their marriage was brief, they settled in Denmark where he began work as a forester, a profession he identified with for the rest of his life. It was in Denmark in 1983 where he met his second wife, Janet (Jenny) Howard. Together they moved to Wisconsin where Joseph studied forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and had two daughters, Anna and Lisa. Joseph and Jenny divorced in 1987. In 1989, JoAnne, Joseph's third daughter, was born to him and Diane Martin. After living in Wisconsin for several decades, Joseph moved to the Upper Peninsula, a place he cherished for its natural beauty. His affection for this area began during childhood visits to his grandmother's family in Republic.
Joseph loved his many friends and family members. He was an eager conversationalist and a seeker of community, which he found through church and faith, poetry, forestry, activism, his men’s group, and various other learning and arts communities. Lawrence A. Morse - May 20, 1946 - January 21, 2024

Departed: 01/21/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: Marquette, MI – Larry Morse passed away in his home, surrounded by loving family on Sunday morning, January 21, 2024 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He is now at peace and welcomed into the arms of Our Loving Father with his beloved son, Marty.
Larry was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 20, 1946 to Abram Morse, Sr. and Leota (Provot) Morse. He spent much time in his youth with his grandfather Arthur Lawrence on and in Union Lake, where he learned the art and sport of fishing that he so loved throughout his life.
Larry built a life and career around his early passion for produce. Starting out as a bag boy and then becoming a produce manager while still in his teens, Larry eventually became a produce buyer, supervisor and director for the Flint-area food chain, Hamady Brothers. At one point, Larry was known in the Flint area as “the man who saved Hamady’s” by personally appealing to the better nature of the owner to keep the stores open. Larry ultimately built his own retail and wholesale produce distribution business in the Flint area, known as Topp’s. The business was a labor of love for Larry, and he was known and loved by many customers in the area.
Larry married his beloved wife Kathy on November 24, 1982, “the best thing that ever happened to me”. Together, they lived a wonderful life in Linden, Michigan and Marquette, Michigan, where they retired to in 2008. For 41 years of marriage, Larry and Kathy had a shared passion for running, cross-country skiing and healthy living. Larry’s gardens in Linden and Marquette were the stuff of legend, generating a harvest well beyond what they could consume on their own, so they shared with many friends and loved ones. Larry and Kathy were well-traveled, visiting Vancouver, Spain, Italy, Bosnia and South America.
Somehow, Larry also managed to find time to become a ultramarathoner, competing in a number of 100-mile, 24-hour and other feats of running endurance. Larry also competed in 53 traditional marathons and numerous other races, traveling to New York, Boston, New Orleans, Washington DC, Milwaukee and his favorite Detroit Free Press Marathon to compete. Even well into his 70’s, Larry frequently won first place in his age group as he competed. One of Larry’s proudest accomplishments was completing thirty-seven Crim 10-mile races in Flint, which he last did in 2022 at age 75. One of his favorite weekly traditions was his Wednesday morning “Muffin Run” in Marquette with beloved friends made in their shared passion for running.
.
Of course, no story about Larry would be complete without mentioning his love for fishing. Larry’s “happy place” was Rice Lake in Ontario, Canada, where he returned 49 times for a week annually with his family and friends. Larry also fished the waters in and around Marquette as well as Manitoba and Colorado.
Larry was a lover of life and impacted everyone he met with his infectious good spirit and positive attitude. “Who’s got it better than us?” was his motto! Larry loved to make people happy and was grateful for the full life he enjoyed.
Larry is survived by his wife, Kathy (Liikala) Morse; sons Chris (Vita) Morse, Keith Morse and Mark Morse; sister-in-law Norma (Fetterhoff) Morse; brothers-in-law Ron (Mary Ann) Liikala, Dale Liikala, Michael Liikala, and Brian (Tammy) Liikala; grandchildren Jonathan Morse, Kristina Morse, Brandon (Colleen) Morse, Brianna (Robert) Carpenter, Shanna Morse, Charlotte Morse and Nolan Morse; great-grandchild Robert Carpenter III; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Abram Morse, Sr. and Leota Morse; Brother Abram Morse, Jr.; Sisters Diane Davis and Betty Morse; and son, Martin Morse.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 am to noon on Friday, January 26, 2024 in the Bishop's Room at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the cathedral at 12 noon Friday with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Steber officiating.  Larry's Funeral will be livestreamed at : https://my.gather.app/remember/lawrence-morse-2024  A dinner will immediately follow in the parish hall. Cremation will take place shortly thereafter and Larry requested that his ashes be spread by family at his Rice Lake “happy place”.
The family would like to thank Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice for their wonderful care and service in Larry’s last days, and especially Jamie who was with the family during Larry’s final weekend. Memorials are preferred to Care Clinic, 1213 N. Third St., Marquette, MI 49855 or Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, 914 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 in Larry’s memory.
