Rita Torrez Riojas - February 21, 1943 - July 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Our beloved mother, grandmother, and wife passed away July 3, 2022 surrounded by her family. Rita Torrez Riojas was born on February 21, 1943, on a farm in Hockley County to Nicanor and Rita Torrez.
She married the love of her life of 60 years, Genovevo Riojas, on November 16, 1961, in Miami, Florida. Rita was a migrant worker for many years, a cafeteria worker at Brownfield Intermediate School, and a housewife. She was also a caretaker for her mother-in-law, mother, and daughter-in-law. She played a role in raising each one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the family grew.
Rita was known for her hospitality to strangers and family alike, many of whom lovingly called her Grandma. She loved watching her grandkids participate in sports and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, often out cheering whoever was watching games with her. She loved to quilt, embroider and crochet and taught those skills to others. She meticulously made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren creating unique patterns and hand stitching each one. She also loved to cook and many meals were shared in her kitchen, which was the heart of the home. Her tortillas were always on the menu and everyone will definitely miss those, especially Geno. Rita was a life-long member of the Brownfield Church of Christ. She was strong in her faith and hoped for all to be Godly in their walk of life. The Riojas family would like to thank Bridge Hospice for their care and support.
Rita is preceded in death by her parents, Nicanor and Rita Torrez, three sisters Ortencia Garza, Ninfa Martinez and Bertha Riojas, one brother, Nicanor Torrez, and daughter-in-law Bernice Arrezola Riojas.
She is survived by her husband, Genovevo Riojas. Four sisters: Santos Martinez (Brownfield), Oralia Coronado (Homestead, FL), Estella Torrez (Ruskin, FL), Yolanda Torrez (Brownfield) and one brother, Fred (Maya) Torrez (Warren, MN). Her children: Ramon (Lacie) Riojas (Brownfield), Felix (Eileen) Riojas (Brownfield), Robert (Colleen) Riojas (Plainview, TX), Angela (Bobby) Lawrence (Brownfield) and Irene (Javiel) Riojas-Ramirez (Round Rock, TX). Ten grandchildren: Jason Molina, Valerie Flores, Jonathon Lawrence, Kristen Carden, Erin Lawrence, Donovan Riojas, Zachary Tovar, Jeron Lawrence, Jaesie Casanova, Beya Brown and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service for Rita Torrez Riojas will be held at 2 pm Friday, July 8, 2022, at Brownfield Church of Christ, with Marcelino Banda officiating. Burial will follow in Brownfield Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.

Obituary Preview: The family of Jose Nicolas Silva, 83, of Brownfield announces the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather on July 1, 2022. He peacefully left this world surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He will fondly be remembered as a man of great faith.
He was born on March 15, 1939 in Rio Grande City, Texas to Pedro Sr. and Herminia Silva. He met the love of his life, Maria Silva, and mother of his children in Sublette, Kansas. They were married on December 21, 1966 and spent 55 amazing years together.
Jose is survived by his wife Maria Silva of Brownfield; 6 children, Jose Silva Jr. and wife, Estella of Brownfield, Cynthia Mendoza and husband, Manuel of Brownfield, Johnny Silva and wife, Vickie of Brownfield, Letty Stringham and husband, Jeff of Gilbert, AZ, Jimmy Silva and wife, Krissy of Brownfield, Crystal Gonzalez and husband, Miguel of Brownfield; 2 brothers and 2 sisters of La Casita, Rio Grande City, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and another great grandchild on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Sr. and Herminia Silva, son, Benito Silva, brothers, Mariano, Baltazar, Pedro Jr., Roberto and Lupe, and one sister, Amalia Garza.
Jose was a devoted family man and served as an elder of the church. He was most proud of the legacy he built with his wife. He never failed to say how much he loved his family. He was a man of many words filled with wisdom. He loved reading his bible and sharing the good news of his Saviour. He could carry a conversation with a complete stranger and befriended anyone he met, and always asked if they had Jesus in their heart. Jose was a man of many trades which included carpentry, construction and cooking. To his grandchildren he was the greatest pancake maker. He always said "No tengo nada, pero tengo frijoles!". He will be truly missed. His deepest desire was for his family and friends to seek God and find their salvation. We hold onto the hope that one day we will be reunited with him. As for now we hold on to the memories that we are left with. In the tribulations and victories of life he always said “My God is a GREAT God!”
A Funeral Service for Jose Silva will be held at 10 am on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Brownfield First Baptist Church with burial following in Brownfield Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. Viewing will be Tuesday, July 5, 2022, from 10 am to 8 pm, and Wednesday, July 6, 2022, from 8 am to 8 pm at Brownfield Funeral Home.

