Sheila M. Meehan - October 20, 1931 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Ship Bottom)
Obituary Preview: Sheila Marie DeWeever Meehan, 92, passed away on February 20, 2024, following her brave and difficult battle with Alzheimer’s Disease which took her mind away from us so much sooner than expected. Her caregivers at Springhome at Galloway Memory Care were amazed at her ability to always offer a big glowing smile and laughter even while living through the indignities of Alzheimer’s. It is truly heartbreaking when the child ultimately must take on the role of being a mother to their mother.
Sheila was born on October 20, 1931, to Carl DeWeever and Helen Mahoney DeWeever and was raised in Jersey City with her sister Eileen DeWeever Lukenda who passed away too soon in 1975 at the age of 48 and her brothers, World War II veterans, Carl DeWeever who passed away in 2002 and Edward “Buddy” DeWeever who passed away in 2011.
Sheila attended St. Michael’s High School in Jersey City graduating in 1950. On July 11, 1953, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Ronald Meehan, who predeceased her on February 8, 2002. As newlyweds, Sheila and Tom spent 3 years living at Travis Airforce Base in California following their wedding day and Atlantic City honeymoon while Tom served his country during the Koren War.
Upon their return to New Jersey in 1955, Sheila began working for the International Teamsters, Local Union Office as Confidential Secretary to the Union President, Michael Joseph “Red Mike” Quill.
She often told us stories of those days. One in particular of when Red Mike loaned Tom and Sheila his girlfriend’s brand-new pink Cadillac so they could attend Tom’s formal St. Peter’s College prom in New York City so they didn’t have to ride “the tubes” in their finery.
In 1964 Sheila and Tom moved to their first home in the Somerset section of Franklin Township. Sheila was a past communicant of St. Matthias Parish in Somerset. She began working for Rutgers University in 1966, managing the Student Accounting Offices in the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses. In 1977 Sheila was promoted to Assistant University Bursar, a position created for her, in the Office of Business Affairs where she worked until her retirement in 1991.
Sheila’s love of Long Beach Island began in the early 1970’s when the family started renting the same home on Beach Ave. in Brandt Beach from the Murphy family for several years before buying their own home in Brighton Beach in 1976. So many memories of good times at Widas, the Burn's Brothers and their Irish Wakes which was within walking distance.
She was an active parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church and was a Secular Franciscan. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and visited the sick at the Southern Ocean County Hospital bringing them the comfort of Communion. She led Morning Devotions and Prayer Group at St. Francis. She was an amazing cook and loved to bring her soups to Soup and Stations.
Sheila was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and a friend and good neighbor to many. Several of her neighbors and church pals enjoyed her Irish soda bread and rice pudding as a thank you for their many kindnesses. During their monthly gal-pal luncheons and movies, raucous laughter would often be heard from their table as they shared their humorous stories. Mom was fun to be around. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always the life of the party. We called her the Energizer Bunny because she was always hopping around doing something and couldn’t just sit idle. She would often be heard counting her many blessings for having such a supportive and caring community as St. Francis and for her many local area neighbors who were always available to lend a helping hand or a kindhearted ear over a cup of tea.
Sheila is survived by her daughter, Marybeth Hennessy and her husband Dan and their two daughters Casey Sheila and Eileen Hennessy. She is also survived by her daughter Kathleen Meehan and her four children, Charlie Barisonek and his wife CJ; Amanda Hoover and her husband Chris and their son Jack; John Thomas “JT” Levonick and Thomas Levonick. She is also survived by her niece, Ellen DeWeever Larkin of Ocean Acres and her husband Frank who were always available to Aunt Sheila with help, support and family comfort, and many other nieces and nephews whom Sheila held dear to her heart.

Joseph Edwin Brownstein - March 14, 1933 - May 31, 2023

Departed: 05/31/2023 (Ship Bottom)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Edwin Brownstein (b. March 14, 1933), son of Dorothy (née Shapiro) and Irving Brownstein, died at the age of 90 on May 31, 2023 at his home on Long Beach Island, NJ. He died surrounded by adoring women, as he was in life. Born on Staten Island, raised in Syracuse, New York, “Joe” attended Syracuse University and was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed at both Fort Dix and Fort Huachuca, where he was crowned ping pong champion. Joe went on to become a CPA and an astute businessman, managing both an accounting practice and one of the first licensed women’s health clinics in New Jersey. Joe spent most of his life in Northern NJ and New City, NY, and more recently, South Florida and LBI.
Joe was a miracle of modern medicine. Diagnosed with heart disease in his early 30s, he underwent two open-heart surgeries during his lifetime. He became an avid runner to combat the disease but never ceased eating his beloved pastrami sandwiches, butter-crunch candies, and bacon. Joe was known for his love of fast boats and fancy cars; Cuban cigars and cosmos; and most importantly, his generosity of spirit. Joe loved a good celebration and often hosted extravagant parties for family and friends. He was gifted at drawing new friends into his orbit and formed lasting friendships throughout his long life.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Laurie Brownstein (née Resnick), and their daughter, Chloe Brownstein. He was predeceased by his sister, Bonita Goldstein and his first wife, Roslyn Brownstein (née Staloff), and is survived by their three children: Glenn, Evan and Lynn Brownstein, as well as his grandchildren, Jessica and Daniel Brownstein and Isadore Haviland. Joe used to say, “You’ll miss me when I’m gone,” and truer words were never spoken.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 1119 Long Beach Blvd., Ship Bottom, NJ 08008. Services are private.

Departed: 05/30/2023 (Ship Bottom)
Obituary Preview: Robert Curry, Sr. died at Abington Hospital, Abington, PA on May 30, 2023 at the age of 80.
Bob was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on February 3, 1943, the son of the late Andrew and Marie (Freeman) Curry. He was named for an uncle, bearing the middle name of one of the many old NJ families he descended from. He grew up in Metuchen, NJ, where he graduated from Metuchen High School in 1960; he was an active member of his school’s track team, as well as various science and language clubs.
Bob got a job at Engelhard Corporation (now BASF) in Menlo Park, NJ as a custodian in 1963, while also earning a degree part-time at University College, Rutgers. After graduating from University College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1967, he quickly rose the ranks at Engelhard, working as a Computer Scientist; he retired as the “Manager of Emerging Technologies” in 1998.
In 1966 he married Joanne Cosgrove, whom he had met on a blind date the previous year. Joanne pre-deceased Bob on November 17, 2022 after 56 years of marriage.
Initially residing in Edison and Hamilton Square, Bob and his family moved to Hillsborough, NJ in 1978. After retirement, Bob and Joanne moved to Long Beach Island, NJ, later moving to the Perry’s Lake area of Manahawkin. After the death of his wife, Bob moved to Lafayette Hill, PA to be closer to his children. He actively volunteered at the St. Francis Community Center food bank on Long Beach Island for over 20 years. His work there filled him with pride and also brought him many new friendships. He loved having lunch or coffee with “the guys” as often as possible. Bob also loved working with his hands, enjoying such hobbies as model ship construction and building bird houses. He was the king of puzzle books and especially loved Sudoku. He and Joanne enjoyed seeing their two grandsons Ryall and Declan most of all, sharing holidays and activities with them whenever they could. Everyone who worked or spent any time with Bob remarked on his kindness, selflessness, and charm; the staff at his assisted living facility in Lafayette Hill quickly deemed him their “favorite.”
