Departed: 03/31/2024 (Cornell)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Elaine (Strzok) Craker, age 69, of Cornell passed away on Sunday, March 31st, 2024 at home surrounded by family. She was born on June 28th, 1954 in Oak Park, IL to Theodore and Louise (Stokosa) Strzok and was the oldest of seven children. The young family moved to a farm south of Thorp and eventually settled in Holcombe where Sharon enrolled as a 2nd grader at the Holcombe school, graduating with the class of 1972.
She caught the eye of Lee Craker Jr. at Larry's South Shore Resort in Holcombe in 1970 and they married on July 15th, 1972 at Holy Cross Parish in Cornell. After a few years in Cornell, they chose the outskirts of town to build their country home for their family. Lee and Sharon witnessed many sporting and music events over the years for their children and grandchildren which brought them immense pride and joy.
Sharon's work ethic was instilled as a young girl at her family's business - Ted & Lou's. After marriage she worked in clerical at the Cornell Paper Mill for several years and in 2000 achieved an accounting degree at CVTC. Sharon's employment years culminated at Heyde Companies and Dove Healthcare with retirement in 2013. However, she loved being a wife, homemaker, mom, and a grandmother the very best.
Sharon embraced her Polish heritage with her love of polka music and traditional Polish foods - pierogies and golumpkis. When the opportunity arose to travel to her ancestral Poland in 2010, she invited Lee to accompany her on a trip of a lifetime to a land from where all eight great-grandparents immigrated. Lee and Sharon also enjoyed travel to Hawaii, Florida, and many road trips across the U.S./Canada anywhere from the East Coast to British Columbia over the years.
Other interests were her love of hiking and skiing at Brunet Island State Park, kayaking, music, reading and flower gardening. Sharon felt honored to share her gardens in the 2017 Lake Holcombe Garden Tour.
Surviving are her loving husband and best friend of 51 years Lee, their two devoted sons Eric (Molly) Craker of Mikana and Steve (Terri) Craker of Cornell, and their lovely daughter Katie (Dan) Olsen of Inver Grove Heights, MN. Lee and Sharon's sweet grandchildren: Sean and Maggie Craker, Parker Craker, Isabella (James) Acierto, and Emily, Meredith, and Hallie Olsen. And the "greats" – Mateo and Raya Acierto.
Sharon is also survived by all her caring siblings - Sid (Jill) Strzok of Monument, CO, Tom (Sandy) Strzok of Holcombe, Sandy (Jack) Evans of Shell Knob, MO, Laurie (Howard) Hennekens, Brian (Shawna) Strzok and Ted (Lori Craker) Strzok, Jr. all of Holcombe. Additionally survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, Lee's siblings, and dear friends.

Melissa Leigh (Kadlec) Dixon - March 03, 1975 - March 11, 2024

Departed: 03/11/2024 (Cornell)
Obituary Preview: Melissa Leigh Dixon March 3rd, 1975 - March 11th, 2024
We lost our dear Missy on a Monday. It was one of her favorite days of the week. But then again, so was Tuesday, Wednesday, and all the rest. A shining light, who truly enjoyed each day to its fullest, Missy embodied a consistent joyous spirit and an unfailing love of life, even in her final days.
Melissa (Kadlec) Dixon was born March 3rd,1975 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chippewa Falls, WI, the third daughter of her incredibly loving parents Ronald and Sandra (Klass) Kadlec of Cornell, WI. It is with enormous sadness, that just days after her 49th birthday, she exited her beloved life on this earth.
Encircled by her devoted family, accompanied by her favorite music and blanketed in God’s love, her passing on March 11th was a peaceful blessing. Her 2 1/2-year arduous fight with Stage IV Signet Ring Cell Colon Cancer and Peritoneal Carcinomatosis was nothing short of remarkable, both physically and emotionally. Her steadfast grace and positivity were unfaltering, even when her tormented body was battling against this cruel disease.
Melissa was raised and attended school in Cornell, WI. Her two older siblings adored their new baby sister. Missy, as she was nicknamed by them, became their favorite playmate; a real living “doll” who was strollered around the neighborhood and toted in the plastic bike seat carrier all over the small town. The decade age difference between she and her siblings created a perfect situation for her older sisters to complete “Child Care 101-The Home Course.” Subsequently, they were heavily recruited as reliable babysitters throughout the town.
When asked, Missy stated one of her favorite times in her life was junior high school. It was at this stage she was recognized as a promising musician. By the end of high school, her proficiency in piano, percussion and marimba earned her so many district and state Solo and Ensemble award ribbons that they all wouldn’t fit on her band uniform.