He was born to George "Ray" and Betty Sue Hall on September 29th, 1964 in Tom Green County, Texas. Gary married his sweetheart Ramona Kay Kreiser on October 8th, 1993 who preceded him in death in 2021.
Gary moved to Brownfield, Texas in 1995 where he and Mona raised their three handsome boys. He worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for over 20 years while running his own business, Hall's Lawn Care. After retiring from the TDCJ he began a career at TX DOT where he enjoyed operating the heavy equipment and driving all the roads in Terry County.
Over the years he proved to be a caring, proud, and hardworking man who always made sure his family was taken care of and loved spoiling Mona's day care kids. Always the jokester, Gary loved to make people laugh.
Gary is preceded in death by his wife Ramona Hall and his father Ray Hall. He is survived by his mother, Betty Sue Hall; Sister Kathy Pattillo; Niece Amanda Moore and her twins; Brother and wife Ken and Dana Hall; Son and wife Travis and Chelsea Hall; Son Jacob Hall; Son Derek Hall; Bonus Daughter DeNell Duncan; Bonus Granddaughter Olivia "Porkchop".

Genaro Arguellez Sr. was surrounded by his loving family and went to his heavenly home June 26, 2022. Genaro was born in Yorktown on December 2, 1942. He married the love of his life Hela in 1964. They shortly moved from Yorktown to Gomez. Genaro was known for his contagious smile and his great sense of humor. He knew no strangers. He was the first to lend a helping hand or give a kind word to someone in need. He was a strong role model to his family and friends. Genaro was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will always be remembered making his rounds all around town in his white ford truck. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sirildo and Dominga Arguellez, wife Hela Arguellez, daughter Norma Arguellez, son Genaro Arguellez Jr., brothers Domingo Arguellez, Eliojo Arguellez Luis Arguellez and Catarino Sr. Arguellez and sister Maria Cruz.

Obituary Preview: Clemmie Jack Cobb, age 82, of Plains, Texas, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022, in Frisco, Texas. He was born July 1, 1939, in Brownfield, Texas, to Louise (Mobley) and Paul Cobb. Jack married the love of his life, Mary Janelle Parks, in Plains, Texas on July 7, 1962, and they were blessed with three daughters.
Jack was a 1957 graduate of Plains High School and obtained his bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University. He later earned a master’s degree from Texas Tech University. Jack taught school in Plains before serving 12 years as principal at Smyer and Sands (Ackerly) High School. He moved his family back to Plains in 1978 where he became a strong contributor to the agriculture industry in Yoakum County and the region as both the owner/operator of an aerial applicator business and as a farmer.
Jack was an avid pilot and loved nothing more than to share his passion for flying with and for others.
Jack served his community in many capacities throughout his many years in Plains and Yoakum County. He was a past member of the Plains ISD school board, served as a Commissioner for Yoakum County for several years, managed the Yoakum County airport, was long-time chairman of the Yoakum County Hospital Board of Directors, and was in various leadership roles with the Texas Grain Sorghum Producers, National Grain Sorghum Producers, and US Grains Council. He was a deacon and trustee for First Baptist Church, Plains and was an ardent participant in the disaster relief efforts of Texas Baptist Men. He was a Master Mason in the Grand Lodge of Texas.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Janelle; his daughters, Kristi Swinnea and her husband, Matt of McKinney, Texas, Karen McMinn and her husband, Shane of Canyon, Texas, and Kemi Mayes of Carrollton, Texas; his grandchildren, Easton Jack Swinnea, Emily Jayce (Collin) Britt, Ellie Jade Swinnea, Brighton Shane McMinn, Brailey Shyenne (Juan) Ramirez, Brecklyn Shea McMinn, and Ian Nicholas Mayes.
He is preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Joe Cobb.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Plains, Texas, on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 10:00 am under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home. A visitation will be held Friday, July 8, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Plains.

