Departed: 04/26/2021 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: EWER, Richard Duane "Dick" 3/14/1948 - 4/26/2021
Richard “Dick” Duane Ewer was born to Duane and Clara Mae Ewer on March 14, 1948 in Kearney, NE. He grew up in Curtis, NE until he was a sophomore in high school. At that time, his family moved to Aberdeen, SD because of his Dad’s job. After high school, Dick met Donna Hedges at a community dance. Dick and Donna were married December 27, 1970 and moved to Council Bluffs, IA where their oldest son Darin was born. Dick soon got a job at Control Data in Omaha. After a few short years they built a home in Springfield, NE where Deric, Danny, and Darci were born and still live today.
Dick was an outdoorsman and spent many hours hunting with his boys. While the kids were growing up the family spent weekends at the Louisville Gun Club camping and fishing, and taking trips back to Aberdeen for holidays. He loved coaching and watching his kids in their sports and activities and continued with his grandkids. Dick was always a jokester and thrived on making people laugh. He was an avid Husker fan being a football season ticket holder always heading to Lincoln before the crowd. He worked hard finding opportunities to get autographs from any Husker player or coach.
In February 2010, Dick retired from Yellow Freight. He spent a lot of his time gardening, splitting wood and he enjoyed being a grandpa. Dick and Donna loved spending time together going for drives and being available for their kids and grandkids. Jerome M. "Jerry" Essington - October 11, 1937 - April 11, 2021

Departed: 04/11/2021 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Essington, Jerome M. “Jerry”
Jerry is finally at rest in “God’s Country,” which coincidentally was also his nickname for his hometown of Keyesport, Illinois. Jerry’s athleticism was obvious throughout his life. As a letter winner at Carlyle High School in basketball, baseball, and track, these talents lead him to McKendree College. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a Water Supply Specialist. His six-year service included both active and reserve duty, 18 months stationed in Germany, and continued success in multiple sports. Not only did he create cherished friendships, but he also achieved a rank of Specialist 4 upon his Honorable Discharge.
After attending Illinois State University, Jerry began a 30-year career with General Telephone Company. True to his nature, his “retirement“ included nine years working for the Washington Parks District, other outdoor endeavors, and time devoted to his grandchildren. As a parent, he coached his son, Jay’s, baseball team for nearly a decade and religiously attended all his children’s activities. His grandson, Lee, also benefited from his grandpa’s expertise as an assistant coach for his baseball team. It was rare to find Jerry dressed in anything other than Cardinals, Royals, Huskers or gear advertising one of his grandchildren’s various sports teams, as his favorite activity was watching his “kids” compete.
Jerry’s lifelong passion for hunting whitetail and mule deer, antelope, turkey, and quail remains evident in his stories, pictures, mounts, and impressive collection of rifles and bows. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Eastern Nebraska Gun Club, the American Legion in Beckemeyer, Illinois, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Jerry’s legacy of honest work, high expectations, and devotion to family is treasured. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dedicated father, supportive grandparent, loyal friend, and sports enthusiast to all.
Jerry is preceded in death by his son, Dr. Jay Matthew Essington; parents, Walter and Rosella Essington; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Neal and Polly Essington.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen (Landon) Essington; daughters, Tam Ellen (Erik) Korshoj of Omaha, NE, Terri Elizabeth Essington of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law, Dr. Carolyn Essington of Brick, NJ; granddaughters, Tara Ellen Korshoj of Omaha, NE, Hannah Marie Daniels of Brick, NJ; grandsons, Dr. Lee Erik Korshoj (Kelsey) of Omaha, NE, Dr. Matthew Jay Essington (Tara) of Wahoo, NE, Dr. Nicholas Jerome Essington of Beachwood, NJ.
Memorials to be directed to the family. They will be forwarded to the Brookestone Village and the McKendree Chapel in Illinois for special projects in Jerry's name.

