James "Jimmy" Fleck - September 10, 1949 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Cedar Lake)
Obituary Preview: James “Jimmy” Fleck -- faithful husband, father, Papa, and friend - peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
Jimmy was born in Chicago, Illinois to Lillian Kowalczyk (Ted) and Charles Fleck on September 10, 1949. He attended Columbia Junior High and Rich South and Rich East High Schools. It was not long after completing high school when he met his bride of 50 years Barbara (nee: Weisbrodt) and started a family. Shortly after, Jimmy started his 50-year career as a proud Local 5 Union laborer and foreman with construction companies like Brighton and Krug and K-Five Construction, where he spent over 35 years. Jimmy loved to be surrounded by family and friends whether it was in the screened-in porch, on the golf course, in the bar he owned for 14 years (Jimmy’s), or in his home. He loved to hear the sounds of laughter, music, a good bonfire, and the crack of a bat hitting a ball, especially when it was a Cubs home run. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending the winters in Florida golfing, cruising in his golf cart, playing bocce ball, or sitting by the pool with his wife and grandchildren.
But above all things, Jimmy was most proud of his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; their daughters Shannon (Rob) Vera, and Lezlie (Kristian) Rodriguez; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Noah (Samantha), Adrianna, Jennah, Alexis, and Ryan; his great-granddaughter Payton; brothers Charles (Judy), Jeff (late Cherie), late David, sister Kelley (John) Mehrtens, his brother-in-law Bill Weisbrodt (late Diane), sister-in-law Cheryl (late Butch) Weisbrodt, nieces and nephews, and many friends who were his family.
Please join us to celebrate his life, on Saturday, May 4 from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm at Burdan Funeral Home, 12901 Wicker Ave., Cedar Lake, IN 46303. A prayer service will take place at 5:30 pm.  We ask that you come wearing his favorite Chicago teams, Cubs and Bears.

Idalia “Yayi” Ruiz - May 21, 1950 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Cedar Lake)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Idalia “Yayi” Ruiz
Idalia “Yayi” Ruiz, a long-time resident of Northwest Indiana and Puerto Rico went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2024. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend whose journey touched many lives along the way. Most importantly, her role was mother to Cesar (JoAnna) Ruiz Jr. of Valparaiso, Indiana, Santos (Tammie) Ruiz of Wesley Chapel, Florida, and Jahaira (Luis) Mendoza of Hobart, Indiana.
Born on May 21, 1950, in the warmth of Santurce, Puerto Rico, Idalia was born to Doña Nelida and Don Santos Otero. She was the third of four children. Around the age of eight, she, along with three of her siblings, came to the states and settled in Chicago. The family later moved to Gary, Indiana where she raised her three children, but Yayi’s spirit was forever touched by the vibrant culture and sunshine of her homeland. Despite living far from its shores, her spirit always carried the rhythms and warmth of Puerto Rico. Her story unfolded across miles and memories, from the tropical shores of her homeland to the heartland of Northwest Indiana.
Known for her loving spirit and hospitable nature, Yayi will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her warmth and kindness knew no bounds, and her home in Indiana became a haven of love and joy for her children, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. The Ruiz and Mendoza families ask that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing. She is survived by her siblings, Aida Luz “Lucy” Otero (Illinois), Luis Antonio Otero (Puerto Rico), Nelida “Nelly” Montero (Florida), her beloved children, several adored grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home in Hobart, surrounded by her loving family and close friends. She found solace in her relationship with God, describing Him as her closest confidant. Yayi's legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, who will forever cherish her gentle parenting and enduring love. Her children remained steadfast by her side in her final moments, a testament to the depth of their love and the grace of God within them. Although she may have left this world, her spirit continues to shine brightly in the lives of those she touched.
In honoring Yayi's memory, let us remember her radiant smile, her compassionate spirit, and her love for her family. Although she may not have made it back to her warm island of Puerto Rico, may she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her mother and father basking in the eternal warmth of God's love.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at Jubilee Worship Center. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Flowers and memorial gifts may be sent to Jubilee Worship Center, 415 N Hobart Rd, Hobart, IN 46342.

Kathy Lee Szutenbach - September 04, 1956 - February 12, 2024

Departed: 02/12/2024 (Cedar Lake)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Kathy Szutenbach, on February 12th, 2024, at the age of 67. Kathy fought her cancer battle with unwavering strength until complications became too much. She was surrounded by her children, James (Lacey) Kozak and David Kozak, Jr. and peacefully departed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Dianna Martin, and her beloved husband, Harry “Hank" Szutenbach.
Mom was born third of five children and had fond memories of her childhood with her siblings.
Active from the time she was young, she was a full-marathon runner, and one of her favorite hobbies was going for runs and hikes in scenic parks, whether alone or with her husband. We have great memories of the bike rides she used to take us on as children.
A dental assistant of nearly 40 years at Dr. W. Smutzer and (subsequently) Dr. R. Leung's office, Kathy loved her work, the patients, and her coworkers that filled her days with laughs and stories. She would have continued forever if health had allowed it.
Equal to her love for activity, Kathy had a passion for food. She loved to cook and try new things. Throughout the years she would talk about the latest restaurant she tried with a coworker and how we "need to try it!", or her and Hank's latest roadtrip to try something new. One time she laughingly presented us with very large jars of pickles that she and Hank had gotten several counties away at a gas station because a patient had recommended them and she remembered when they were passing through the area. If you had never been to a restaurant and wondered if it was any good, you asked her. If she had not tried it, she probably at least knew about it.
She was a walking encyclopedia, especially of any song, singer, or band she liked. She knew who did it, the album, the year it came out, and was always in search of the coolest new sound. Besides being impressive, it probably came in handy, as she was an avid New York Times Crossword cruciverbalist.
Most of all, Kathy was a devoted and supportive mother. Later she became an amazing mother-in-law as well.
From dressing us up as Peter Pan, Wendy, and the Lost Boys as a family to go trick-or-treating when we were little, to the fact that we knew that birthdays meant waking up to homemade banners that she artfully drew and hung while we were sleeping, she filled our childhood with warmth and magic. She adored animals, especially cats, and instilled that in us too. She loved spending time with us throughout our adult lives as well.
She filled the lives of those she cared about with fun and laughter, and will be sorely missed.
It was her wish to forgo a funeral or other formalities. However, if you wish to make a donation in her honor, please do so to the American Cancer Society, The Humane Society of the United States, or the American Lung Association.
To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Kathy, please visit our Tree Store.