As it was in those years, students often participated in more than just one sport. Missy enjoyed many seasons of volleyball, basketball, and track & field (emphasis on field, as there were no fast runners in this family). She was delighted to achieve, as she described, "slightly above mediocre success".
Following high school, Missy attended UW-Eau Claire and enjoyed further instrumental music opportunities. Because of her kind and caring nature, she was motivated to combine those traits with her love of music. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from UWEC and following internships in suburban areas, she was especially interested in finding a way to utilize her degree in her preferred rural setting.
Complementing her board certification in Music Therapy, she also earned board certification as an Activity Therapy Consultant. She cultivated a career in Health and Human Services in Rusk County. She worked for many years enriching the lives of seniors through Activity Coordination and Music Therapy. She later advanced into administrative roles but remained very connected to direct patient care.
Missy enjoyed transporting nursing home residents to her home for picnics and to local parades to either watch or participate. Regularly, she worked late to engage nursing home residents with guitar, piano, and vocal music.
When asked about some of the proudest moments in her career, she said her most rewarding memories were entering her residents’ artwork and handiwork in the country and state fairs contests, where they often took home a 1st prize ribbon.
Melissa (as she was called at work) always went the extra mile to brighten her residents’ days and often brought her own children to the workplace to teach them the importance of service and respect to seniors.
Melissa served on the board of directors for her state professional association, including one term as state president. She enjoyed networking with colleagues, striving to improve methods and therapies. In 2010, she was awarded the Wisconsin Activity Professional of the Year, which she humbly accepted.
After nearly 20 years in this sector, Melissa began work for the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Barron, Rusk and Washburn Counties; More recently, she shifted her focus to consulting, credentialing, and home health case management for several private agencies, until illness forced her retirement.
While in her twenties, she attend 4th of July festivities in her hometown, only to have fireworks of her own erupt. Missy met the man who would later become her husband of 27 years. On a lovely August day in 1996, she married the love of her life, Jon Dixon, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cornell.
It was at this church she had been Baptized, took First Communion and celebrated Confirmation. She continued a lifelong membership at Holy Cross and served as their primary organist for 25 years, only relinquishing those duties this past year as her illness progressed.
She and Jon first settled in Cornell but later built their family home in Holcombe, WI. From this loving and dedicated marriage, they welcomed two children, that they both so loved and adored. Their daughter Ellie Jo, and son, Carter Jon were indeed their most cherished accomplishments.
In recent years, their home and surrounding land became home to a growing beef cattle herd and thus known as the Back 40 Farm. They also attracted the occasional barn cat and fell in love with their darling Yorkie pups, Murray and Jackson.
As if a career, marriage, motherhood, and weekly church organist wasn’t busy enough for her, Missy also enjoyed several other “side hustles” including waitressing and sell fishing licenses at the Big Minnow in Holcombe, since she was driving her kids back and forth to work there anyway. She also trained and worked as a ski patrol for Christie Mountain, to accrue lift tickets for herself and her children.
The side hustle she most enjoyed was growing her direct sales business, Norwex. Over the past decade, she developed into a gifted demonstrator and advocated for these wonderful products. Through Norwex, she especially enjoyed new friendships, attending national meetings, and making a positive impact on her customers’ lives.
Prior to and even after her cancer diagnosis, Missy was always a joiner, a participator, a volunteer. If her kids were in a school musical, so was she. When a chaperone was needed for a school field trip, she signed up.
If a travel opportunity of any kind presented itself, her guaranteed response was always an enthusiastic “Heck Yeah!” In her 49 years, she had visited many U.S. cities and states, with Montana and California among her favorites; She loved family time with Mickey Mouse in FL and CA, and was always first in line for the biggest and scariest of roller coasters. With extended family, she enjoyed a few sailings on cruises, visiting ports in the Caribbean and Alaskan waterways.
In 2016, Missy crossed the pond to visit several countries in Europe, with her sister and niece. She was masterful in driving the stick-shift rental on the autobahn to attend Oktoberfest in Munich; then motored thru Austria to enjoy The Sound of Music Bicycle Tour in Salzburg; ascended the winding roadways of the Swiss Alps; cruising the breathtaking drive along the French Riveria and soaked in the beauty of Barcelona, Spain.
In the spring of 2022, Missy felt well enough to join twelve family members on a visit to the iconic canals and gorgeous tulip fields of Amsterdam, as well as, the historic and beautiful sights of Paris and Versailles. Even throughout many hospitalizations, Missy rallied herself for “bucket list" events. These included seeing Sir Elton John in concert with her husband and then. at a later date, insisted on being discharged from the hospital, as there was no way she would miss The Taylor Swift Eras Tour Concert that she had planned to attend with her children!