Mabel "Mae" Heger - November 15, 1929 - March 02, 2021

Departed: 03/02/2021 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: HEGER, Mabel E. “Mae” 11/15/1929 – 3/2/2021
Mabel Edith (Mae) Heger was born November 15, 1929 in the family farmhouse of Walter and Harriet Neuhaus in rural Bennington. She had one older brother, Robert. Her parents, brother, and her husband, Deryle, all preceded her in death. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran church in rural Bennington. Mae graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1946. Upon graduation, she worked at Mutual of Omaha. She lived in a boarding house on 48th & Harney with ten other gals during the week to be closer to work. She met the love of her life when she was 15. Deryle was picking up milk from her families’ dairy farm and after a while she was riding the milk route with him. They married on January 1st, 1950. Deryle and Mae had a very strong and loving marriage up until the very end. To this union, they were blessed with six children: Marilee, Terry, Bob, Bill, Lori and Patti. Mae had a loving relationship with each of her children.
Mae worked along-side Deryle on the farm and taught their children to do the same. She often would tell people that her knees got bad from carrying heavy five-gallon buckets of feed to the livestock. She also was always cleaning the house and mopping the floors. So much in fact that Dad always teased her that she would be buried with a dust rag in her hand. Over the years Mae canned hundreds of jars of her Crystal Chip pickles and tons of bags of sweet corn for the freezer. A favorite memory of Patti and Lori’s is how fun it was to chase after the chickens once Mae butchered them by cutting off the chickens’ heads. All the girls helped in that process by either plucking the feathers from the chickens or collecting eggs. Often the chickens and the eggs were sold to people in Millard. Mae always made birthdays special with a family dinner that usually included her homemade chicken salad. Having a large family is a lot of work; especially with six kids and a diabetic husband but Mae learned to handle it all. She was up early every morning making three meals a day plus lunches (often run food to the field) along with running any home/farm errands and chores. On Sundays, she did all of that plus get all of us kids and herself ready for church and then quickly came back home to make a large Sunday meal and have it on the table promptly by noon.
Besides helping on the farm, Mae held several jobs throughout her life including working at Brandeis in downtown Omaha, Virgie’s Dress Shop, Richman Gordmans, the drapery department at Sears and as a cook at Millard North Middle School. Her last job was at DTN with her daughter Patti. There Mae honed her computer skills sending second notices to past due subscribers. Mae thrived during that time and found her voice. She retired from DTN in 1992 by taking a stand that it was not right that she be denied a raise just because she was part-time. It was also during this time that she started volunteering at the Sarpy County Election board during elections.
Mae enjoyed creating the Thanksgiving display at her church, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Millard. She also always helped with the families’ Millard Days “farm” float. Mae also was co-leader of the Millard Misses 4-H club for a while when Patti and Lori were members. She loved Bingo! She would drive herself to the Millard Social Hall to play Bingo. Dad did not think much of it, but sure liked it when she won! In later years, the girls took her to play bingo at various places nearby; often including their own friends in the fun. Terry and Patti took Mom to Las Vegas on her birthday for several years so Mom could play the slot machines. Once Mom was in the memory care facilities, her favorite past time was still Bingo.
Mae was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007. At first, the family knew but Mae didn’t which they felt was a blessing. When a doctor told Mae then things changed. Knowing she had the disease took the wind out of her sails, so to speak. We all learned to not say “Mom, you already told me that.” We just listened and answered her questions again and again and again. But that is life with Alzheimer’s. When Dad was still living, he was grateful that he could get a break from it by going outside to his shop. Mom loved everything about farm life; especially gater rides with Deryle; after his passing was still able to enjoy them with her son Bill. Mom stayed on the farm for several years after Dad’s passing with the help of the family. The farm was always busy, but Bob would often come into the house to check on Mom and tease her about anything to lighten the day. After a while though, it was in her best interest to be moved to a memory facility. Mae resided at Hillcrest Memory Care in Gretna for a year and a half and then moved to Legato Living on New Year’s Eve in 2019 where she resided until her death. Everyone at both facilities learned to love her as she was often their favorite. During the last year or so, Patti would call her siblings while visiting Mom so they could talk. We always tried to end the calls with Mom saying I love you so very much.
