George William Spruk - August 08, 1931 - March 05, 2022

Departed: 03/05/2022 (Pittsburg)
Obituary Preview: George William Spruk, 90, of Pittsburg passed away March 5, 2022. He was born August 8, 1931 in Pittsburg to Freda (née Wahl) and Frank Spruk and grew up with his great aunt and uncle, Bertie (née Moats) and Jess Allred. His defining character traits of honesty, integrity, perfectionism and hard work were evident to all who knew him. He was a grand storyteller. He once said he considered himself somewhat of a homebody. Wherever he roamed in life, he was always happiest when back at his 10-acre place in Pittsburg. George grew up enjoying nature by fishing, hunting, discovering arrowheads and trapping mink, beaver and muskrats. As a teenager, he was awarded the National Top Pelt Award for five consecutive years in a competition run by the Sears Roebuck Co.
George attended Eugene Field primary school, Roosevelt Jr. High and then graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1949. In 1948 and again in 1949 he earned Gold Medals at the Kansas State High School Music competitions for his outstanding cornet trumpet performances. During that time, he was often chosen to play taps at local veteran funerals. George went into the Army as a Private First Class in the 835th Engineer Aviation Battalion in 1950 and served at the base in Mineral Wells, Texas. This was the beginning of his service to his country that would span the course of his life, later working for the US Department of Agriculture and the Federal Internal Revenue Service. All together he had a total of 31 years government service. When he was honorably discharged from the Army, he appreciated the benefits of a veteran by using the GI Bill to complete in 1955 his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from then Kansas State Teacher’s College, now Pittsburg State University. George married his love, Sylvia Ann Silvia, in May of 1951. Together they lived in Mineral Wells, Texas, Pierre, South Dakota, Topeka, Kansas and Grand Island, Nebraska, but they always moved back to Pittsburg. Camping trips in tents and trailers throughout the West took them to admire nature in our country’s National and State Parks: Yellowstone, Glacier, Rocky Mountain, and camping parks in New Mexico. George and Sylvia spent many retirement hours at Queen Wilhelmina Lodge in Arkansas enjoying the big fireplace in the main lobby and watching the beautiful sunsets viewed from there.
Love of animals was a constant in George’s life. Pictures of his favorite calves Brownie and Blackie and his childhood dog, Mitzie would bring a smile. The Spruk family dog, Freckles, was a favorite pet along with a string of Miniature Schnauzers he and Syl loved to the end: Gretta, Knoedel and Wilhelmina. In 1988 George retired from the IRS and was awarded the National Gallatin Award from the U.S. Treasury Department. In this very elite award given to him by then Secretary of Treasury, James Baker, George was cited as having earned the “high esteem” of his country for his “fine contributions made to public service.” He was very proud of this award. Retirement gave George the opportunity to build a beautiful pecan orchard on his home acreage. In 1982, he and his family planted 100 pecan tree saplings. He was a self-taught grafter of these native trees resulting in delicious crops of many varieties of pecans. Grafting trees is an art form as well as a science. George became very adept at this second profession and grafted trees for several people in Southeast Kansas as well as at his son-in-law’s family farm in Missouri. Family gatherings for fall harvests of pecans became a tradition. His son, Dan, and son-in-law Brad, helped him keep the orchard mowed and in pristine condition. In 1998 George was elected Treasurer of the Kansas Nut Growers Association.
George is survived by his three children: Nancy (Spruk) Radell and her husband Brad of Pittsburg, Dan Spruk of Pomme de Terre, Missouri and Debby (Spruk) Carpenter and her husband Jamie of St. Louis, Missouri. He was Papa, grandfather, of Sarah (Radell) Schiefelbein and her husband Eric and their children Katelyn, Von and Dylan, Katie Carpenter and Angie (Carpenter) Dent and her husband Adam and their daughter, Addison Mae. He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia, his great aunt and uncle, and his grandson Eric Radell.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the Mt. Olive Cemetery with Pastor Tom Wehrman residing. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olive Abbey. Friends may call at the Brenner Mortuary from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Tuesday to sign the register book. The family suggests memorials to the St. John Lutheran Church. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.

