Susan Elizabeth Young - January 26, 1944 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Chico)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved, dedicated and valiant mother, Susan Elizabeth Campbell Young, died after a tenacious battle with Alzheimer’s Disease the morning of April 20, 2024 at the age of 80 years old in Chico, CA. She died with her loving daughter’s family at her side at Amber Grove Memory Care. The family would like to thank the staff for their dedicated care in her final months.
Sue was born in Santa Monica, CA on January 26, 1944 to her parents, Betty Jayne and Colin LeGros Campbell, while her father was away at war. He was sent a telegram to inform him of her birth! She lived with her mother and her beloved Grandparents (Ernest LeRoy and Helen Elizabeth Thomas) until he returned. Her beloved sister Patricia Anne and her brother Bruce Thomas Hugh were born and in 1951 the family moved to Orinda, CA where Colin was employed with Kaiser Cement. She graduated Miramonte High School in 1962.
At the age of 18, Sue met the love of her life, Gary Lee Young at the Rheem Bowling Alley on a double date. It wasn’t long into the date, each with another person, that they realized they only had eyes for each other! They married on May 21, 1966 with a fancy reception at The Claremont in Berkeley, CA. Gary set up a Numismatics business in Oakland, CA and in 1968 their first child, Kevin Lee Young was born.
1n 1971 they moved to Moraga and had their second child, Christine (Chrissie) Anita Young (Weston). Their neighbors were like second family and became lifelong friends. Sue was a devoted Little League Mom, Soccer Mom, a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader, and member of The Moraga Tennis Club. Sue was always up for fun, from Disneyland trips to 2 week treks down the Green River in Utah. The family enjoyed camping and backpacking at June Lake and Lake Tahoe.
In 1981 Gary and Sue made a big decision to leave the life they knew in the suburbs to pursue a lifelong dream of living in the country. They bought 80 acres (Rock Creek Ranch) above the tiny town of Manton, CA, again finding new chosen family.
Sue spent the next 30+ years creating and volunteering at her beautiful ranch and in the community. She worked as an employee or volunteer at the Manton School nearly the entire time she lived there. Many years were spent as a Teaching Aid with her beloved friend Marilyn Lucas. She would fill in as the cook, help make costumes, help with field trips and performances, games and more.
After Chrissie left for college in 1989, Sue and friends founded The Manton Apple Festival. This tiny festival has grown into a large and anticipated event that raises much needed funds for the town of Manton. It is one of her proudest accomplishments.
It was in Manton that her love of fly fishing grew, since they could cast right out their front door on Lake Christine. They eventually went into business with The Fly Shoppe in Redding, CA. She was a proud member of The Shasta Mayflies and made dear friends there.
Sue was proudest of her family. Over the years she welcomed 5 grandchildren: Kelly Marie Young, Matthew Lee Young, Molly Miriam Young, Jayne Lee Weston and Alexa Kate Weston. These lucky grandkids had a grandmother who would get on the floor and play with them! They made art, baked cookies and went on adventures. She attended every graduation and performance she could. She often invited the grandkids to stay with her for a few nights over the summer (Camp Grandma)! Her grandkids fondly remember her always bringing a pack of M&M’s along when she visited.
In the summer, Sue spent HOURS picking blackberries by hand to make her very famous Rock Creek Ranch Seedless Blackberry Jam. She sold this jam at the Manton Apple Festival, selling out in a couple hours each year. She saw bears, rattlesnakes and more on these berry picking escapades! Luckily she was able to teach her kids and grandkids her magic recipe.
She was also known for her amazing apple pies. Let’s be honest, Sue was well-known for her cooking. Sue was an amazing chef and baker. So much so she even got a job with Gary as the cook and caretaker of the Bailey Creek Lodge in Manton in the 1990’s. They met many people there that would become dear friends. Sue also spent time working at Kremer Chiropractic in Red Bluff, again, loving the interactions with people who were like family.
On August 18, 2012 The Ponderosa Fire ravaged through the area and burned the entire ranch and outbuildings to the ground. Sue and Gary took comfort in a rental in Red Bluff while they battled insurance and finally were able to buy a home again in Manton, this one closer to town and neighbors. On November 5, 2018 Gary died and three days later her beloved sister Pat (Gary) Slowinski lost her home to The Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. Who better to help a person through a home fire than Sue? The sisters lived together for months as Pat battled her insurance. It was a special time for them. In 2020 the family decided to move Sue to Chico, to be closer to them as Alzheimer’s Disease presented itself. Sue’s granddaughter Ali Weston moved in with her and they spent the next year and a half together, again, very special times for Sue. In the fall of 2022, Sue moved to the Lodge at The Terraces in Chico. She spent nearly every moring with her son-in-law Steve, whether it be coffee dates or nature drives with the dogs Colby and Jack, all the while singing Neil Diamond and Willie Nelson at the top of her lungs. She was always up for a burger! In Fall of 2023 the family moved Sue to Amber Grove Memory Care. She became close with staff and loved going on the bus rides the most!