Mae is survived by her children, Marilee Polacek, Terry Scigo, Bob Heger, Bill Heger Lori Heger and her husband Ed Conant and Patti Dunaway and her husband Scott. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ben/Anne Polacek, Jon Polacek, Kate Polacek, Jenne Scigo/Pohl Longsine, Matthew/Joyce Scigo, Stephen/Ashley Scigo, Jackie Heger, Beau Heger and two step-grandchildren Scott Dunaway Jr and Amber/Jeff Bare. Mae’s family also includes great grandchildren Henry Longsine, Luna and Sonja Scigo, Elisabeth Polacek, Mila Scigo as well as four step-great grandchildren Damian and Anthony Erikson, Landyn and Savanah Dunaway. Dorothy Louise Gustafson - July 14, 1924 - February 28, 2021

Departed: 02/28/2021 (Omaha)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Louise Johnson was born on July 14,1924, in Stromsburg, Nebraska, to Charles S.F. Johnson & Minnie Louise (Swanberg) Johnson. She grew up on the farm with her two younger brothers, Carl and Richard. Dorothy often said how grateful she was to be raised in a happy, loving, Christian home. Speaking only Swedish, she went to the one room country school near their farm as the only child in her grade! Her mother was her first piano teacher, which began her life-long love of music. After graduating 8th grade, she attended Stromsburg High School. Dorothy was a good student, but also had a lot of fun, in fact, she was a lunchtime ping pong champion. Upon completing high school she moved to Moline, Illinois, to work as an executive secretary. She met and made special friends during this time, and had her fill of “all you can eat spaghetti” dinners for a quarter! Eventually there was an opening in Dr. Anderson’s Stromsburg office, Dorothy got the job and became his office-trained “nurse.” She was glad she did, as this was where she and Doyle met. He pursued her for 3 years, and they were married on September 2nd, 1950. Moving to Lincoln, Dorothy secured a position at another doctor’s office while they both worked on their degrees; Doyle, his D.D.S., and Dorothy, her P.H.T. (Put Husband Through). They started a family before they finished those degrees!
After graduation, they moved to Omaha where they began their dental practice and eventually completed their family. Dorothy worked alongside Doyle as a receptionist and dental assistant in the early years. All through his career, Dorothy partnered with Doyle doing book-keeping, pay-roll, office interior design and whatever was needed. She also had a gift of making office staff feel supported and appreciated through personal touches and holiday celebrations. All of this while expertly managing family, hearth and home. They raised their five children, attended and served at their churches, Bethany Baptist and most recently Christ Community Church. Dorothy was willing to serve in many capacities; Sunday school teacher, organist, choir member, deaconess, and various other ministries, etc. Dorothy was a devoted wife to her best friend, Doyle, a compassionate and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a dear sister, sister-in-law and aunt, and a good friend to many. Dorothy had a heart for the Lord, and this love for Him was most exceptionally modeled to others through her gift of warm hospitality! Dorothy Louise Gustafson went home to be with her Savior on February 28th, 2021. She will be missed by her five children: Daniel Gustafson (Jennifer) of Omaha, NE; Christine Butler (John) of Springfield, MO; Becky Kerns (Steve) of Houston, TX; Deborah Carlson (Paul) of Richfield, MN; and Elise Pavelka (Lee) of Wichita, KS. Thirteen grandchildren: Amanda (Kody) Unstad, Abby (Marcus) Pospisil, Eric (Amber) Gustafson, Ellie Butler, Marshall (Dakota) Kerns, Matthew (Sarah) Kerns, Hannah (Nathan) Holm, Sam Carlson, Emma Carlson, Caleb Carlson, Grace (Will) Stern, Megan Pavelka, Emily Pavelka and thirteen great grandchildren. Brothers: Carl Johnson (Lottie) and Richard Johnson (Nancy) both of Stromsburg, NE, and special cousins Annette Lindberg and Donna Bergman, and many loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and dear husband Doyle D. Gustafson,
of almost 67 years.
