Judy Ann Mortimer - January 23, 1947 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Brooksville)
Obituary Preview: Judy was born on January 23, 1947 in Dover, New Jersey. She is the youngest of three, her identical twin sister, Janie, and the oldest, Joyce. Judy attended Dover High School and was a member of the Drill Team, graduating in June of 1965. Following graduation, she went to work for Hewlett Packard where she met the love of her life, Frederick Johnson Mortimer, in the mail room, of all places. Fred & Judy were engaged on Christmas Eve in 1966 and married on June 24, 1967.
Judy & Fred had the love of a lifetime and spent 56 years together. They started their life in New Jersey, where all three of their children were born. Frederick John Mortimer (Freddie) born June 25, 1968. Catherine Ann Buonemani (Cathy) born June 13, 1972. Robyn Lee Kanis born September 10, 1977. The family moved to Dunedin, Florida in 1981. Judy & Fred had the pleasure of seeing all three of their children marry and were present for four of their grandchildren’s births. Tyler Francis Mortimer born on October 19, 1994. Peyton Micheal Kanis born on November 15, 2002. Jake Anthony Buonemani born on July 4, 2003. Linken John  Kanis born on November 2, 2010. Felecia Gayle Kanis born on September 24, 1995 became their bonus grandchild with the union of Robyn and Steve on March 31, 2001. Felecia blessed Fred and Judy with their first great grandchild Ezra Michael Kanis on September 17, 2015.
In High School, a guidance counselor made the horrible mistake of telling Judy she wasn’t college material. For years, she let this hold her back from furthering her education. In 1994 Freddie gifted Judy a class at St. Petersburg College. Her sister, Janie, had already been taking college courses, and Robyn had also just started taking classes. That was all it took. In 2001, seven years later at the age of 54, both Judy and Janie graduated with their Associates in Science.
Judy had an undeniable work ethic, which was instilled in each of her children. She worked for Hewlett Packard until she had Freddie. Judy remained a stay-at-home mom until the family moved to Florida. She re-entered the workforce once the family was settled in their new home working for various construction related companies including Kimely Horn, Gannet-Flemming, York Bridge Concepts, Creative Contractors, and ELB Consulting.
Judy was always supportive of her children and grandchildren’s sporting activities. There was football and track meets for Freddie and countless gymnastics meets for Cathy and Robyn. After gymnastics, Cathy pursued competitive cheerleading, Robyn twirled baton and played softball, Judy & Fred were in the stands for each competition and game. As the grandkids took up sports Judy enjoyed watching them. From soccer to football to band, all five grandkids could count on Mom-Mom to be there to support them.
Judy and Fred enjoyed traveling. In 1986, they took the family out to Las Vegas, then on to California. They looked forward to their grandkids ‘graduating’ 8th grade and took each one on a trip of their choosing. These trips included visiting Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, New York City, Lancaster County and Hershey, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and the Kennedy Space Center. Judy and Fred enjoyed traveling to see their son, Freddie, in Anchorage, Alaska where they went salmon fishing. Judy out-fishing everyone and catching the most salmon as well as the largest. Judy and Fred also traveled to other various locations over the years including Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, and Arizona.
Cathy & Robyn have fond memories of the girl’s weekends they did with Judy. At least annually, the 3 girls would plan a weekend get together. Sometimes the daughters would converge on mom’s house just to watch movies and eat junk food. Other times, they would spend the weekend in Orlando, Panama City Beach, or Tallahassee to Christmas shop, eat junk food, and watch whatever chick-flick was in movies.
