Martin Thomas Higgins - April 13, 1933 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Red Hook)
Obituary Preview: Martin T. Higgins, 91, an active member of the Red Hook community for fifty-seven years, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024. His final days were spent happily living with his family in Needham, MA and bravely being supported by hospice care for advanced prostate cancer. Surrounded in love and comfort he left 268 Harris Ave ninety-one years and two days after he was brought into this world to be reunited in Heaven with the love of his life, his wife, Esther Higgins, and his son, Martin Higgins. Born on April 13, 1933, in Manhattan, NY to James and Mary (Leech) Higgins, Marty was proud of his immigrant parents who came to the United States from Mayo and Westmeath counties in Ireland. Marty always said the best decision he ever made was marrying Esther Kavanagh on September 7, 1957, at St. Bartholomew Church in Elmhurst, NY. Essie really made that decision (and most others for their next 56 years). What we know for sure is that Marty and Esther lived life demonstrating the type of union that most dream about. For that, we are all blessed. Marty enjoyed two careers and even more hobbies. He worked for many years as a programmer and educational trainer at IBM in Ulster and Dutchess counties. At an age when most retirees golf, Marty became a ski instructor and worked at the Adaptive Ski Center on Windham Mountain in Windham, NY. Marty’s man cave was the basement at 21 Aspinwall Road where you would find him making his own ties or picture frames; upholstering furniture or cutting and fitting stained glass; or building a model ship from the original blueprint. What we learned from Dad during his last two years was simple and profound - the most important aspects of life are people and relationships. We- his daughter Margaret Higgins and her husband Tony Christopher of Mountain View, CA; his son James Higgins of Albany, NY; and his daughter Kathleen Ward and her husband Mark Ward of Needham, MA - didn’t just survive our Father, we learned how to keep living from him. He was a loving Grandpa to Katherine, Grace and Gregory Ward and took great delight in spending time with them. Marty was blessed by his sister, Marion Higgins of Bayside, NY who supported him with faith and laughter. He is also survived by his niece, Lyn (Higgins) Tobin and her husband Joe Tobin of Greenwood Lake, NY; his sister-in-law Joan Kavanagh of Freeport, NY; and his nephew and nieces, Thomas, Patricia, and Donna Kavanagh. Along with Essie and Martin, Marty joined his parents; brother and sister-in-law, James and Marilyn Higgins; his nephew James Higgins; his cousin, the Rev. Donald Kavanagh, all in Heaven. Big Mart is also survived by countless friends that were his extended family. The family is grateful to the many medical professionals and caring community members in Massachusetts and New York who offered Marty expert, compassionate care with the type of mutual respect that can only be considered love. Among them are Dads in home caregivers; the Good Shepherd Community Care Hospice in Newton, MA; his friends and staff at the Scandinavian Living Center in Newton, MA; the clergy, deacons and lay ministers of Saint Joseph's Parish, Needham, MA and many medical professionals at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, NY and in Red Hook. For friends in the Boston area, a Celebration of Life Mass will be offered on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 5:00 pm at St. Joseph's Church, Needham, MA. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 am Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook, NY. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook. Memorial donations may be made in Marty’s memory to the Adaptive Sports Foundation to support their work ensuring individuals with differing abilities have access to skiing and sports. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY. For directions, or to sign the online guest book, please visit www.Burnett-White.com.

