Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They can help notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by contacting their obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their submission process, including any specific requirements or deadlines.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options for basic listings, while others may charge several hundred dollars for longer or more elaborate tributes.

What if I need to cancel or remove an obituary?

If you need to cancel or remove an obituary due to incorrect information or other reasons, contact the publication or platform directly as soon as possible. They will guide you through their process for making changes or removing the listing.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

What if I'm not sure where to start when writing an obituary?

Is it okay to include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! For many people, pets are beloved family members. If they played a significant role in the deceased's life, consider including them in the obituary as a way to acknowledge their importance.