Described by all who knew her, Missy was one of the most caring and kind humans to walk this earth. Despite her life being cut shorter than one would hope, her admirable work ethic and enthusiastic “YES” attitude allowed her to pack in a great deal of living with the time that she had.
Preceding Missy in death are paternal grandparents, Anton and Leona Kadlec and maternal grandparents, Bill and Elaine Klass, all of Cornell, WI.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jon Dixon of Holcombe; her cherished daughter, Ellie Jo (Dixon) and son-in-law Tyler Jones of Holcombe; her beloved son, Carter Dixon of Madison, WI and her precious 3-month-old grandson, Dallas William Jones of Holcombe. Also, surviving her are parents, Ron and Sandy Kadlec of Cornell, WI and her in-laws John and Gloria Dixon of Holcombe; sisters and brothers-in-laws Shelley Kadlec and Michael Janssen of Eau Claire and Jill and Willis Wolfe of Cornell. Additionally, Missy is survived by one niece, Annika Ekblad (Brendan Byrne) of Minneapolis and three nephews, Brandon Wolfe (Ashley) of New Auburn; Brady Wolfe (Hillery) and Alex Ekblad, all of Eau Claire. She is also survived by many wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins, one great niece, Aubree and four great nephews Braiden, Bennett and Bowen Wolfe of New Auburn and Lincoln Wolfe of Eau Claire;
She is also survived by very special family friends, Phuong Anh “Tracey” and Huy K Nguyen of Hanoi, Vietnam. And always in close vicinity were her beloved Yorkies Murray and Jackson, and her granddog, goldendoodle, Remy.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the countless caring friends, neighbors, extended family, and colleagues who prayed and supported Missy and her family throughout this challenging journey. Additionally, they would like to recognize and extend their sincerest thank you's to the excellent and compassionate staff members at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, especially Dr. Daniel Burns and the Cancer Care Center team; Dr. Jason Beckerman and the Surgical Teams and Hospitalists who made every effort to extend her life;

Judy Ann (Walters) Taylor - April 07, 1944 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Cornell)
Obituary Preview: Judy Ann Taylor nee Walters was born on April 7, 1944. According to family lore, she was born at home during an early spring blizzard that left her parents, Rayland and Marie, stranded, unable to leave their home. Judy’s life began from the comforts of home, and as her life unfolded, she never wandered too far from that home. Judy, aged 79, died on December 19, 2023, surrounded by her family after a short, aggressive bout with cancer.
Family, from the beginning until the end, was the pinnacle of her existence. Raised in a family of five children, including an older sister (Sharon), two younger twin-sisters (Kay and Rae) and a younger brother (Peter). Judy lived with her family in downtown Holcombe. A scion of the fun-loving Walters family – her folks were known throughout the area for their local supper club (Ray’s) and lumber mill.
A 1962 graduate of Lake Holcombe High School, Judy assumed many of the notable characteristics of her parents, Rayland and Marie. It was well-known, for example, that Judy had Ray’s infectious laugh and Marie’s taste for Polish food. No one knows the exact time or date (or at least no one has come forth to admit the actual series of events) but sometime during those high school years, Judy met the man who would become her husband, Joe. It is fair to say Joe was the love of her life, but that type of flowery language is not often expressed in any Walters or Taylor household, so it will be left that they fell in love and were married for exactly 50 years, until Joe’s untimely passing in May 2015.
After living with her sister Sharon in Chicago for a time after graduation, Judy conveniently, and some would say, rather quickly, found her way back to Holcombe where she married Joe on May 15, 1965. Judy and Joe moved to the Taylor family farm, on the western banks of the Holcombe Flowage, some seven miles from the Walters’ home in downtown Holcombe.
It is quite possible that Judy would have sworn off marriage to Joe if she knew just what she was getting herself into when she arrived with her belongings at Rural Route 2 in Birch Creek in the late spring of ‘65. As it seems, Judy’s nuptial arrangements not only included Joe, but an entire family of Taylors – Joe’s parents, Leo and Irene, and Joe’s older brothers, Bob and John. The newlyweds, along with their first in what would be a rotating series of dogs named Wyatt Earp, lived right across the driveway from Joe’s family. Eventually the dog names would transition from Western outlaws to vice presidents (Spiro) and Packer greats (Ezra and Reggie). Regardless of the name, there was always a dog – or three.