Richard G. Rothaupt - November 20, 1954 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Red Hook)
Obituary Preview: Richard G. Rothaupt, dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 15, 2024. His departure was a sudden and profound loss and is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others. Born on November 20, 1954, in Albany, NY, he was the beloved son of the late Robert and Jacquelyn Marshall Rothaupt. A 1973 Colonie Central High School graduate, “Rich” excelled in the trades. He began an accomplished career as a technician in various trades (appliances, trailers, and autobody) and ultimately became an engineering technician at IBM for many years before taking early retirement. A gifted athlete, he played volleyball in the US Volleyball Association and for a short time on the beaches of California before returning home. It was then he met Krystal, his forever love and wife of 44 years, literally on the volleyball court. Rich was the true definition of a “jack of all trades” and master of more. A hardworking man with a commitment to quality and a zest for learning new things, primarily self-taught, he could fix or build anything as long as he had the tools required. He had a passion for cars and an ongoing project building a 1940 Ford street rod and also helped his son build race cars. A devoted family man, he took his family on many adventures in their RV from the time his children were toddlers. Rich also loved the outdoors and was an avid snowmobiler and fisherman. Always willing to lend a hand, he coached many youth baseball and hockey teams and grew to love the game of hockey, which he also played. He was still skating and teaching the next generation of hockey players, his grandchildren, until his untimely death. Taken too soon, Rich is survived by his wife Krystal, his son Brad (Lauren) Rothaupt, his daughter Carley (Brandon) Sanders, his grandchildren Bryce, Quinn, and Reid, his mother-in-law Doris Lookabaugh, and his brother Ronald Rothaupt, along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A proud Papa, he was also excited for another grandson, expected in a few weeks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and David Rothaupt. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his honor to the sport that he loved at the USA Hockey Foundation, usahockeyfoundation.com, which promotes the growth of hockey in the United States, or to the charity of your choice. Services will be private. Arrangements are under the care of Burnett and White Funeral Homes, 7641 South Broadway, Red Hook, NY 12571.

Galina Malikin - December 26, 1944 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Red Hook)
Obituary Preview: Galina Malikin, aged 79, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024, at her home in Red Hook, NY. She was born on December 26, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Antsel and Tatiana Malikin. She was a graduate of Saint Petersburg State University. She is survived by her daughter Polina Malikin, son-in-law Paul Sturtz, granddaughter Iko Malikin and brother Ilya Malikin.Galina immigrated to the United States in 1980 and lived in New York City for many years before settling in Columbia, Missouri upon her retirement. When her first grandchild Leo was born, she became known to everyone as Gaga – a play on the word “baba” which means grandma in Russian.Even if you had only met Galina briefly, you would have felt her warm smile and caught her twinkling eyes. She was ever generous with her laughter, stories, and care. We would like to celebrate the person Galina was before the last few difficult years when dementia claimed more and more of her. She was many things, but she was first and foremost a loving caregiver. As a mother, she was dedicated to her daughter Polina’s growth and fiercely supported her dreams. As a daughter, she was devoted to her elderly parents and cared for them selflessly, making sure they could age with dignity and grace. Galina was also an adoring, patient grandmother, a loyal sister, and a devoted friend to so many. She was known to everyone as a kind, caring person who was always ready to help. Often friends and family would complain that she did not take enough care of herself, as is so often the case with selfless caregivers. She came from a long line of tenacious, strong people who did everything they could to help their families and communities survive.Galina was exceptionally full of life and joy, though her life was certainly not easy from the start. She was born in 1944, in what was then Leningrad, Russia, towards the end of WWII. Her father barely survived the 900-day siege where hundreds of thousands died from starvation, and her mother lost their first child when she was evacuated. Much of their immediate family was killed in the Holocaust. A year after Galina’s birth and against doctor’s recommendations, her parents had another child, Ilya. As different as they were, they were very close throughout their lives. They protected each other and shared a large, boisterous, talented circle of friends. And they continued to take care of each other in their new lives in the US. Galina was a brilliant, hardworking, and creative person. She had a PhD in chemistry and dedicated