Alfred J. Law - January 02, 1935 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Rhinebeck)
Obituary Preview: Alfred John, III. Alfred John Law, III, died on March 21 in Rhinebeck, NY, after a long scuffle. He was 89. The cause of death was pernicious perplexity, according to his Jungian analyst. Medical experts blame complications of Parkinson's Disease.A resident of the Hudson Valley since 2000, Law had a multifarious career. He regarded himself as the ultimate dilettante, dabbling in a variety of activities and interests without committing to any one. Pointed in his youth toward the Episcopal ministry by a religious family, Law used Princeton (BA 1957) as a stepping stone to careers in journalism and, later, the law.Law's interest in journalism was fueled by his membership in the University Press Club, an organization of Princeton "stringer correspondents" for major news organizations. His seven-minute world "scoop" for the Associated Press of Albert Einstein's death earned him lasting renown. Law worked full-time for the AP, then the Wall Street Journal, while earning a master's in history (Columbia 1963) and a J.D. (NYU 1967). Honoring academic seriousness, his Master's Essay focused on The Veterans of Future Wars, a 1935 Princeton student prank. Law spent 20 years with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, seeing it grow from 17 to 500+ lawyers. He worked closely with his mentor, Joseph H. Flom (who pioneered the firm's mergers and acquisitions practice), then later headed the firm's Washington office. Law particularly enjoyed the collegiality of the early days and became known for gentle pranks that humanized the otherwise staid environment. He retired from practice in 1988 intent on "finding the meaning of life," particularly through the teachings of Carl G. Jung.Law was an avid sailor, photographer, and lifelong lover of classical music. He served on the Boards of the Washington Opera, Waverly Consort, Washington Performing Arts Society, and Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, and was Board Chairman of New York's Musica Sacra. Watching his young daughters take an interest in a televised performance of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Law attributed their enthusiasm to the use of English translation "surtitles." He persuaded a skeptical Washington Opera management team to try them by personally underwriting a surtitled test performance. They have used surtitles ever since.Law grew up in Chattanooga, TN, the son of Alfred J. Law Jr. and Mary Turner Law. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Fowler Law; daughters, Eliza Garcia of San Antonio, TX; Anna (Alan) Rast of American Fork, UT; and Margaret (Ritu) Law of San Francisco, CA; and grandchildren Kirsten and Kevin Rast, and Albert and Katharine Garcia. He is also survived by siblings Christian H. Law of Black Mountain, NC, and Mary M. Law of Berkeley, CA. His first two marriages ended in divorce. He was predeceased by his first wife, Katharine S. Elaine J. Silvernail - November 08, 1941 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Rhinebeck)
Obituary Preview: On January 1, 2024 as the New Year began, Elaine J. Silvernail of Rhinebeck, New York, passed into Life Eternal with our Lord Jesus Christ. Elaine was born on November 8, 1941, Elaine Barbara Johannsen, in Lynbrook , NY , the daughter of Ludwig Maas and Catherine “Kitty” Zazworsky Johannsen. Following a number of years on their family’s 200+ acre farm in Acra, NY, she along with her sister Claire, were raised primarily on Long Island, in Lynbrook. Elaine’s priorities were always her family, her faith, and her church. She was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, and a teacher – something which embraced everything she was and everything she did in her life. Nothing less than excellent was acceptable. She was passionate about gardening and loved the arts – encouraging her children and grandchildren’s participation in music, dance, and visual art ; she knew how to organize and work hard. Giving up was never an option.Elaine earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Oneonta State University. It was there that she met her soon-to-be husband of 59 years, Neal Silvernail. They married the morning of Elaine’s college graduation, on June 9, 1963. As a young, newly married wife and mother, Elaine took a break from teaching and dedicated her life to being a mother, raising her two children, and running the household as a wife to her husband, Neal. Even though she hated cooking, meals were always prepared at home. Eating out was far too expensive and therefore not an option.Elaine was a dedicated and creative educator who began her teaching career in 1963, teaching one year in Saugerties and one year in Richfield Springs before she and her husband, Neal rejoiced with the birth of their first-born daughter, Cara in 1965 and again with their second-born daughter, Kristin, in 1969. She and Neal settled in the Rhinebeck area in 1965, for her husband Neal’s new position in the Rhinebeck Central School District. She resumed her teaching career in the Rhinebeck Central School District a number of years following the