Verl was a multi-faceted person. Above all, she was a devout Catholic and held a strong belief that it was her duty to serve others. Over the years her selflessness benefited many. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a past member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a faithful volunteer at St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center, logging 40,000 plus hours over 28 years, where she graciously performed any task assigned to her. Verl’s kind words and her warm and welcoming smile was always appreciated by the patients, visitors and staff. Volunteering was not new to Verl. She was an active member of the PTA at her children’s school, including serving as president. She also was a class room mother and chaperoned class field trips many, many times. Verl was an avid sports fan, partial to baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey. She was an active member of the Hammond High School Adult Booster Club during the years her children were in high school and beyond. Verl met her future husband while they were both active members of the local Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). There was never any doubt that Verl loved her family. It didn’t matter if it was advice, an encouraging word, a comforting hug, a pretty purse, a delicious dessert, or her just being present that was needed, she always had something to offer, which included life lessons. At a young age, Verl’s dad had impressed upon her the importance of not leaving a footprint. A lesson that she taught (and was learned) by one young grandson who had carelessly tossed a gum wrapper out of the car window. Immediately, the car was turned around to go back and retrieve and properly dispose of the wrapper. A good lesson to learn! This was just one of many lessons that Verl taught to her family. She was always up for an adventure. Although she was not a swimmer, Verl loved to be on the water and was fond of rowing a boat with her children while on family vacations. Needless to say, these outings would provide another opportunity to teach an important life lesson which is still remembered today, don’t stand up in a rowboat! Verl had a playful side and her love of music could bring out this side of her. She was fond of the 1940’s Big Band music. If this music was played on the radio, she was known to stop what she was doing, enlist a partner and dance!
Verl loved the USA and her patriotism was contagious! She held high respect for members of the active military, veterans, and especially for those who gave their life while defending her freedom. She valued her right to vote, loved a patriotic parade, and immensely enjoyed debating and discussing politics. Verl was a lifetime member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War Organization.
Verl was a voracious reader who enjoyed mystery stories and the daily newspapers. She also loved the challenge of working crossword puzzles. Verl was not a hiker. But she did enjoy walking, and for many years she preferred to walk to and from the places she needed or wanted to go. Verl was known to advocate for causes that were of importance to her and took pride in standing firmly in her beliefs. She will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.