long hours to her research as well as to training and encouraging others. During her time at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, where she worked for 15 years, she taught many young lab technicians and supported recent immigrants who were making their way in the field. She believed in her work and saw science as a pathway to appreciating the beauty and wonder of life. She approached chemistry as a creative and joyful pursuit, even when things were difficult or mundane. In essence, this was one of her special gifts: the ability to always find something interesting, beautiful, humorous, or insightful in each person and situation, even in moments of difficulty and pain. Galina ooh’ed and ah’ed over every scribble created by her daughter and her grandchildren Leo and Iko, and she was forever encouraging of creative efforts. She was not as fortunate to have had such encouragement herself, but she never turned that into resentment. Instead she was a true aesthete and valued art of all kinds very deeply. She loved to recite poetry by heart, from Pushkin to Akhmatova to Mayakovsky to writing by her friends. She loved films and when she moved to Columbia became a devout True/False Film Fest attendee.Having grown up with only one dress as a child, she took pride in curating a stylish, well-made wardrobe filled with elegant cashmere sweaters and linen pants. Many commented on how stylish she was and how well she took care of each item, always expertly folded and lovingly packed. Ever true to her detail-oriented chemist’s mind, she could remove any stain, and friends would routinely bring her clothing to rescue. She noticed and appreciated the tiniest of details — like a small line of green on a ripe burgundy pear, the vivacity of a child’s painting, or a new bud on the crepe myrtle tree that she resuscitated in her backyard in Columbia. She was miraculous in finding beauty in unlikely objects and circumstances — it was part of her genius and an incredible survival mechanism.Galina loved to collect and tell stories. She always had an anecdote ready for each new occasion and a life lesson to share with each new acquaintance. She loved to give advice and be of service, and she counseled friends over the years, helping them with anything from green cards to parenting. As her cognitive decline became obvious, it was hard to tell when her dementia began and where her generous storytelling ended. In her years living in Upstate NY, her dementia and lack of English did not stop her from connecting to many neighbors, volunteers at the community center and public library, as well as her caregivers and hospice workers. Gaga will be buried in Columbia, next to Leo, her beloved grandson with whom she spent so many happy hours, reading books, going for walks, telling stories, eating dark chocolate, and watching vintage Disney cartoons. It feels right that these two remarkable, eccentric spirits should be together. Columbia became a surprising haven for Galina in her later years. She was surrounded by caring neighbors who became her friends, kin, and guardian angels. She loved her neighbors and was proud to have her own home, filled with a lifetime of mementos, Danish furniture, and curated children’s books. While dementia took almost every ability away from Galina in these last few months, she never lost her warm, kind spirit. This ultimately was her success, her wealth, her glamor, and fame. All her friends and family constantly complained about how ridiculously late she always was, famously arriving hours after the appointed time. She will be sorely missed, but she’ll be right on time for whatever lies ahead. Her family will do their best to carry on her loving spirit. There will be a graveside service on Monday, April 15th at 11am at the Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri.
Galina Malikin, aged 79, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024, at her home in Red Hook, NY. She was born on December 26, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Russia, to Antsel and Tatiana Malikin. She was a graduate of Saint Petersburg State University. She is survived by her daughter Polina Malikin, son-in-law Paul Sturtz, granddaughter Iko Malikin and brother Ilya Malikin.
Galina immigrated to the United States in 1980 and lived in New York City for many years before settling in Columbia, Missouri upon her retirement. When her first grandchild Leo was born, she became known to everyone as Gaga – a play on the word “baba” which means grandma in Russian.
Even if you had only met Galina briefly, you would have felt her warm smile and caught her twinkling eyes.
Mona's life was one of adventure and ambition. With the spirit of the Emerald Isle in her heart, she crossed the Atlantic and initially made her home in the Bronx, New York. It was there that she embarked on her career journey with IBM as a secretary at the Trump Tower in Manhattan. Her dedication and hard work led her to settle in Coxsackie, NY, where she continued her service with IBM in Kingston, NY. Upon retirement, Mona's warmth found a new avenue as the beloved "Greeter" at Coxsackie Central Schools. Her smile became a daily source of comfort and joy to the many students and staff she encountered.