birth of their second daughter, Kristin and then in 1982 accepted a position in the Pine Plains Central School District, until her retirement in the early 2000s. Elaine’s faith was a cardinal aspect of her life. As a member of Third Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck, she served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for over 15 years. She shared the responsibilities as Couples’ Club director with her husband, Neal. She was the Chair of the Worship & Music Committee, and in charge of the Altar Guild and Fellowship Committees for many years. Elaine was always there for everyone in the family. She attended every dance, music, and gymnastic lesson for each of her children. It enabled her to be an incredible private coach at home during practice time, having received the detailed information shared during each lesson directly from the teacher. Even though she never learned to swim herself, she learned the proper form of each stroke from the coach and made sure that her girls were proficient swimmers! That same enthusiasm continued with her grandchildren as she attended every swim meet, every horse show, every basketball and baseball game, every concert, and every ceremony in which they participated. There was no part of her family’s life that she missed. She was always there to cheer them on, offer support, and advise how to do it even better the next time. Elaine impacted everyone she met and she will continue to live on in our hearts forever through the many priceless memories we have of her.Elaine is survived by her daughters Cara Silvernail-Thomson (Richard), Kristin O’Connor (Robert), as well as grandchildren Jordan S. Thomson Zietz (John), Dylan S. Thomson (Caroline “Killian” Carr), Aiden S. Thomson, Abigail and David O’Connor and Ilysa Genden (Tyler) and great-grandson, Theodore Thomson Zietz. Surviving also is sister Claire Gentile (John, deceased) of Eagle River, Alaska and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Elaine is predeceased by her husband, Neal B. Silvernail, who passed on to Life Eternal on July 10, 2022.Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00am at the Third Evangelical Lutheran Church at 31 Livingston Street in Rhinebeck, NY 12572. Muriel Karagianis - March 03, 1926 - December 02, 2023

Departed: 12/02/2023 (Rhinebeck)
Obituary Preview: Muriel was a force. She lived her life with an open mind, but a strong opinion. Although she experienced great hardship, Muriel met every challenge head on and always persevered. Her generosity towards family, friends, and even strangers always prevailed. This was ever apparent during her 30 year tenure as a volunteer at Northern Dutchess Hospital.Born on March 3rd, 1926 in Englewood, NJ and then residing in Bronx, NY, Muriel attended high school and later went on to work as a secretary at an ad agency on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. In 1948 she married her one and only, John Karagianis (d.1996), who had lived mere blocks from her prior to their meeting. John and Muriel soon started a family, including two sons; John Karagianis (d.2008) and Steven Karagianis (d.1976), along with their beloved dogs. Together, John and Muriel restored a beautiful home in Yonkers which they enjoyed with their extended family for many joyful years before retiring in Milan, NY.Throughout her life, Muriel was passionate about many things; the Yankees, Mahjong, gardening, Jeopardy, her Greek heritage, and most of all, her family. She has always been the heart and head of the family and acted as the record keeper. Muriel was a force. She lived her life with an open mind, but a strong opinion. Although she experienced great hardship, Muriel met every challenge head on and always persevered. Her generosity towards family, friends, and even strangers always prevailed. This was ever apparent during her 30 year tenure as a volunteer at Northern Dutchess Hospital.
Born on March 3rd, 1926 in Englewood, NJ and then residing in Bronx, NY, Muriel attended high school and later went on to work as a secretary at an ad agency on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. In 1948 she married her one and only, John Karagianis (d.1996), who had lived mere blocks from her prior to their meeting. John and Muriel soon started a family, including two sons; John Karagianis (d.2008) and Steven Karagianis (d.1976), along with their beloved dogs. Together, John and Muriel restored a beautiful home in Yonkers which they enjoyed with their extended family for many joyful years before retiring in Milan, NY.
Throughout her life, Muriel was passionate about many things; the Yankees, Mahjong, gardening, Jeopardy, her Greek heritage, and most of all, her family. She has always been the heart and head of the family and acted as the record keeper. She was the only one with deep knowledge of every branch of the large family tree. She spent her last days surrounded by her family, all of whom she repeatedly told to tidy up her room and go home – which really meant, “I love you.”
Muriel will forever hold a special place in so many hearts. Her memory will continue to bring everyone together, just as she did all her life, even in the end.
