Birdia M. Jones - April 28, 1934 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Life Reflections
Birdia Mae Jones (nee Stewart) was born on April 28, 1934, in Sardis, Mississippi. Birdia was the second of nine children, and the eldest daughter, born to Lucious Sr. and Cora Lee Stewart (nee Smith). She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Lucious “Sam” Stewart, John Henry Stewart, and George “Ed” Stewart. Birdia accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at Walton Chapel CME Church at an early age and dedicated her life to serving others.
Birdia was educated at Walton Chapel High School, graduating valedictorian of her class, and where she truly loved returning for reunions to fellowship with schoolmates, family, and friends. While at high school, Birdia met and married the late Sam J. Jones in April 1953 and moved to Chicago, Illinois where they established their family and remained united for 61 years until he earned his heavenly wings in 2014.
Birdia was a loving, giving, free-spirit soul. She was a woman of care, determination, faith, grace, grit, and resilience. While she was employed for several years as a nurse aide at Cook County Hospital, it was upon leaving the workforce in the mid-1970s to become a full-time homemaker that she most cherished and leaned earnestly into living life with passion and purpose as stated in Romans 12: 11-12: Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. She held a motto of “hard work don’t hurt nobody” and was a self-taught woman with a healthy dose of tenacity that allowed her to master several talents with which she generously shared. She was a wonderful cook and baker, with caramel cake and homemade ice cream as her signature desserts; a passionate gardener and landscaper, planting flowers year-round throughout the neighborhood; a creative carpenter, wielding sledgehammers, power drills, and everything else doing demolition, renovation, additions and continual projects around the house; a diligent pianist, playing favorite hymns daily; a skilled seamstress, sewing entire outfits overnight; and a novice linguist, learning basic Spanish and American Sign Language in her sixties.
Birdia authentically embraced being adventurous at each stage of her life, from riding horses with her beloved Sam in her teens; to taking her children on special outings, like going into the woods, ax in hand and singing carols while chopping down a tree; and hiking a volcano and riding all the amusement park rides while traveling with her grandchildren. She was unapologetically a lifelong wanderlust of the outdoors, gleefully walking upwards of ten miles daily well into her late seventies.
Birdia loved caring for her family most of all and is survived by her three children, Arcynia Hayes (Jan), Darryl K. Jones (Natalie), and Sharon “Tracy” Grant (Larry); eight grandchildren: Danielle Hayes, Ian Hayes (Quiana), Rachel Reid (Renier), Candice Grant, Aaron Grant, Andrew Grant, Christina Jones, and Taylor Jones; four great-grandchildren: Lang Maith, Camden Hayes, Cayson Hayes, and Amory Grant; three sisters: Eva Johnson, Lue Ella Jackson, and Teresa “Doll” Fuller (Jackie); two brothers: Lewis Jeff “LJ” Stewart (Janice) and William “Hut” Stewart and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
