Departed: 04/27/2024 (West Jefferson)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Jerry Lee Phillips, age 72, of Fleetwood passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at his home unexpectedly.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Mission Home Baptist Church with Rev. Chris and Christopher Cox officiating. Burial will be private for the family. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 from 6-8pm at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Phillips was born in Ashe County on February 20, 1952, to the late Russell and Maude Phillips. He worked at Heilig-Meyers furniture for a good portion of his younger years until he transitioned to his own car business. He loved being outdoors, doing yardwork, singing, and Elvis Presley. To say he was one of Elvis’ biggest fans was an understatement. He was outspoken on religion and politics and could rant endlessly about the two.
He had a love of gospel music and the Lord. He would sing no matter where he was, and his voice could be heard in any crowd. Two of his favorite hymns were “Beulah Land” and “When the Clouds Roll Back”. He was a talented poem writer as well. One of the greatest poems written was one dedicated to his wife after her passing in 2017. The love they shared was a blessing for their family to witness. He spoke often of the day he would be reunited with her in their Heavenly home and knowing they are joined again brings solace to the family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Gayle Phillips.
Mr. Phillips is survived by three daughters, Michelle Richardson and husband Marty, Tina Phipps and husband Kevin, and Nicole Lambert and husband Matt all of West Jefferson; one adopted grandson, Zach Brooks and wife Chanda of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; four granddaughters, Callie Shepherd, Haley Phipps, Kendall Shepherd, and Macie Richardson; two grandsons Keelan Phipps and Weston Lambert; a step grandson, Gage Lambert; a step granddaughter, Laci Lambert; two great-grandsons, Phoenix and Arlo Brooks; three brothers Carroll Phillips, Clayton Phillips, and John Phillips of Fleetwood; one sister Charlotte Trivette of Fleetwood; several nieces and nephews also survive. Obituary Preview: Obituary for Lois Hardin Jones born February 10, 1925
On Easter morning March 31, 2024, “Early in the morning, while it was still dark,’ Lois Lavaughn Hardin Jones met her Savior for a great homecoming. Lois Jones was a faithful follower of Jesus and we are sure she leapt into his arms as she entered eternity.
Lois was a native of Ashe County, the daughter of Millard and Lou Eva Goodman Hardin. She was one of 13 children who learned the importance of family, faith and a strong work ethic. Lois was the last of her immediate family. Lois attended Draughn Business School and was trained in business and administration. She worked for Tam Bowie, attorney, in West Jefferson for several years. She spent many years working in the insurance business. She began her work at Barr Insurance Agency as a secretary/administrative assistant. She later trained as a licensed insurance agent and served in that capacity until she retired.
Lois was a founding member of Midway Baptist Church. She loved her church and she and Howard served faithfully in many capacities. Lois was a Sunday School teacher, WMU leader, choir member, Vacation Bible School teacher and much more. Her family and her church were of primary importance in her life.
Lois was a long time volunteer with Ashe Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed being able to talk with patients and assist them in their needs. It was a joy for her to be a light in what may have been a difficult time for patients, staff and their families.
Lois was a devoted wife and mother. She raised three daughters and taught them the importance of family, loving others and following Christ. Lois was a wonderful cook providing delicious meals with ingredients from the garden she and Howard planted and nurtured. Lois loved flowers and always enjoyed planting flowers in the spring and nurturing them as they grew. She definitely had a green thumb. She also was a good seamstress making clothes for her children as well as crafting beautiful quilts for each of them as well. Lois also crocheted and many of her doilies adorn the homes of her children and grandchildren.
Lois was born February 10, 1925 and this year, 2024, turned 99 years old. To celebrate her incredible life we gathered to shower her with love and appreciation. She was surrounded by family and friends and, of course, chocolate cake (she loved anything chocolate). She is pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, Howard Ellis Jones. She is survived by her three daughters, Anna Maria Jones Russell, Pamela Reon Jones Laurence (Danny), and Sheree Hardin Jones. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Robyn Russell Matisko, Christopher Russell, Tricia Laurence Roberts (Bruce), Angela Laurence Hamilton (Mark) and one pre-deceased granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Laurence Hoffman (Drew). Lois is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews.
