Sarah was born in Centertown, Kentucky on January 30, 1940, to the late Lonnie Whitehead and Virginia (Snodgrass) Whitehead, being 1 of 6 children.

Along with her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harlon Eugene Ward; sister, Barbara (Ronnie Joe) Masters and Brother Ralph Whitehead.

Left to cherish the memory of Sarah are her sons, Kenneth (Lois) Ward and Anthony Gene Ward; grandchildren Rebekah Smith, Jasmine (Deontae) King, Megan (Matthew) Cates, Mackenzie (Stanley) Laity, and Anthony (Kara Marsh) Ward Jr; great-grandchildren, Maliki Smith, Wyatt and Maverick; siblings, Barry (Mary Ann) Whitehead, Charlotte (Sonnie) Cowgill and Gloria Herndon and many nieces and nephews that she loved very much.

In 1960, Sarah married her husband Harlon Eugene Ward and they went on to have two sons, Kenneth Ward in 1960 and Anthony Ward in 1962.

In their later years, Sarah and Harlon “Gus” moved to Sodus MI where they called home for over 30 years.

Sarah was a housekeeper for 25 years and then a long-time employee at several laundry mats located in Benton Harbor until her retirement.

Sarah had an amazing long life of 84 years shared with many loved ones. Her home was always filled with love and open arms to family and friends. Sarah was known for her charismatic nature and was well loved by many of her customers and clients.

Sarah will be forever missed.

Visitation for Sarah will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm with a Funeral Service to be held at 1:00pm at Bowerman Funeral Home, 6635 E Main St. Eau Claire, MI 49111. Her role as a grandmother was one she cherished deeply, and she will be lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren, Nichole, Ashley, and Katlin Herr and Philip Papendick, Jacob (Milena) Papendick, and Olivia Allen, all of whom she adored and supported through every stage of their lives.

Obituary Preview: Betty U. Dunavin, 89, went to her heavenly home with Jesus on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024 at Stately Living in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Betty was born Feb. 11, 1934 in Craighead County, Arkansas. She married Ermel J.D. Dunavin on Oct. 8, 1948. They were married for 72 years before Ermel passed in 2021.

Family was everything to Betty. She was a loving, caring mother to her daughters and a doting Mom-ma to many.

She is survived by two daughters; Linda (David) Yeske and Diana (Jan Douglas) Bish; four grandchildren: Kari (Joe) Palazzolo, Melissa (Eric) Adams, Jeffrey (Lillian) Priebe and Chad (Nikki) Priebe; nine great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and another on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ermel J.D. Dunavin; two brothers, Ernest and James Harrell; and one sister, Kathy Delovich. Betty taught Sunday School for many years. She was retired from Eau Claire Public Schools as a beloved bus driver. Betty was also an expert seamstress and loved creating beautiful clothing for many of the members of her family. She always made time for a good game of Scrabble and delighted playing with her girls gathered around the table for many hours. Her boys visited regularly for a breakfast plate loaded with biscuits and gravy deliciously made only how she could make them!

The family lost their Matriarch, their Mother, their Mom-ma and the many other things she was to all of them. But in Earth losing her, Heaven gained a Special Angel. She may be “gone” in common terms, but she isn’t gone – she has just changed her address and we can’t wait to see her again.

Thomas A. Merrill Jr. - December 17, 1971 - January 19, 2024

Obituary Preview: T.J was born on Dec. 17, 1971 - on his mother’s birthday. He passed away on January 18, 2024 at his loved home in the country in Eau Claire, MI very unexpectedly from natural causes.

T.J. was born to his Papa Thomas A. Merrill Sr. and mama Jean-Shari Merrill whom he loved so dearly. He was a very loving and caring person, that would rather give than receive.

T.J. was a pure outdoorsman who was very well known for his pro fishing that started at a very early age. T.J. also loved deer hunting with his dad and best buddy Franky McCain. T.J. was a member of many national fishing organizations where he earned many master awards. T.J. achieved the prestigious Journeyman status in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He graduated from St. Joseph High school in 1990. T.J. would not say “Bye” at the end of a phone call – he would say “later” or “see ya.”

Per T.J.’s wishes, there is no barriers. He always said, come see me now, not when I’m dead. Cremation has taken place. There will be no services at this time.

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ann Steimle. This beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend died on January 10, 2024 at the age of 89 years old.

