He was surrounded with love by his wife Debra and daughter Alicia during his transition. He was born in Hoven, South Dakota to the late Ruth and Harold Rausch on August 2, 1952. Through this union 5 children were born, Arnie, Reynold, Donald, Larry and LaVonne. Upon the death of his dad, Ruth married Alois Van Well, and to that union a brother Andrew Van Well was born. Arnie, being the oldest sibling, developed a strong educational and work ethic at an early age. His early education began in Hoven. His high school years were centered at O’Gorman High School in Sioux, Falls, South Dakota, where he attended a Minor Seminary Program preparing him for the Priesthood. During the summer months, Arnie worked in the Black Hills National Park at the State Lodge as a cook. Upon completion of High School, Arnie enrolled in St. Mary’s Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minnesota where he stayed for 2 years. He finished his education at the University of South Dakota, a public research university in Vermillion, South Dakota. He graduated with a degree in psychology, minoring in the German language. Arnie enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1974 and using his skills as a German linguist, was stationed in West Berlin.
Arnie received the joy of music and faith from his grandparents, mother, father, and 8 “aunties”. He learned to share that love of music in his community, in his church, and later on in the Air Force and at St. Nicholas Church for the past 41 years. His involvement as a member of 4-H growing up and later as an adult leader was lovingly shared with his daughter, Alicia. It was in 4-H that he learned his love of leathercrafting. Alicia continues giving her time and talents to 4-H, even today.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1974 where he used his German language as a linguist. He was stationed in West Berlin, Germany. In 1977, during his first tour of duty, he worked diligently as a linguist. In 1977, it came time to change his duty station (PCS), and his replacement arrived, Debra Lamberti. This was the beginning of a wonderful period in his life. He met his future bride, Debra, his “replacement”, and they became engaged in 2 weeks. He returned stateside to Monterey, California for an Intermediate German Language course. After 6 months apart, Debra joined him in Monterey, and they were married on April 15, 1978. He returned to Debra for a 2nd tour of duty in West Berlin, where a beautiful daughter was conceived. Debra was honorably discharged, and they made a PCS in August 1981, which brought them to Laurel, MD. He finished his 2nd enlistment and went on to enjoy his professional career as a government contractor (becoming a Senior Test Engineer) with the Honeywell Corporation for 26 years.
Arnie learned to play both the 6 and 12 string guitars. He was also a member of the Catholic Cursillo Movement of the Archdiocese of Washington and served as a musician for many Cursillo weekends. He also served as a member of the Secretariat leadership of the Cursillo Movement as the 4th Day Co-chair.
If you were to ask him what his greatest joy and accomplishment was, he would tell you his lovely bride and his daughter.
Arnie was preceded in death by his brothers Reynold Rausch and Andrew Van Well, and brother-in-law Earl Kruse (LaVonne).
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife and loving partner Debra Ann Rausch of Laurel, MD, his daughter Alicia M. Rausch of Charles Town, W.VA., sister, LaVonne Kruse of Aberdeen, SD, brothers, Donald Rausch of Rapid City, S.D, and Lawrence “Larry” Rausch of Blanchester, Ohio. So, this goes on……

