Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to attend the funeral or memorial service, send condolences, and offer support to the grieving family.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes often provide guidance and assistance in writing an obituary, and some may even offer to write it on behalf of the family.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or organizations that the family would like to support in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or personal websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line. It's best to check with the publication or platform directly for pricing information.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to edit or update the obituary at any time.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and its deadlines. Online platforms often allow for immediate publication, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks to publish.

Can I write my own obituary?

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Absolutely! Including details about memorial services, celebrations of life, or other tributes can help ensure that friends and family know how to participate and pay their respects.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. You might instead mention that a private ceremony will be held or that memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers.

Can I include information about charitable donations?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to include details about the charity and how donations can be made.

How do I ensure that my loved one's story is told accurately?

To ensure accuracy, gather information from multiple sources and fact-check details before submitting the obituary. You might also consider asking friends or family members to review the draft before publication.

What if I'm not comfortable writing about my loved one's struggles or challenges?

You don't have to include sensitive information about your loved one's struggles or challenges unless you feel it's important for their story. Focus on celebrating their strengths, achievements, and positive qualities instead.

Can I include information about pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! If pets were important companions in your loved one's life, consider mentioning them in the obituary as a way to acknowledge their significance.
