Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for generations to come.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. However, it can also be written by a close friend or colleague who knew the person well.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their personality, accomplishments, and charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. However, some online obituary platforms allow for longer tributes or even multimedia content like photos and videos.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral arrangements. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Traditionally, obituaries were published in local newspapers. Today, they can be found online on websites like Legacy.com, ObitsArchive.com, or FuneralHome.com. Many funeral homes and crematories also publish obituaries on their own websites.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or online platform. Some newspapers charge by the line or word count, while others offer package deals. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options for publishing an obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! In fact, many people choose to write their own obituaries as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the purpose of an obituary photo?

An obituary photo serves as a visual representation of the person being honored. It can be a recent photo or one from earlier in life that captures their personality or spirit.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber affairs. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help celebrate the person's life and personality.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, once an obituary is published, changes cannot be made. However, some online platforms may allow for corrections or updates.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration that an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or publication. Some websites keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

If you're considering republishing an obituary from another source, ensure you have permission from the original author or publication to do so.

What is a memorial donation in lieu of flowers?

A memorial donation in lieu of flowers is a request that mourners make a charitable contribution in the deceased person's name instead of sending flowers. This can be specified in the obituary.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose ones that resonate with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I find old obituaries?

Can I create a digital scrapbook or memory book alongside an obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to create digital memory books or scrapbooks where friends and family can share stories, photos, and memories of the deceased.

Is it appropriate to mention cause of death in an obituary?

This decision ultimately depends on the family's preference. Some choose to include this information to raise awareness about a particular disease or condition, while others prefer not to disclose it.

Can I include information about pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Pets are often beloved members of our families. Including them in an obituary can provide comfort to those grieving and acknowledge their importance in the deceased person's life.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform immediately to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as soon as possible.

Can I write an anonymous condolence message on an online guestbook?

No! While it's understandable that you might want to remain anonymous, signing your name shows respect for the family and allows them to personally thank you for your condolences.

What is the etiquette for responding to condolences expressed through social media?

A simple thank you or acknowledgement is sufficient when responding to condolences expressed through social media. You may also choose to respond privately through direct message if desired.
