As we navigate through this difficult time, let us find comfort in the memories we shared, the joy he brought into our lives, and the lasting impact he had on each of us. Doug's spirit will forever guide us on our own journeys, inspiring us to live life to the fullest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by family members, close friends, or a funeral home. In some cases, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to craft the obituary. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to capture their personality, achievements, and spirit.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other special requests.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words, depending on the publication's guidelines and your personal preferences.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any accompanying photos or other materials.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and legacy, as well as a way to ensure that your story is told accurately and authentically.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms and funeral home websites that allow you to publish an obituary at no cost or for a low fee. These online tributes can be shared easily on social media and remain accessible for years to come.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary from same-day publication for online notices to several days or even weeks for print newspapers. Be sure to check with the publication for their specific deadlines and policies.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or updates can be made to an online obituary with ease. However, printed newspapers may have stricter policies regarding changes after publication.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance on what to include, consider consulting with a funeral home director, hospice worker, or professional writer who specializes in crafting meaningful tributes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to use discretion and avoid offending any family members or friends.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to exercise discretion when deciding what to include in the obituary. Consult with family members or close friends if you're unsure how much information to share.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or values.

What if I'm not comfortable writing about myself in an obituary?

If you're writing your own obituary in advance but struggle with self-promotion or modesty issues, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member who can provide valuable insights and perspectives.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a meaningful way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to specify the charity name and any relevant details.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

Most online platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link into emails or messaging apps.

Will my online obituary remain available forever?

Policies vary among online platforms, but many guarantee that their archives will remain accessible indefinitely. Be sure to check with the platform for their specific policies regarding archiving and access.