Occasionally a game of rummy or triple solitaire would break out. On one such weekend, try as they could, they could never win the triple solitaire. Finally, Cathy suggested everyone count their deck of cards. Years later, we all still laugh about how we discovered mom wasn’t ‘playing with a full deck’. Judy took great pleasure in watching the sunsets and the many colors the sky would take. She loved thunderstorms and watching the lightening dance through the clouds and across the sky. She loved flowers always announcing when her various plants were flowering. Judy enjoyed reading, specifically biographies and autobiographies. She had dreams of writing and one year surprised her family with her autobiography for Christmas. Many people don’t know that Judy had a talent for drawing and painting. Judy had a passion for sewing. Once retired, she focused her time on quilting. She’d make table runners, Christmas tree skirts, placemats, and potholders. Most Sundays, Judy would help Robyn with her quilting projects. She took her talent for drawing and combined it with her love for quilting. She gifted each of her children a quilted wall-hanging reproduction of their homes. One of her proudest creations was a custom wall-hanging she made for a Parrotheads of Tampa Bay fundraiser last year, recreating the fundraiser logo into a wall-hanging. The quilt was placed in a silent auction and the winner paid a whopping $475 for it!!
Judy had a quiet strength. She never looked to be the ‘star’. She didn’t command attention. She didn’t boast about her accomplishments and talents. Instead, she was content to take the ‘supporting’ role. She supported her husband and helped his dreams and ideas become realities. She uplifted her children, offering guidance and advice whenever asked, but not forcing her opinion. She supported her employers, always striving to do her best to alleviate the workloads of those she worked for. Judy had several back surgeries over the years and survived breast cancer in 1999. In 2019, she was diagnosed with cancer in her plasma cells, called multiple myeloma. Judy underwent a stem-cell transplant and chemotherapy in 2020 as part of the treatment for the multiple myeloma, which caused her to lose her hair. Last year, a small tumor was found in her lung and she endured radiation treatment. Through all these ailments, discomfort and pain, not one complaint did she utter.
Last year, Fred fell and broke his hip. While in the ER awaiting treatment, Fred did what Fred did – he started telling any of the staff who would listen all about our family. He started to talk about Judy and all  her back surgeries. Embarrassed, his youngest daughter admonished him to stop sharing so much. Fred looked at Robyn and said, “Why? I can’t help it. She’s my hero.” I think that sums it up. Judy was many things. She was a daughter, a sister, and an aunt. She was a wife to her husband, a mom to her kids, and Mom-Mom to her grandkids. But ultimately, she truly was and will always be our hero.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024. Time and Location will be forthcoming.

favorite role was being Gamma-Reet to her grands.
Her unwavering love and dedication to her family is a legacy that will live on in all of our hearts, and whenever you spot a Flamingo, if you don’t already, please think of her.

In her youth, Jeri grew up first in Royal Oak, Michigan and then with the foster family of JB and Myrtle Smith at Hardy, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains. It was here that she gained her love of nature, animals, and the environment. She was an avid gardener and enthusiast botanist with hundreds of plants, many of which were propagated from clippings or started from seeds. She was an advocate for the protection and rescue of animals of all types, domestic and wild, but was particularly interested in the preservation of birds of all species, manatees, and the Monarch butterfly. One of the hobbies she enjoyed the most in her retirement was maintaining a milkweed garden and habitat so the butterflies could live safely and peacefully around her home. She had a dog and four cats (2 which she adopted, 2 which adopted her), all of which still have a wonderful home with her husband.
She is survived by a large, loving group of family members and friends including Roger Cody Goodman (husband), Matthew Treleven (son), Jeremy and Kat Treleven (son and daughter-in-law), Zoey Treleven, Ava Treleven, and Brayden Sparks (grandchildren), Rebecca and James Kochenour (stepdaughter and son-in-law), Cassidy and Connor Kochenour (grandchildren), Catie and Anthony Hanlin (granddaughter and her husband), Myles and Alivia Hanlin (great grandchildren), Angie Goodman (stepdaughter), Clay Goodman (stepson), and Joann Artega (best friend). She also has a large extended family with nieces, nephews, and friends that she loved deeply and passionately.
Jeri wished to be remembered as simply as she lived. While only thoughts and memories are encouraged, the family is asking for any material remembrances be made in her name to the local ASPCA, animal shelter, or conservation group of your choice.