In her last years, Sue maintained her love of the outdoors, music, adventure, good food, and her family. Her family feels lucky to have had the opportunity to have her close the last few years of her life, and have greatly enjoyed celebrating big and small days with her by their sides. Whether it was passing out candy to hundreds of children on Halloween, a drive around town to view Christmas lights (she always loved the inflatable decor the most), celebrating birthdays with cake and ice cream, or just a simple lunch outing, Sue spread love and joy in everything she did.
Sue is survived by her son Kevin Young, his wife Megan and their children Kelly, Matt and Molly, her daughter Chrissie Weston, her husband Steve and their children Jayne, Ali and Jakob Duley, her sister Pat Slowinski and her husband Gary, her brother Bruce Campbell and his wife Cindy, her niece Karen Vicari and her husband Vic and their daughter Kiana, her cousins Laurie Mayorga and her son Nick and Patrice Danielson. We will be having a coffee and donuts (Sue’s favorite) Celebration of Life at 10:00 on Saturday, May 4 at the Recreation Room at Northwood Commons Place in Chico, CA (in between Henshaw, Lassen and Cussick Ave’s). Please RSVP if possible to Chrissie: creationsbarefeet@gmail.com

Michael Joseph Turk - September 29, 1942 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Chico)
Obituary Preview: Michael Joseph Turk, L.Ac., 81, died peacefully at his Chico home on Thursday, April 11 with his wife Charlotte Harkness at his side. Michael was born on September 29, 1942 to Joseph Turk and Lorraine Hoff Turk in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After growing up in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee where he attended St. Rita’s Catholic Elementary School and West Allis Central High School (Class of 1960), Michael attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, IL and graduated as an electronic technician before enlisting in the Navy in 1961. During his time in the Navy, Michael served on the USS Nathan Hale, a Polaris submarine, maintaining and repairing the submarine’s computers and working as a missile technician. A favorite memory of his service was the summer month he spent in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain.
After his military service, Michael began his career working as an electronics engineer in the military and civilian industries while exploring most of the United States and parts of Canada. Michael first visited California in the mid-1960’s. His insatiable curiosity and several health issues led him to begin studying macrobiotics, medicinal and edible herbs and plants, and Asian massage to reduce pain and improve flexibility. During the early to mid-1970’s, Michael also lived briefly in Boston, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Palo Alto.
President Nixon’s historic visit to China in 1972 sparked a renewed national interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — especially acupuncture — and in 1976, Michael moved to the San Diego area where he continued to work for various electronic companies while teaching Shiatsu massage and studying acupuncture and Chinese medicine. He earned his A.A. from Occidental Institute of Chinese Studies (1980) and a B.A. in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from California Acupuncture College (1983). In 1983, Michael passed the very challenging CA acupuncture exam, becoming one of the first licensed non-Asian practitioners of acupuncture and TMC in CA. After beginning his private practice as a licensed acupuncturist in San Diego County, Michael, a member of the Chico macrobiotic movement in the early 70’s, returned to Chico in 1985 and established the East West Health Center (EWHC), an alternative health clinic. He directed the Center for 25 years before semi-retiring in 2010 and fully retiring in 2020. He frequently traveled to the San Diego area to treat former patients and operated a small clinic in Lake Almanor for several years. Michael was an amazing healer and over the many years of his practice, he treated over 9,000 patients.
Michael was a highly respected leader and teacher in the international acupuncture and massage community, developing courses, presenting at professional conferences, and mentoring and inspiring countless men and women, many who now practice and use his methods. Considered a pioneer in the treatment of chronic pain and disability, he served on the California State Oriental Medical Association (CSOMA) and testified as an expert witness to the CA Acupuncture Board and the Little Hoover Commission. Passionate about his work and spreading his knowledge, Michael was a published author, including his book Pain's Healing Secret, countless journal articles, pamphlets, handbooks, and two peer-reviewed papers about Ancient China that he was especially proud of.
A single father of two, the multi-faceted Michael loved to travel, explore the outdoors, play games and cards, enjoy live theatre and concerts, and ride the fiercest roller coasters he could find. An avid reader, he collected a large amount of books, especially those related to Ancient China and archaeology. After the Camp Fire, Michael was deeply saddened by the loss of his extensive library including a number of rare editions. In 1994, he traveled to China with a small group from Chico and after his marriage to Charlotte in 2007, they enjoyed travel to many parts of the United States and countries in Europe including several trips to Eastern Europe. After his official retirement, Michael enjoyed having more time to research, write, and pursue new projects. He was a man of strong faith and never lost his passion for healing, the Chinese culture, and learning something new every day.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill Turk, and his nephew Brian Turk. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, son Joe Turk, daughter Zara Quintana (Calvin), step-daughter Sarah Harkness, step-son Billy Harkness (Sara), seven grandchildren (Kyle, TJ, Katie, Cali, Zander, Liam, & Hazel), his niece Jean Turk Butenhoff of Delafield, WI, many cousins including Joanne Graham of Chico, and many step-nieces and nephews.

