Anna Mae Bowling - September 23, 1945 - April 08, 2022

Departed: 04/08/2022 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: Anna Mae Bowling, age 76, passed away peacefully at her residence in Green Camp, Ohio, Friday, April 8, 2022. She was born September 23, 1945 in Marion, Ohio to Edgar and Lessie (Blanton) Briggs.
She was proud to be in the first graduating class of Elgin High School in 1963. She was a member of the Green Camp United Methodist Church for over 30 years.
If there was one thing Anna Mae was best known for, it was her crocheting. When traveling, she never went far without her crochet bag in case she had to wait. She easily went through thousands of skeins of yarn making afghans for baby showers and gifts for people in the hospital. She gave her creations away and would not accept payment for her work. Many of her blankets were also donated in support of local fundraising projects. She was thrilled to pass along her talent to her eldest granddaughters and loved receiving the gifts they made for her.
Anna Mae enjoyed gardening in her flower bed and was always excited to show off when new blooms came. She loved to talk about all her flowers, especially her morning glories. Her gardening skills weren’t just limited to flowers. She also had a green thumb when it came to vegetables. Her daughters fondly remember spending hours helping her plant, tend, and harvest the produce from their enormous garden. In her later years, she downsized to only a few tomato plants. Though she couldn’t eat the tomatoes, she wanted to make sure she grew something she knew her grandchildren loved to eat.
Music was another thing that brought joy to Anna Mae’s life, and the only things you’d ever catch her listening to were either traditional gospel music, or the local radio station that played nothing but the classics from the ‘50s and ’60s.
For nearly the last 30 years, Anna Mae had dedicated her love to the care of her first grandchild, Timothy LaVenia, who was born with Down Syndrome and other medical issues.  Anna Mae and Tim rarely missed church on Sundays and volunteered to be greeters whenever the opportunity arose.  Anna Mae has deeply and dearly missed Tim since his passing in August 2020.
Anna Mae was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Rose Mary Bowden. She is survived by her siblings Alfred Briggs, Debra Black, Ella Gearhart, and Dorothy Carroll. She is also survived by her daughters Tammy (Bowling) LaVenia Turner and Tina (Bowling) Spurlock, and six grandchildren: Angelina, Alexis, Ariel, Caleb, Aaliyah , and Amara Spurlock.
No calling hours will be held for Anna Mae. A graveside service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Chapel Heights Memorial Gardens. Those wishing to be part of the processional to the cemetery are asked to meet between noon and 12:30 p.m. at Boyd Funeral Home. Pastor Carl Redding will officiate the service.

Obituary Preview: Belvia “Bev” Holloway, age 97, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on March 18, 2022 at Fairhaven.
On October 7, 1924, Bev was born in Marion, Ohio to the late Fred and Myrtle Osborne. She married the love of her life, Willis “Bill” Holloway, April 27, 1941. They shared fifty-three years of marriage and raised four children: Patricia “Trish”, Sharon “Shari”, Dena, and William “Bill”.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share details about their life and accomplishments, and offer a sense of closure for those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or tributes in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it's being published on. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details, aiming for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may have specific requirements for format, length, and content. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and proofread carefully before submitting.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and to leave a lasting legacy. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides additional context and stories about the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a printed obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication's schedule and workflow. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

DON'T WORRY! Many funeral homes offer assistance with writing and submitting obituaries. You can also hire a professional obituary writer or ask a trusted friend or family member for help.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's life and personality. Just be sure to keep it tasteful and respectful.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or conflicts surrounding the person's death or life, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit that information or focus on more positive aspects.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! This is a thoughtful way to honor the person's memory while also supporting a good cause. Be sure to include specific details about the charity and how donations can be made.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

MOST online platforms provide easy sharing options for social media. You can also copy and paste the link into your own social media posts or emails.

This varies depending on the platform. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform for their policies.

Can I include video or audio elements in an online obituary?

SOME online platforms allow multimedia elements like videos or audio clips. This can be a powerful way to tell the person's story and share memories.

What if I need help finding information for an obituary?

You can reach out to family members, friends, or former colleagues for assistance gathering information. You can also try searching online archives or public records.