Obituary Preview: Yolanda "Yoli" Ann Sanchez, 44, passed away at her home in Seminole on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
Yolanda was born, March 9, 1978, in Brownfield to Susan Melendez of Brownfield and Joe A. Sanchez of Arlington. She grew up primarily in Brownfield, although she spent some time in Lubbock and Dallas.
Yolanda was a very loving person who was always willing to help someone in need. Yoli was creative and enjoyed arts and crafts. She also loved her dogs, especially "Bonez," and spoiled them more than her children. Bonez was her protector.
Her family will dearly miss her smile, her sense of humor and her wise advice. Yoli was a fighter and battled her cancer for nearly 10 years. She was preceded in death by her brother, Sirildo "Eto" Melendez.
She is survived by the love of her life, Israel Duran of Seminole; her mother, Susan Melendez of Brownfield; her father, Joe A. Sanchez (Noemi) of Arlington; her grandfather, Domingo Cruz of Brownfield; 3 daughters, Vanessa Sanchez of Brownfield, Marcelia Sanchez (Jesus) of Lubbock, and Alexis Garcia of Lubbock; a son, Alejandro Munoz of Brownfield; a brother, Johnny Sanchez of Brownfield; 4 sisters, Mary Angel Sanchez of Oklahoma, Jessica Sanchez, Amber Clark, and Brittany Clark all of Arlington; 6 grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lydia was born in Haskell, TX on March 6, 1950, to Harold and Earlene (Ammons) Meyers. She primarily grew up in Pampa with her grandparents, Earl and Nora Ammons before meeting the love of her life, Billy Jowers, while visiting family in Brownfield. They married on May 4, 1976, and remained in Brownfield raising their two boys, Chris and JBob.
Her favorite past time was shopping and crafts. She was known for the beautiful journals she made and shared with friends. Lydia had a very generous heart and was always willing to help others. She loved her family and always tried to put them first - they will miss her daily phone calls checking in on them.
Lydia is preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and her brother, Lynn.

Marjorie went to be with her heavenly Father Tuesday, May 31, 2022, in Lubbock. She was born June 5, 1930, to Garland and Modelle (Sanders) Cabe in Tahoka. She married Milton Briscoe, Jr. on June 16, 1946, and they were married for 63 years until Jr.’s passing in 2009.
Marjorie went by many names, Marjie Dee, DeeDee, Dee but the names she loved most were Mom, Granny and Granny Dee. Mom was actively involved in helping Dad farm, hauling trailers and building cotton modules. Mom was an incredible seamstress, cook and gardener. Mom and Dad spent every free hour fishing at lake Amistad with family and friends. She loved to talk and spend time with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton, son, Johnny Dale, daughter, Jamie Briscoe, son-in-law, Mickey Joplin, brother, Bud Cabe and wife Ernie.
Mom is survived by her daughter, Judy Joplin; two grandsons, Chad Joplin and wife, Trey, Jason Joplin; granddaughter, Angela Dehls; two great grandsons, Aaron Joplin and wife, Sarah, Justin Dehls; step-great grandson Kirklin Zorns; one great-great grandson, Henry Joplin; and baby J coming in September.