Mary Carolyn Minyard Hamilton - September 04, 1941 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Chico)
Obituary Preview: On a beautiful sunny day, Mary Carolyn Minyard Hamilton passed from this world into the arms of Jesus. Mama was a lover of life, children, animals and the Giants, but she especially loved her family. Our mother was a wife for 63 years to Jerry Dale Hamilton (who passed away on November 8th, 2022) and mother to Joni Hamilton Tolon (Michael), Jon Hamilton (Kathy) and Jennifer Hamilton Skinner (Jim). She is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Hamilton Morris (Shane), Cady Tolon Macauley (Olajide), Elizabeth Tolon McInerney (Tom), Joel Tolon, Rachel Tolon, Courtney Skinner, Caitlin Skinner and Conner Skinner. Great grandchildren surviving include Luke Morris, Logan Morris, Landon Morris, Levi Morris, Tijesu Macauley and Ikemi Macauley. Born on September 4th, 1941, Mama arrived into the world along with her twin brother, David to her parents, Albert and Pauline Minyard and her big brother, Wendell (Tink). Her older brother, Albert Jefferson (A.J.) passed away before she was born.
Mom was born in Lauratown, Arkansas and moved along with her family to Redlands, California when she was four years old due to her father needing work and to be close to family members. Mom grew up in Redlands, California and graduated from Redlands High School. She and Dad were married in 1959 and together created a little family. They moved to Chico, California in 1967 and lived there for many years. Being extremely hard workers, during the 70’s Mom and Dad purchased several rental properties and a couple of different grocery stores, even when they had never worked in that type of business before. The grocery stores were sold and then a year or two later, Mom and Dad decided to purchase Mid-Valley Lumber Company in Willows, California. This was also despite our parents never having worked in the lumber business before. Mid-Valley Lumber Company ended up expanding to additional locations in Williams and Colusa over the years. Our parents started their retirement journey in the early 90’s, and then after selling Mid-Valley Lumberyards, they retired full time in 2004. They alternated traveling to Arizona in the winter, then to LaPine, Oregon in the summer, (chasing the sunshine). They also had a beautiful home in Willows, California that Dad built in 1983 completing all the custom woodwork himself. Mom and Dad had a beautiful marriage together and loved each other very much. Over the years, Mom enjoyed softball, camping, golfing, and baseball, especially the San Francisco Giants. More than anything else however, Mama enjoyed her family and being together. It was the most important thing to her. Mom tried to live her beliefs, values and Christianity to all who knew her. She had an amazing sense of humor that she used every single day. She had the gift of laughter and she and Dad had many great memories and times together. Mother’s favorite statement was how ‘thankful, grateful and blessed she had been her entire life’. She believed strongly in God and where she was heading after this physical life was over. We love you, Mama!

Debra Ann Cantwell - November 15, 1963 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Chico)
Obituary Preview: "I love you to the moon and back"
Debra "Debbie" Cantwell (née Payne), a beacon of laughter and warmth in the lives of many, left this world far too soon on March 24, 2024, in Oroville, CA. Her departure has left a void in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her, but her spirit—a brilliant mix of kindness, generosity, and unwavering love—will forever color the memories of her beloved family and friends.
Born to Carolyn and the late Delmer Payne Sr. on November 15, 1960, Debbie was the bright light in her family, growing up alongside her siblings Robert, Delmer Jr., Sherry, and the late Teressa. She liked to say that her journey through life was rich, not in terms of material wealth but in the unbreakable bonds and countless moments of joy shared with her family.
Debbie’s heart belonged to her family, first and foremost. She was a fiercely loving mother to Denise, Sabrina, Jessica, and Dennis, and her love expanded with the arrival of each grandchild: Trevor, Abigail, Gabriel, CJ, Brandon, Tianna, Tajahnae, Brittany, Kolbie, Dyklen, and Roselynn, not to forget her cherished great-grandson, Amirion. James Jones, her long-time boyfriend, stood by her, sharing the many adventures of their blended family.
A proud alumna of Chico High School, Debbie’s education was but a chapter in a life rich with simpler, more heartfelt pursuits. Her achievements were measured not in certificates or accolades but in the laughter-filled rooms, the quiet moments of comfort provided to those in need, and the unwavering support she gave her children in every one of their undertakings.
Debbie had a rare gift; she could uplift spirits merely with her presence, a testament to her beautiful, kind-hearted nature. Days with her were suffused with joy, generosity, and the unconditional love that she extended to everyone lucky enough to cross her path.
As we prepare to bid farewell, a service celebrating Debbie's remarkable life will be held at Brusie Funeral Home in Chico, CA, on April 12th. For those wishing to honor Debbie's memory, the family welcomes donations, flowers, and memorial contributions in lieu of your presence.
Debbie leaves behind a legacy of love, encapsulated in the memories of her mother Carolyn; daughters Denise, Sabrina, and Jessica; son Dennis; siblings Robert, Delmer Jr., and Sherry Sue; her grandchildren and great-grandson; and her devoted partner, James. As we reflect on the joy she brought into our lives, we find comfort in knowing that while she may have departed from our sight, she remains forever etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, Debbie. Your light will never fade.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral service, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.
