Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and share memories.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. Some obituaries may also include a photo, quotes, or personal anecdotes.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing the obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and detail desired. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to write a comprehensive and meaningful obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version should be reviewed and approved by family members or loved ones.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They'll provide guidance on their submission process, which may include emailing or faxing the obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes! Many online platforms and funeral home websites allow you to publish an obituary online. This can be a convenient way to reach a wider audience and allow friends and family to share condolences and memories.

How long does an obituary stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep it up indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the specific publication or platform's policies. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submitting it to minimize errors.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the line or word count.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Including photos in an obituary can help bring the person's story to life and make it more personal. Check with the publication or platform for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or complexities surrounding the person's passing (e.g., suicide or addiction), it's essential to approach the topic with care and compassion. Consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor for guidance on how to handle these situations.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a cause close to their heart.

How do I notify social media platforms about someone's passing?

Major social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have procedures for reporting deceased users' accounts. You'll typically need to provide proof of death (e.g., a link to the obituary) and follow their specific guidelines for memorializing or removing the account.

Can I create a memorial website for my loved one?

Yes! Memorial websites allow you to create a dedicated space for sharing memories, stories, and photos of your loved one. These sites often offer features like guestbooks, candle lighting ceremonies, and donation tracking.

How do I cope with grief after losing a loved one?

Losing someone close can be incredibly difficult. It's essential to prioritize self-care during this challenging time. Reach out to supportive friends and family members, consider seeking professional counseling or support groups, and allow yourself time to process your emotions.

What are some unique ways to honor my loved one's memory?

There are countless ways to celebrate your loved one's life beyond traditional funeral services. Consider planting trees or flowers in their memory, creating a memory book or scrapbook, making charitable donations in their name, or participating in activities that were meaningful to them.

Can I reprint an obituary at a later date?

In most cases, yes! If you want to reprint an obituary at a later date (e.g., on the anniversary of their passing), you can contact the original publication or platform for permission. They may have specific guidelines or requirements for reprints.

How do I preserve my loved one's digital legacy?

In today's digital age, our online presence can be just as important as our physical one. Consider preserving your loved one's digital legacy by saving emails, messages, photos, and other digital artifacts that tell their story.

What role does technology play in modern-day obituaries?

Technology has revolutionized the way we share information about our loved ones who have passed away. Online platforms have made it easier than ever to publish and share obituaries globally, while also providing tools for creating digital memorials and tributes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should always be respectful, incorporating humor can help showcase your loved one's personality and make the notice more engaging. Just be sure to use discretion when deciding what type of humor is appropriate.

Are there any cultural differences in how obituaries are written?

How do I ensure my loved one's story is told accurately?

To ensure accuracy in telling your loved one's story through their obituary, gather information from multiple sources (e.g., family members, friends), fact-check dates and events, and proofread carefully before submitting the notice for publication.
