Marlene Weiss - September 01, 1940 - February 08, 2024

Departed: 02/08/2024 (Ft. Lauderdale)
Obituary Preview: Marlene Weiss passed away peacefully at her home in Ft. Lauderdale on February 8, surrounded by her beloved family. Marlene and her twin sister, Judy, were the only children of parents Morris and Sadie. After completing high school Marlene set out on her own to New York City, where she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and launched a career in modeling. Marlene later worked as the director of sales at Forman and Gunner's New York showrooms. While on vacation with her family in Miami, she met Bernard Weiss, a mathematician and meteorologist; the two fell in love and married. Bernie worked as a research meteorologist at Cambridge where the couple welcomed their three sons, Jeff, Scot, and Kurt. The young family enjoyed frequent road trips from New England to Cape Canaveral, where Bernie was conducting weather research. After a particularly cold New England winter, they decided to make a permanent move to Florida and settled in their home near the ocean in Ft. Lauderdale. While Bernie enjoyed an early retirement he also maintained their property. Marlene focused on a career in real estate while also raising their three boys. She was active in their schools, particularly when the oldest two became swimmers and when the youngest became active in his high school band. The house was always abuzz with international swimmers who lived temporarily with the family, relatives who had relocated, and the many friends they made while living in the area. Marlene was a beautiful hostess and entertainer and loved having people in her home or out by the pool, a place she often referred to as her “paradise.”
Throughout their marriage, the couple traveled frequently and all over the world but enjoyed time with family most of all. As a long-time member of the Rotary Club and the Garden Club, Marlene believed strongly in civic engagement and maintained an active social life. She loved playing and watching tennis and seldom missed a Miami Heat game. Her husband, Bernie, died in 2013, and Marlene did not remarry. Also predeceasing her was her twin sister, Judy. Marlene leaves behind her son Jeff and his wife Chris of Charlotte, North Carolina, and their daughters Victoria, Hannah, and Sadie; her son Scot of Orlando, and her son Kurt and his wife Amy of Ft. Lauderdale, and their daughters Jessica, Julia, and Katie. She was affectionately known as Mema to her grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. In addition, she is also survived by her nephews, Jay and Steven Weinstock, and Steven’s wife, Beatrice, who all lived nearby and cherished the time they had with her to the very end. Charlotte, her loyal and loving Papillion, who followed Marlene everywhere for the past 12 years is also left to mourn her memory.
Marlene’s legacy is one that is steeped in generosity, a love for life, and financial savvy; she was an incredibly generous and giving person who would acquire a gorgeous antique or piece of art simply to give it away to someone she loved. She could also be counted on to share straightforward and honest opinions, whether it was about politics, relationships, or current events. But her words always came from a place of love, concern, and care for others. For her many family and friends, she will be greatly missed, and the world will be just a little less bright without her presence.
The friends and family of Marlene Weiss are invited to attend the funeral service to be held at the South Florida National Cemetery located at 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida 33449 on Friday, February 16th Please arrive at 10:00 A.M. in lane one.
