What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and other relevant details.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and the community. They provide an opportunity to honor the deceased, celebrate their life, and offer support to those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or other professional service. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and relationships.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorials, or charitable donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A typical obituary is around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos to accompany the written notice. This can help make the obituary more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or via email.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or stories can help make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online-only publications.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In some cases, yes. If you notice errors or omissions in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform where it was posted to see if corrections can be made.

What is the purpose of an online obituary?

An online obituary provides a permanent digital record of a person's life and legacy. It allows friends and family to share condolences, memories, and photos from anywhere in the world.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period of time.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to add multimedia elements such as links to memorial websites, videos, or photo galleries to enhance the tribute.

What is a memorial website?

A memorial website is a dedicated online space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences for the deceased. It may also include features like guestbooks, candles, or donation options.

How do I find an old obituary?

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?
