William E. Hurteau - August 25, 1937 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Raymond)
Obituary Preview: FREMONT, N.H. – William E. Hurteau, better known by his family and friends as “Shorty,” passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2024, at the Elliot Hospital of natural causes.
Born on Aug. 25, 1937, in Epping, N.H., Shorty was the son of the late George T. Hurteau Sr. and Ellen Josie (Twombly) Hurteau.
Shorty lived a long adventurous life of 86 years and possessed a daredevil spirit – a trait that began in his early 20s and led him to the rodeo arena where he showed in the Saddle Bronc competition and was told by many competitors that he should consider going into professional competition. But tamed (well sort of) in his mid-20s, he married Catherine Currier (his first wife) and they resided in Chester, N.H., where he began a career as a heavy equipment operator. Together, they had two children, daughter Billie Jo Schreiber and son Rickey Hurteau.
Shorty later began a new chapter in his life when he was re-acquainted with a neighbor from Chester, Joanne Hanson Gonzales. After some years together, Shorty and Joanne decided to make it official and they married on Feb. 4, 1995. After too many years living at a condo in Manchester, they moved to the small town of Fremont, N.H.
His most prized possession was his turquoise blue 1966 Ford Thunderbird with a 390 engine, which was meticulously restored by his son-in-law, Eric. Shorty then hit the classic car show circuit with his wife, Joanne, traveling from New York To Maine as he and his younger brother, Paul Hurteau, were members of the Kustom Kings Car Club. Shorty’s T-bird, with that “can’t take your eyes off" turquoise blue color, quickly became a showstopper, winning top awards at nearly every classic car show they attended.
Shorty will be forever loved by his wife of nearly 30 Years, Joanne Hurteau of Chester, N.H.; his daughter, Billie Jo, and husband, Eric of Raymond, N.H., and their miniature dachshund “Snoopy” aka “Grampa’s Little Buddy” – whom he loved more than anyone could ever imagine; and his son, Rickey, and his wife, Debara Hurteau, of Hooksett, N.H.
Shorty will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren; Nathan Hurteau and his wife Jenna of Derry, N.H., Jackie Hurteau and her fiancé, Nathan Dubia of Franklin, N.H. and Jessica Hurteau of Hooksett, N.H. Also, his brother Paul Hurteau of Epping, N.H., and his son, Paul Hurteau Jr., and his wife, Alison, his brother John Hurteau Sr. and his wife, Myrtle, of Epping, N.H., and their son, Mike Hurteau.
Shorty's spouse Joanne's children, Glenn Gonzales and wife, Tracey, of Chester, N.H.; Anthony Gonzales and fiancé Melody, and his son, Daniel Gonzales; Daren Gonzales and his son, Ian Gonzales; Michael Gonzales and his three children, Nancy Snell and her children and many great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his older brothers, George Hurteau, Jr., Thomas Hurteau Sr., and Alfred Hurteau; and nephew John Hurteau Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at the Sleeper Cemetery on Martin Road in Fremont, N.H., followed by a Celebration of Life at the home of Eric and Billie Jo Schreiber, 22 Ventura Drive, Raymond, N.H., featuring Shorty’s favorite food from the Deerfield Fair: Sam, Joe & Ed’s sausage subs with peppers and onions along with their pepper and onion steak subs. You can try searching online archives, contacting local libraries or genealogical societies, or reaching out to family members who may have kept copies of the obituary.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages can be a beautiful way to celebrate someone's life and provide a space for others to share memories and condolences.