We want to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Forest Heights Assisted Living Memory Care in Winston-Salem. The staff were exceptional caregivers to Lois and to the family for almost 6 years. We also want to thank Trellis Supportive Care for the loving care given to Mama as she moved toward eternity.

Chris Taylor of Midway Baptist Church, Rev. Sheree Jones (daughter) and Rev. Patricia Greene of Hospice of the Piedmont will be officiating.

William Reece Graham, III - August 11, 1938 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (West Jefferson)
Obituary Preview: Mr. William Reece Graham, III, better known as Reece, age 85 of West Jefferson, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Margate Health and Rehab.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 2pm at West Jefferson United Methodist Church with Rev. Blake Smarr officiating. Burial will follow in the West Jefferson City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, one hour prior to the funeral services.
Reece possessed an affable personality and spirit that made him a friend to many. Wit, wisdom, a range of skill and abilities along with a grit spawning from life and adventures on the family farm in Ashe County’s Todd community with his brother Charles Mason Graham, sister Elizabeth (Betsy) Graham, and first cousin Hobart (Hobie) Davis served as the base of a happy and successful life that was evident early, particularly high school sports endeavors and accomplishments. In 1955, he became Beaver Creek High School’s first football quarterback, played point guard on the basketball team, and catcher on the baseball team. He graduated from Beaver Creek in 1955 and applied his athletic and intellectual abilities to become a 1959 graduate from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in three years. He accepted a high school teacher position and taught business related courses in Aberdeen, Maryland, as he started a family with Judy Chipman Wiles Graham. Reece applied his business knowledge, teaching acumen, and interpersonal abilities to gain employment with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the start of a 32-year career that took him and his family to Roanoke, Virginia, back to Greensboro and then Charlotte, North Carolina. Positions held included Senior Examiner, Field Supervisor, a commended, continuous role in the FDIC’s training program as an Instructor, and Corporate Recruiter. These roles illustrate the breadth of his abilities and professional respect he garnered. In addition to his work accomplishments, Reece regularly lended his time, skills, and abilities to support God’s work by chairing finance and audit committees and councils of churches he and his family attended.
Reece relished and enjoyed the sport, competition, and comradery of golf, pre- and post-retirement. He used golf to spend quality time with his father-in-law, R. Don Wiles, his sons and nephews as they grew their golfing abilities, and he would also routinely reach out to most any work associate to meet him on the golf course after a day of work. Reece’s affable personality made golfing with him not only competitive, but entertaining and fun. He was truly a “ringer” in the game of life, and he will be greatly and sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family expresses sincere appreciation and gratitude to the many caregivers from Generations Ashe, Margate Health & Rehab, and Medi Home Health & Hospice. Your work and care helped Reece be as comfortable as possible - thank you.
Survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith (Judy) Chipman Wiles Graham of West Jefferson, NC; sons and daughters-in-law William Reece Graham, IV, (Margaret) of Charlotte, NC, and Randall (Randy) B. Graham (Josie) of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren William (Will) Reece Graham, V; Stuart Leigh Graham; Caroline Elizabeth Graham; and Cecilia Anne Graham; brother and sisters-in law Charles Mason Graham (Elaine) of Winston Salem, NC and Kay Wiles Schieren of Boone, NC; brother-in-law Rouss Hartzog of Mooresville, NC; and several loved nieces and nephews.
Reece is preceded by his parents William (Bill) Reece and Louise Oliver Graham, II; sister Elizabeth (Betsy) Dell Graham; and sister-in-law Marlyn Wiles Hartzog.
Memorial may be made to West Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 826, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or to Beaver Creek High School Memorial Fund, NCCF/ACCF Regional Office, P. O. Box 2851, Hickory, NC 28603. Please make checks payable to: NCCF/ACCF for BCHS Memorial Scholarship Fund.