Mona's life was not defined solely by her work but also by the relationships she cultivated, the lives she enriched and the strong faith she kept. Her Irish eyes always sparkled with mischief and merriment, bringing laughter and lightness to those around her. Mona's love for her family and friends was vast and unconditional. Her journey through life was marked by the same grace and courage with which she faced her final challenge.
As Mona reunites with loved ones who have gone before her, we imagine her greeted with open arms and the familiar strains of an Irish lullaby...most especially, her parents, her sister, Catherine "Nollaig" Coleman, and her brother, Timothy Hourihan, who predeceased her.
In honoring Mona's memory, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a woman dearly loved. Her passing leaves a void, but also a treasure trove of memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles to all who were fortunate enough to know her. We take solace in knowing that Mona's story does not end here but continues in the hearts of those she loved. Her legacy of compassion, resilience, gratitude towards others and the purest form of Irish charm will live on, inspiring us to embrace life with the same zest and love that she did.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Coxsackie, NY on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, at 12PM . Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Coxsackie, NY. Lewis M. Rose - July 16, 1957 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Red Hook)
Obituary Preview: Lew Rose passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 20, 2024 from long Covid complicated by several underlying medical conditions that destroyed his immune system. His beloved wife Jacqui was by his side holding his hand in his last moments.Along with Jacqui, Lew is survived by his brother Jay (Melanie Malherbe) and sons Larry and Ben (Rachel Ross), brother-in-law Bill Ross (Jorge Ayala), “heart daughter” Victoria Siemer (Tony Derby), honorary sons Lupe and Rogelio Galvan, “South African children” Victoria Forrester and Marthinus Van De Vyver, and his canine companions Sadie and Taffy, Lew was a truly remarkable man. He was enormously proud of his professional success which began as a law student at the University of Buffalo School of Law, defying the belief that an Ivy League pedigree was the only way to become a leader in the legal world. His career spanned 35+ years in both government and private practice, culminating in his role as Managing Partner of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP from which he retired in 2019. He led through his mandate of being “all in” and included in that philosophy partners, associates, and staff. He truly believed in mentoring, inclusion, kindness, ethical behavior, and hard work, guiding the firm through several profitable years. Along with his work, Lew’s passions included traveling with Jacqui to such memorable places as Antarctica (capped by his making the “Arctic Jump” into the freezing ocean as Jacqui watched stunned from the ship) and the Great Barrier Reef where he caught a “grander” marlin weighing over 1,000 lbs; attending concerts featuring such diverse artists as Santana, Lyle Lovett, Brian Wilson, and David Byrne; discovering fabulous restaurants and bars throughout the world, and raising a truly extraordinary cannabis crop once it became legal to do so in New York. Lew will be remembered fondly by friends, colleagues, golfing buddies, and the community of Red Hook/ Hudson Valley where he resided for the past eight years. His 60th birthday party, Lewstock, was attended by more than 100 people and featured a performance by David Bromberg. In that spirit, a celebration of Lew’s life is being planned for this spring. Alexander H. Solano - March 08, 1964 - February 06, 2024

Departed: 02/06/2024 (Red Hook)
Obituary Preview: Alexander was born into family of dairy framers where he learned from a young age to work on all machines around the farm. By the time he was a teenager he had built his own dune buggy which he loved to ride. As a young man, it soon became clear to him that the small town and country he lived in wasn’t cutting so he moved to Canada where he became a truck driver and mechanic on Mack Trucks. He most especially enjoyed the multiple trips from Toronto to Central America transporting equipment. He reached the point when he got tired of the life on the road he made his last trip back to his home country where he met the love of his life, Alexandra. The couple soon after had their son, David. They once again were experiencing the lack of fulfillment in the small country and he moved to United States by himself where he worked for 3 years waiting for his family to allowed to come. He resided in the Village of Red Hook since 1999 where he worked as a mechanic at Rhinebeck Equipment Rental then took off on his own as a self employed equipment mechanic. Sadly the man who loved to work with his hands was diagnosed with Parkinson which lead to him giving up the way of life he loved. Rest in peace.