Otie Jean Benson - February 15, 1929 - March 09, 2022

Departed: 03/09/2022 (Beltsville)
Obituary Preview: Otie Jean Benson Friday February 21, 1929 to Wednesday March 9, 2022 Otie Jean Benson was born on Friday February 15, 1929 in Hyattsville, Md. She was the youngest of 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. Her early years in the 1930s were spent playing outside and climbing trees. As she grew older, she helped her siblings at the family-owned drug store close to home. She often recounted her memories of making hand-dipped ice cream cones. During the depression the family raised rabbits to help themselves and others have meat on their table but she and her sister Ana were known to invite a rabbit or two in to play indoors while the parents were working. The two of them also enjoyed tea parties on the lawn. After the primary grades, she attended the no longer existing Hyattsville High School where the girls focused on typing and shorthand while the boys concentrated on shop classes. The cafeteria was then run by the home economics class and proudly served grilled cheese and cream of tomato soup on Friday. A favorite for everyone!
Otie began her career with a job at the Washington Gas Light Company where she fell in love with and later married her future husband Bob on January 21, 1950. They went on to be married for 66 years. They initially lived in West Hyattsville until 1959 when they moved to Beltsville, MD where they lived for nearly 60 years. They had 2 children to include a daughter Susan and a son Wayne. During her many years in Beltsville, she stayed home to raise both children. She was an avid sewer, did many crafts, loved her flowers and hummingbirds and walked millions of miles in the neighborhood. She and Bob spent many weekend nights square dancing at the log lodge at the Beltsville Agricultural Center. Otie was a kind and caring soul who was quick to bake cookies or food for others in thanks and no one ever left her table hungry whether friend or family. She worked tirelessly and never quit at any task or situation that came her way. She was an incredible role model for her children, grandchildren and others who met her or witnessed the story of her life.
Otie was blessed to share her life with family and friends. Her sister Ana and she had a very special bond that few people share. From the early years until the day of Otie’s passing, they talked twice a day every day to support and uplift each other through the joys and challenges that life brings to all of us.

Carolyn J. Gatto - February 15, 1930 - February 24, 2022

Departed: 02/24/2022 (Beltsville)
Obituary Preview: Surrounded by her children, Mrs. Carolyn Joyce Gatto went on to join her beloved husband, Richard Joseph Gatto in Heaven on February 24, 2022.
Born Carolyn Joyce Leigh in Macon GA, on February 15, 1930, Carolyn was blessed with a long and full life. She frequently reminisced of how she thoroughly enjoyed her time as a college student at the University of Miami and then how she loved driving cross country discovering America in the early 1950s.  Then, displaying the courage she would certainly draw on later, Carolyn and her best friend packed up and moved to Washington DC, where she began a government job.  It was at that very job, where she would meet and fall in love with a very persistent, recently returning Korean War Veteran.  After a whirlwind courtship, the two married on May 6, 1953 and began their 62 year union.  Unfortunately, soon after their wedding, Carolyn would need to summon her deep rooted courage once again to face and ultimately beat breast cancer, an absolutely devastating diagnosis at the time. Once cured, Carolyn went on to have two children and enjoy a 50 year career selling Real Estate in and around Montgomery County.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Brenda Lynn Benya, her son John Richard Gatto, five grandchildren: Gloria Starr Benya-Zwald, Joshua Adam Benya, Jessica Crystal Benya, Christopher Jason Gatto, Courtney June Gatto and two great grandsons: Zachary Hunter Benya-Zwald and Dylan Benya-Zwald.  Her in-laws include Jefferey Adam Benya, Stephanie Denise Gatto and Christopher David Zwald.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and the community. They provide an opportunity to honor and celebrate the deceased person's life, and can also serve as a historical record of their existence.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other third party. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their personality, achievements, and charitable donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute to your loved one.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Typically, you can submit it online through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published, contact the publication or platform where it was published to see if they allow revisions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes additional biographical information and personal details.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary in advance can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. Just be sure to store it in a safe place where it can be found after your passing.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in preserving historical records. You may also contact local libraries or historical societies for assistance.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with friends and family who may not receive traditional newspaper notifications.

What is the etiquette for responding to an obituary?

If you're close to the family, consider sending flowers, making a donation in the deceased person's name, or offering words of condolence. For acquaintances or coworkers, a simple message expressing sympathy is appropriate.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and personal stories can help bring the deceased person to life and make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Be respectful and considerate when sharing sensitive information about the deceased person's life. Avoid including details that might be hurtful or embarrassing to surviving family members.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

How do I notify out-of-town relatives and friends about an obituary?

You can share the obituary through email, social media, or online platforms specifically designed for sharing news of a loved one's passing.

Can I create a memorial website or online tribute instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial websites and tributes can provide a permanent space for friends and family to share memories and condolences. You can also include photos, videos, and other multimedia elements.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The length of time an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or publication. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I reprint an obituary from another source?

If you want to reprint an obituary from another source, such as a newspaper or online platform, be sure to obtain permission from the original publisher first.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider consulting with family members, friends, or a funeral director for guidance on what information to include.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or poems that resonate with the deceased person's life or personality can add depth and meaning to the obituary.