From the get-go, Judy and Joe held that farm together. Joe worked night and day, so his brothers could pursue other career paths and eventually move to Eau Claire, And, while Leo and eventually Irene’s health declined, Judy was always their designated driver. And drive she did: Not a week would go by when Judy would take Leo to a doctor’s appointment or Irene to Lowell’s in Cornell for some grocery shopping. In addition to her prowess as a designated driver, she mastered a range of farm-hand skills, including driving-tractor, washing-milkers and cooking for large groups of people including bearded, city-folk cousins and friends who would show up from downstate every year in late November wearing blaze orange and carrying guns. Down the road, one of them (Jay and his wife, Linda) became a steady and helpful presence in Judy’s life.
Yes, as previously mentioned, there were plenty of dogs, but over the course of ten years, from 1966 to 1975, the dogs were slowly overtaken by five kids. First Brian, then Jill, then Tom, then Mitch and finally, Joell. Two parents, five kids and several dogs – all cozily ensconced in a double-wide trailer.
From about 1973, when Brian entered kindergarten, until Joell graduated from LHHS in 1993, it’s a safe bet that Judy logged more hours at school-related events than any other person in the district. There was little league baseball, Cub scouts, Brownies, Baton twirling, and piano lessons. There was early morning junior high basketball practice and eventually all the varsity sports including football and volleyball. Won or lose, home or away, there was one sure thing at these events: Judy was the loudest fan. Her voice could piece the most raucous crowd, embarrassing whichever child happened to be participating.
During her child-raising years, one might think, especially after reading the above paragraph, that Judy was obsessed with sports. Yes, of course, she cheered just as loudly on Sunday for the Packers as she did at any high school game. But before we leave these years behind, it must be said that Judy, maybe because she’s played the alto saxophone, demanded that her children learn to play a musical instrument (a trait she probably inherited from her mother, Marie, who was an infamous taskmaster) and that they get good grades so they could go to college. Both these requirements, I am happy to report, were fulfilled by all her children. Remarkably four of her children went to college and all of them became teachers. Joell in Fall Creek, Mitch in Suring, WI, Jill in Burlington, WI and Brian at the University of Wisconsin as an adjunct professor. It also must be noted that Judy devoted most of her adult life to her son, Tom. Nearly inseparably for more than 50 years, Judy made sure Tom was always included in everything. There is a special place in the Great Beyond for the role she played in Tom’s life.
Besides raising five children and working with Joe full-time on the farm, Judy spent her free time on a range of interesting, community-minded activities. She was a county election clerk for almost 40 years, on the Birch Creek Town Board, a member of the Holcombe Women’s Club, the Holcombe Methodist Church and eventually involved with the Cornell VFW. Often in tow with her great friend, Norma, she loved to make trips to Cornell, Ladysmith, Chippewa and if she could bear the traffic, Eau Claire. She also worked several years at Paradise Shores and occasionally at the Holcombe school. Amazingly creative, for many years, Judy tool an active part in crocheting, basketweaving, pottery and other artistic activities, proudly displaying many of her projects in her yard and in her home. And it seemed she and Sue Crank were constantly planning the next reunion for the Class of 1962.
Some say to live a full life you must travel the globe, experience a lot of cultures; the whole “The World is Your Oyster” thing. Judy bucked that trend. Even though she managed to travel to several places like Milwaukee for many Brewer games, Minneapolis for three bar mitzvahs – even Mexico, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Nashville, in her later years, following Joe’s passing, Judy’s “oyster” were the county roads between Holcombe and Fall Creek, where she (along with Tom of course) was able to rekindle her love for school sports by watching two of her grandchildren (Taylor and Jenna) compete in a range of activities.
It's remarkable, extraordinary really, just how many lives you impact when you live in the same place for almost 80 years. Judy leaves behind a list of friends too numerous to mention, several cousins, and given that she had five kids, a wealth of grandchildren. That cast of characters includes Brian and Rebecca (Goldberg) and their sons, Max, Jacob and Ben in Golden Valley, MN. Jill and Bryan Hanson and their daughters Mackenzie and Ellie in Elm Grove, WI. Mitch and Kim Taylor and their children, Leo and Lilly in Gillet, WI. Joell and Terry Anders and their children Taylor and Jenna in Fall Creek, WI. And of course, Tom. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rayland and Marie, her sister Sharon and her husband, Joe.
May her memory be a blessing and live on in the stories her family and friends continue to share when they get together for holiday parties (Christmas was always her favorite – it was easy to tell when you drove by the farm and saw that giant, lit Santa), Friday fish fries or just driving in the car to get groceries, buy another ball of twine at Farm and Fleet or to yet another sporting event where she could cheer her (grand)kids onto victory.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024 at 6pm at Borton-Leiser Funeral Home, 220 S 7th Street in Cornell, WI with Pastor Greg Sima Officiating.
Visitation will begin at 3pm and go until the start of service at 6pm at the funeral home. Express online condolences at www.bortonleiserfuneralhome.com