Martha A. Strasser - May 10, 1936 - March 05, 2022

Departed: 03/05/2022 (Pittsburg)
Obituary Preview: Martha Ann Titus was born May 10, 1936. Many years later when she needed her birth certificate, she found out she was born Martha Jane Titus on May 11, 1936 (she took advantage of that) to Lydia and Carter Titus in St. Paul, Kansas. She married her high school sweetheart, Gene Strasser, from the wrong side of the tracks on February 16, 1955. They began their life moving around following Gene in the service until they finally settled in Pittsburg, Ks. Six children soon followed as Martha and Gene were devout Catholics and lifelong members of Our Lady of Lourdes parish. Somehow, she managed to keep everyone happy and healthy while making each of her kids feel special as well as found time to listen to thousands of Geno's songs (not necessarily by choice).
Once the kids were old enough to fend for themselves, Martha sprang free and went to work. She landed her dream job in fabrics at Wal-Mart. Her personality and craft/sew skills blossomed. She made many friends and enjoyed her job. She would make outfits or crafts to be displayed in the store. She also made numerous bridesmaids dresses, too numerous to count Halloween costumes, and her own clothes. She could whip out an outfit in an evening or mend anything put in front of her. On Sunday (after mass) it was a family tradition to stop by the house for Martha's breakfast. All you can eat and everyone welcome. If you left hungry it was your own fault. There were also the specialty dishes she made to lure us over for dinner. Martha finally retired from Wal-Mart after many years and went to work at St. Mary's cafeteria as a "lunch lady" (and yes they still made those fabulous cinnamon rolls). Again she made many friends and enjoyed her work. Martha also liked to walk, tried her hand at golf and was even on a bowling team at one time. Martha retired again and this time her and Gene enjoyed a quiet life (besides Geno's music) in the house on Euclid. Gene passed in April 2014. Martha stayed at the house for several years with her little dog until dementia took her mind and she needed some assistance (not if you asked her though). The boys tried to keep her at their home but that proved too much and she moved to Via Christi Village. The staff took great care of her until God called her home March 5, 2022. She will be joining the love of her life Gene, daughter Julie and a grandson TJ as well as her siblings and parents that have already passed.
She leaves behind son Jeff (Kathy) and grandson Jeremy; daughter Vicki (Henry); son Mark; son Tim with grandchildren Zach and Kate; son Shawn (Dawn) with grandchildren Cooper and Abby; and several great grandchildren. You may have felt a breeze early Saturday morning as Martha's soul flew by in a beeline to heaven. No detours for this sweet lady. She will be missed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2022, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pittsburg, KS, with Father Jerome Spexarth as Celebrant. Private Family Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, at Brenner Mortuary. The family will receive friends following the Rosary until 7:30 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association. These may be left at the church or mailed to Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may also leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and share memories.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, ranging from 100 to 500 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer or more detailed obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and provide a visual representation of the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They'll provide guidance on their specific requirements, including word count, formatting, and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper publication. Online platforms may offer more affordable options or even free listings.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. You can store the document with your important papers or share it with your loved ones.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites. Many libraries also maintain archives of local newspapers that can be searched in person or through interlibrary loan programs. Additionally, you can try contacting the funeral home that handled the services for assistance.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow for corrections or updates. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary provides more detail about the person's life and is typically longer and more narrative in style.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some personality and humor into the writing. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the notice more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or conflicts within the family, it's essential to approach the writing process with care and tact. Consider consulting with multiple family members or a mediator to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the final product.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or interests to make the notice more personal and touching.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be a challenging task. If you're feeling overwhelmed, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home or professional obituary writer.

Can I publish an obituary in multiple places?

Yes! You can publish an obituary in multiple newspapers, online platforms, or social media sites. This can help reach a wider audience and ensure that all who knew the person are informed of their passing.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an online obituary varies depending on the platform. Some sites may publish immediately after submission, while others may require review and approval before going live.

Can I create a memorial webpage instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms offer tools to create memorial webpages that allow you to share memories, photos, and stories about the deceased. These pages can remain active for years to come and serve as a digital tribute.

What if I need to make corrections to an online obituary?

If you need to make corrections to an online obituary, contact the platform's customer support team directly. They'll guide you through the process of making updates or corrections.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to include details about the charity and how donations can be made.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respected after they pass away?

Talk to your loved one about their online presence before they pass away. Make sure you have access to their accounts and understand their wishes regarding social media profiles and other digital assets.

What if I'm dealing with complex family dynamics during this time?

Losing a loved one can bring up complex emotions and conflicts within families. Be patient and understanding with each other as you navigate this difficult time. Consider seeking support from a grief counselor or mediator if needed.