Mary Ann Steimle was a woman of remarkable will and heart. Born on August 5 of 1934 to James and Margaret Black, Mary Ann spent nearly her whole life in Dowagiac and Eau Claire, Michigan; she went to high school at Dowagiac Union High School (class of 1952), and returned to the Indian Lake Area after studying music at Stephens College and Western Michigan University. She was married to John Steimle, now deceased for 66 years. She taught kindergarten and 1st grade in the Berrien Springs School District and was a beloved caretaker for her family, including her brother James, her parents and husband.

Mary Ann enjoyed the written word with a fervor that many do not know. She collected and sold antiquarian books under the shop name " Busy Hermit Books" for 30 years. The name was certainly appropriate for her. Mary Ann preferred quiet solitude and reflection through reading and music. She always had a book in tow, and she loved to give people books based on their interests. Their home used bookshelves for walls, organized roughly by subject in each room; music books by the piano, cookbooks in the kitchen, fiction in her bedroom. She also loved to play the piano for her friends and loved ones, with an appreciation for music that continued all her life.

Mary Ann deeply cared for animals as well. She had many animal companions over the years, seeing her dogs and cats as part of her beloved family. She volunteered at animal shelters and saw all animals with great compassion, from the household pet to the smallest scurrying mouse.

Obituary Preview: Stanley A. Bishop, 81, of Berrien Center, peacefully went to rest on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Riverridge Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a lengthy battle with dementia.

Stan was born April 26, 1942, in Berrien Springs. The eldest son born to Rex D. and Edith (Arnt) Bishop. His brothers include Roger (Charlene) Bishop and Robert Bishop who survive him.

Stan was the husband of Patricia (Odiorne) Bishop for 60 years and father of Michelle (DuWayne) Mills and Lisa (Daniel) Witters who survive him.

He is also survived by grandchildren; Travis (Sierra McFarland) Landuit, Lauren (Brandon) West, Emily (Brendan) Christ and Alayna Witters.

He was a kind, gentle, and often fun-loving man. Frequently lending a hand to family and neighbors. Following high school, he spent many years employed at Skinner’s Body Shop in Eau Claire, becoming very talented in auto body repair and frame straightening. During that time, he passed his “know how” to many that are still in the field today.

After retiring from Skinners, he began restoring antique tractors. His talent was very appreciated by many collectors. He was also a skilled carpenter. Building the family home while learning plumbing, electrical, and masonry during the process.

Memorial Services to celebrate Stan’s life will take place Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 3 p.m. with a time of visitation one hour prior at Hope Community Church, 2390 Lake Street, Niles, MI 49120.

Obituary Preview: Mary Louise Whitright, a cherished soul known for her loving heart, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on November 29, 2023, in Kalamazoo surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born August 22, 1940, to Henry and Doris Freehling. She grew up on her family’s farm, where the seeds of her hardworking nature were sown.

She graduated from Eau Claire High School and continued her education earning a degree and working as a bookkeeper.

On May 16, 1964, she married the love of her life, Richard Lee Whitright. Along the way they had two children, Jim and Joan. Together they lived, loved and worked beside each other on their farm.

Professionally, Mary's career was marked by her unwavering commitment and integrity. She began her journey as a bookkeeper, but many in the community will fondly remember her for her time as the Transportation Supervisor for the Eau Claire School System. Even after her retirement, Mary continued to serve the educational community, driving bus for Dowagiac Union Schools. All this, while she managed to help run Whitright’s Family Farm.

Mary's dedication extended beyond her professional life into her spiritual community at Zion United Church of Christ. Member and at times board member of the church, she also shared her musical talents as a gifted organist.

When her children were younger, Mary loved her time as leader and club coordinator of the Pipestone Beavers 4-H club. Many remember the fun events, the cookies sales that filled up the hallways of her house and her famous pizza and other baked goods she made.

Family was the cornerstone of Mary's world. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard L. Whitright, and her son, James "Tiny" Whitright, her sisters, Betty (Walter) Davis, Barbara (Jerry) Likes, Margaret (Ron) Churchill, Nancy (James) White and brother James Freehling. Mary's legacy of love and nurturing lives on through her daughter and son in law, Joan and Chris Doty of Kalamazoo, dear friend Pam Skoda and family, sister Hope (Jeff) Sinner, brother David (Becky) Freehling, sister-in-law Georgia (JD) Whitright, along with loving nieces, nephews, aunt, cousins and friends.

