Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for generations to come.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist with writing and submitting the obituary to newspapers or online platforms.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, burial details, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with payment for the publication fee.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their story is told accurately. This can be a therapeutic exercise, allowing you to reflect on your life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also an opportunity to celebrate the person's personality and spirit. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help bring comfort and smiles to those who read it.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're unsure how to address in the obituary, consider consulting with other family members or a trusted friend. It's essential to be honest while still being respectful of the deceased and their loved ones.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's values, interests, or sense of humor.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance, consider enlisting the help of a funeral home or mortuary staff member. They often have experience crafting tributes and can provide valuable support during this difficult time.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms specialize in hosting obituaries, allowing you to share the news with a wider audience while saving on traditional newspaper publication fees. These sites often offer additional features such as guest books and photo galleries.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several days or even weeks. Be sure to check with the publication for their specific policies.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication's policies. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not permit changes once the obituary has been published. It's essential to proofread carefully before submission to avoid errors.

What if I need to correct an error in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you discover an error in the published obituary. They will guide you through their correction process, which may involve publishing a revised version or issuing a correction notice.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday of the deceased, you may be able to do so through the original publication or by posting it on social media platforms.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died unexpectedly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or unexpectedly, it's essential to be sensitive to the grieving family and friends. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments while avoiding language that might be perceived as insensitive or judgmental.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

This can be challenging! When dealing with complex family relationships, prioritize honesty while being respectful of all parties involved. Consider seeking guidance from other family members or a trusted friend if needed.

Can I include information about memorial donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer memorial donations to support a favorite charity or cause instead of receiving flowers. Include details about where donations can be sent and how they will be used.

What if I'm unsure about certain details in the obituary?

If you're unsure about specific facts or dates in the person's life, don't hesitate to ask other family members or friends for clarification. It's better to double-check than risk publishing incorrect information.

Can I write an obituary for someone who didn't have immediate family?

Yes! Even if the deceased didn't have immediate family members, they may have had close friends or acquaintances who would appreciate reading about their life and accomplishments. Consider reaching out to these individuals for input and support.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

No single right way exists for writing an obituary. However, most follow a general structure that includes essential biographical information followed by personal anecdotes and details about funeral services (if applicable).