Treva was born on October 26, 1935 in Tishomingo, Oklahoma to Loyd and Bertha Deaton. She moved to the Brownfield community in September of 1970. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Treva enjoyed camping in the mountains and square dancing. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. Treva worked for Energas and enjoyed spending her lunch breaks with her grandchildren. She always shared a coke and sugar cubes with them creating beautiful memories for each of them.
Treva was a wonderful cook and loved baking and cooking for the holidays. She was a thoughtful person and this showed through her desire to bake birthday cakes for family and friends.
Treva was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Smyers and Danny Boen; son, Lonnie Smyers and parents, Loyd and Bertha Deaton.

Obituary Preview: Doreatha Dean Key, 81, also known as “Granny” to her loved ones, passed away Wednesday May 18, 2022 at home in Brownfield, Tx surrounded by family. She left this earth to walk in the Heavenly Garden exactly 14 years to the day after her beloved Sammy passed.
Doreatha was born on June 14, 1940 to the late Woodrow and Loree May in Pittsburg, California. She moved with her family to Gomez, TX in 1950 where they farmed.
Doreatha attended high school at Brownfield High School where she participated in FHA, Choir and was on the library staff before graduating in 1958.
Doreatha married Sammy Key August 26, 1958 in Brownfield, TX; they were married 3 months shy of 50 years before his passing. They lived in Lubbock a couple years before, moving to Gomez and farming for Doreatha’s Dad for 14 years, finally laying down roots in Brownfield during 1970. Doreatha worked various jobs throughout the years such as Shook Tire, Key Tire, Jack Hamilton Tire & Bayless Jewelry before taking a job for AAI Foster- Grant in 1992 as a supervisor. She worked for them until she retired to take care of Sammy. Her hobbies included oil painting and collecting over 4000 Hot Wheels.
Doreatha had a servant heart expecting nothing in return, she loved everyone with a full heart and open arms, you always knew you were welcome and guaranteed a meal at Granny & Grandads house. She loved her family deeply and cherished her friendships. She leaves behind an abundance of beautiful memories and was an exemplar wife, mother, friend and “Granny”. Her legacy thrives though she will be deeply missed.
Doreatha is preceded in death by her parents, husband Sammy Key, granddaughter Nikki Cruz, son-in-law Ross Byrd, brother-in-law Gene Blake, Tress Key & sister-in-law “Jerry” Edwards.
Doreatha is survived by her daughter Robbie Byrd of Wichita Falls; two sons Russell Key, Ricky Key and wife Sherry all of Brownfield; 19 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren with 3 more on the way.
She is also survived by her Sister Doreen Kluck and her husband Dennis of Deer Lodge, MT; sister-in-law Glenna Cason and her husband Kenneth of Shallowater; Deanie Thomas and husband Tommy of Lubbock; brother-in-law Larry Blake and wife Linda of Arlington.
The family would thank Dr. Hord and Dr. Chebib along with Interim Hospice of Brownfield especially Sylvia & Jessica. Also, a heartwarming thanks to Rusty, Trina and April for tending to our dear Granny during this difficult stage in her life.