A time to celebrate Mary’s life will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Redemption Church (formerly Zion United Church of Christ) at 9134 Black Lake Rd in Eau Claire, Michigan with a time of visitation beginning at noon. An interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Vernon Edward Holle - November 20, 1942 - October 11, 2023

Obituary Preview: So God made a Farmer... That was our dad’s favorite tribute from Paul Harvey, a daily standard in our house at lunch time. God called one of his best home on October 11, 2023, and with deep sorrow and loss, we will miss our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend Vernon Edward Holle. Vern was born November 20,

1942 to the late Edward and Louise (Schilling) Holle, raised on the family farm in Eau Claire. On November 9, 1963 he married Sharon Kublick and together they worked growing apples, peaches,

tomatoes, cucumbers which was a small fraction of the produce that could be found at Holle Orchards.

They also raised three tractor drivers on the side. Dad enjoyed traveling with friends to fruit and vegetable trade shows all over the United States and also abroad with the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association. He never stopped learning and brought that knowledge home to incorporate on the land that he loved. Flying was a favorite pastime and he took to the skies whenever he could. He looked forward to attending tractor pulls with his buddies and most proud of the recently restored first tractor that his parents bought for the farm. This 1938 Massey Harris gave Grandpa Holle many headaches and dad thought grandpa must be grinning from “ear to ear” watching that little red tractor cross the Mighty Mac twice and becoming a “centerfold” in Legacy Quarterly publication. He was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire and for many

years, held different seats as a Pipestone Township council member.

Dad’s greatest enjoyment was farming and watching his grandkids play sports at Michigan Lutheran, St.

Joe and South Haven. He and mom would pack the game truck with whomever would join. Dad’s favorite motto was “Never give up!” and he never did. He never met a root beer float that he didn’t like and fries from McDonald’s were always the best. We miss you Dad, but we are so happy that you’re walking through heaven’s orchards with Jesus, in awesome wonder and catching up with past

friends. Vernon is survived by his wife of nearly sixty years, Sharon. Daughters Becky (Jim) Hardin, Kelly (Tom) Lyons and Leslie (Darren) Priebe. Nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two sisters Marylin

(Lou) Rosenbaum, Cora (Rob) Howland. Visitation will be held Friday October 20, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church, 6605 Pipestone St., Eau Claire

Mi 49111, from 10:00 am until the time of the church service at 11:00 am with a dinner to follow. Following Vern’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private burial in Shanghai Cemetery will be at a

Darwin proudly and honorably served in the United States Military in Vietnam for the United States Army from 1971-1972.

He was born August 16, 1950 to Melvin and Helen Sanders. Dar graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1969. Dar enjoyed many things such as his time in the military, fishing, hunting out west, Budweiser, working with his backhoe and other equipment. Dar was a regular at the Village Tavern in Eau Claire. Dar was self-employed and worked in excavating for most of his life. For many years, Dar was a grave digger for the local cemeteries in Eau Claire.

Dar leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Sharon. His two daughters Kelly Sanders and Darcy Sanders. His mother Helen Sanders. Granchilden, Noah Sanders, Elliot Sanders, Austin Gonzalez, Tyler Gonzalez, Alexis Rios, Abel Sims, Sadie Sims, Roger Sims, and Rylie Sims. Two great grandchildren, Zaire and Miles Stone. Sisters, Charlotte (Rich) Schram, Nancy (Bob) Schilling, Beverly (Dick) Demski. Preceding him in passing his sister Melba (Larry) Newton and his father Melvin Sanders.

Dar had made many friends through his life’s journey and will be remembered by all.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Bowerman Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held in Dar’s honor at Veteran’s Park in Eau Claire, MI on Monday October 9th at 1:00 PM. Military Rites will take place at 1:30 and friends and family will be encouraged to stay, visit with the family, and pay their respects and tributes to Dar.

She was well known for her phenomenal cooking and was an avid reader who shared that love with her granddaughter. Spending time with family was one of the most important things to her. She loved attending sporting events for her children and grandchildren and watching her great-grandchildren play together. She spent many years working alongside her husband running the

Sodus Coal Company and doing sexton work for the local cemeteries. Renda was predeceased by her parents, her husband Lynn and sons Bruce and Jeff. She is survived by son Bryan (Bonnie) Brown, siblings Joann Pottoroff, Marlene Smith, and Robert (Connie) Cochran, grandchildren Ashley (Guy) Cornell, Justin (Heather) Brown and Brandon Brown, great-grandchildren Evelyn, Makenzie and Charlotte Cornell, Owen and Liam Brown, Daughters-in-law Missy Brown and

She was employed seasonally by Crystal Springs Florist, Don Shoes, and Rohring’s Clothing store and sold produce at the South Bend Farmer’s Market. Louise opened one of the first U-Pick farms in the early 1970s, and she was voted WHFB’s Farm Woman of the Year. She enjoyed fashion and wearing the styles through the decades. She was a member of several organizations and participated in various causes in the community. She was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, in-laws, granddaughter Rachel, stepsisters, brothers-in law, and other family members.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends including sons, Wayne and Dennis (Sheila); daughter, Sherri (Cary) Taylor; granddaughter, Sara (Danny) and their children; grandson, Brent (Megan) and their children; sisters-in-law; stepbrother; nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

Otis was born in Bald Knob, Ark. on Nov. 21, 1924, to Otis Sr. and Delia Wheeler.

Otis served in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945 as a PFC Rifleman 745, receiving a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, W/2 Bronze Battle Stars, and 4 Overseas Service Bars.

After his honorable discharge Otis played the guitar and sang in a band along with various other jobs over the years.

Otis started working for Bendix in 1954 as a machine operator and worked his way up to becoming a set up operator in machining. During his employment, Bendix became Allied Signal, and after 37 years he retired in 1991.

Otis is survived by his children: Barry (Pam) Wheeler and David Wheeler of Dyersburg, Tenn., Louann Bauer of Watervliet, and Otis Mark III (Sandra) of St. Joseph; stepchildren: Michael (Jeana) Gilliam of Coloma, Karen Kopp of Sodus, Peggy (Joe) Yacklich of Eau Claire, and John (Diane) Rydecki of Lake Placid, Fla.; 27 grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-great- grandchildren.

Otis was preceded in death by Edna, his wife of 50 years; son, William Wheeler; stepson, Steve Rydecki; grandson, Matthew Wheeler; step-granddaughters, Tracy Rydecki and Amanda Gilliam.

On Oct. 28, 1995, he married May Schultz-Reed, and they shared 27 years of marriage. In 1974, Steve met May while she was working as a waitress at Big Boy, and he was a paramedic (one of the first in the State of Michigan). Steve enjoyed woodworking, swimming, gardening, working with people and training dogs.

Steve will be greatly missed by his wife, May; brother, Jack (Lupita) Reed of Phoenix; brothers-in-law, L. Christine was a graduate of Eau Claire High School. After graduation she worked packing fruit and babysitting. Christine was finally able to obtain employment through the Crossroads/New Beginnings program that assisted the disabled. She was so proud to have worked 13 years at Glenlord Lumber in Stevensville until the business closed. Crossroads then became New Beginnings, and they placed her with Goodwill in Benton Harbor until New Beginnings closed the program.

Her hobbies and interests included family, macrame, crafting, movies, reading and crocheting, and she made sure every child born in the family had a crocheted baby blanket. She devoted her time and energy as a caregiver to family members, including her mother until she passed away at age 73.

Christine was preceded in death by her sisters, Lydia Choc and Antonio Petru; and her parents, George and Anna Galtzew.

Christine leaves behind her sisters, Claudia Kelley and Nadija Cuthbert, both of Eau Claire.

She grew up on the sesquicentennial Michael Farm in Eau Claire that was purchased by her family in 1835. She graduated from Eau Claire High School and attended Alma College in Alma, Mich.

After Dorothy married Fred Piedt on Oct. 1, 1949, the farm took his name, and the couple farmed the property all their married lives. Today, her grandsons operate Piedt Farms.

Dorothy enjoyed the farm and driving around. She loved Jesus and taught junior church for many years. She and her husband were also active with Mission Aviation Fellowship. She even had a pilot’s license that she earned at the age of 32.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael Piedt; three grandchildren: Ryan and Greg (Jessi) Piedt, and Amanda Miller (Cody); and six great-grandchildren: Scotty, Jaxx, Remi, and Dawson Piedt; and Caden and Brooklyn Miller.

She was famous at gatherings and church potlucks for her homemade chicken and dumplings, and you could count on the pan being empty.

She not only raised her children but helped raise most of her younger brothers and sisters. When she wasn’t working outside the home, you could find her in her garden, watering her flowers or feeding her birds.

She volunteered at the yearly Veterans program, and she attended Bright Star Tabernacle with her husband of 55 years.

Patsy is survived by her husband, Ralph W. Elkins Jr.; son, Randy Elkins; daughters, Kathy Arend and Melissa (Chris) Conaway; four grandchildren: Kayla, Jayce, Kasey Arend and Carter Conaway; brothers: Morris, Tom and Mike Canard; sisters: Arlene Bobo, Wilma Miller, Judy Huizenga; like-a-sister, Nancy Garski; and many nieces and nephews.