Margaret was born on July 16, 1928, in Frankfort, Kentucky. Her mother died a few months after her birth and she was raised by her grandmother.
Margaret married Loyd Allen on July 16, 1946, in Fort Worth. They moved to Levelland in 1959. Margaret was a housewife and secretary. She retired from South Plains College where she worked in the Science Department.
She was a member of the First Baptist and First Methodist Churches of Levelland and later a member of First Baptist Church in Meadow. Her love of the Lord was reflected in every aspect of her life. She was devoted to her family. She also loved music along with the history behind the music and artist.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Loyd, daughter Brenda, and son David. She is survived by daughter Paula Click, husband Mike, of Brownfield; granddaughters, Laura Campbell Tyler, husband Laudie, of Levelland, and Melanie Click Ridenour, husband Dr. Jim, of Brownfield; and great-granddaughter, Maggie Ridenour of Brownfield.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Tomas and Nancy Garcia and maternal grandfather Apolonio Vasquez.
Those left to cherish his memory are his parents Domingo and Leticia Olguin and Daniel and Irma Garcia. His 4 brothers Daniel Garcia, Abriam Ortega, Adrian Ortega and DJ Payen. His sisters Kaylie, Megan, Alyssa and Xian Garcia. His nephews Julius, Emilio and Ayden Gonzales and Jett and Jaxton Quintanilla. His nieces Nivea Gonzales and Olivia Garcia. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents Lupe and Estella Chavez and maternal grandmother Guadalupe Vasquez. Also numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ray was born on June 3, 1959, in Muldrow, Oklahoma to Elmer Ray Sellers and Mary Guinn Willis. He married Donna Stanley on June 16, 1979, in Quanah, Texas. Ray worked in the oil field for 44 years at Halliburton, Western, BJ Services, Baker Hughes, and QEP. In between times, he drove a truck for Jack B. Kelly and Goodpasture. Then he went to work for Llano. Ray enjoyed watching sports. He supported his kids and grandchildren in activities and sports that they participated in. Ray was actively involved in 4-H as a youth and as an adult project leader for his kids, niece and nephew, grandkids, and many other Terry County youth. He was involved in stock shows, shooting sports, public speaking, and record books. Following in his mother’s footsteps, Ray received the Gold Star Award, the highest award you can receive for 4-H participation. He challenged both of his sisters, his three children, and his niece and nephew to achieve the same accomplishment. 4-H, his family, and his friends molded Ray into the man he would become. Ray cared deeply about those around him and would check on how they were doing. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was always joking around and picked on those he cared about most.
Ray was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Novella Sellers; his maternal grandparents, William and Ruby Willis; his parents, Elmer and Mary Guinn Sellers; father and mother-in-law, Howard and Doris Stanley, and his brother-in-law, Shelby Duncan.

Obituary Preview: Hilton Ray Jackson passed away quietly on April 10, 2022 in Waxahachie, Texas after a performance at the Scarborough Renaissance Fair where he was a mainstay for over 30 years as “Sholo the Nubian.”
Hilton was born May 8th, 1956 in Taylor, Texas to Fred and Dorothy Jackson. Hilton was the third of six children, having two older brothers, a younger brother and two younger sisters. Hilton spent his younger years attending elementary school in Thrall, Texas, and later, after the family moved to West Texas in 1966, attended junior high at Union School until 1971. He later attended and graduated from Brownfield High School from 1971-1974.
After graduation, Hilton began a radio career with KKUB Radio Station, working for Jim and Lou Farr as a disc jockey. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, and also was a member of the local Community Action Committee.
Hilton moved to Houston, Texas in the late seventies and worked in the Houston area Warehouse District for several years. While in Houston, Hilton became active in several Renaissance festivals, not only in the Houston area, but also in Waxahachie and Austin, portraying the character “Sholo the Nubian” and drew thousands of fans to the festivals with that portrayal. He was a beloved fixture at the festivals for over thirty years and served on the Board of Directors for some of the Renaissance Festivals.
Hilton enjoyed the theater and dramatic readings, his friends, a good laugh, and in particular, a good argument. Hilton will be missed by many, but in particular by his family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Jackson; his brother, Fredrick Jackson; and his father, Fred Jackson. Hilton is survived by his brother Ralph (Tonya) of Grand Prairie, Texas; Scott (Jamie) of Brownfield, Texas; Diana of Brownfield, Texas; and Vanessa (Charlie) of New York, New York; his nieces Jessica Jackson of Lubbock, Jarys Boyd of Brownfield, Texas and nephews Jaxon Boyd of Canyon, Texas and Wesley and Reno Hayward of New York, New York.
