Rocco Yervasi - April 15, 1929 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Tucker)
Obituary Preview: ROCCO YERVASI, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024 in Stone Mountain, Georgia surrounded by family at the age of 95. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eva Louise (Kiefer) Yervasi, and survived by five children: Nanette Yervasi Holt (Paul), Carina Yervasi, Damien Yervasi (Lisa), Adam Yervasi (Vivian) and Aimée Yervasi. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Hannah Holt, Sam Charney, Dominic Yervasi, Sophia Yervasi, Lucien Yervasi, Jonathan Yervasi, Zachary Yervasi, Eli Orcutt, Nate Orcutt, and Aidan Orcutt.
Born on April 15, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, Rocco was the son of immigrant parents from Italy and grew up during the Great Depression. As a school aged boy, he helped with his parent’s fruit and vegetable store, ran errands and played stick ball while trying to finish his homework. In high school, he spent much of his free time drawing, studying and perfecting his sign and show card lettering. For high school, he attended The School of Industrial Arts to hone his love of artistic design. He worked for an advertising agency after graduating and on Saturdays continued his art studies at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, The Arts Student League, and the Pratt Institute.
In 1951, he enlisted and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he stayed in California to pursue art school. He studied at Immaculate Heart College under the instruction of Corita Kent and then finished his art education at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design now known as the ArtCenter. He loved to regale his family with his adventures of eating burritos, camping on Rattlesnake Hill between California and Mexico, and hitchhiking across the United States - more than once. A budding expert of advertising art, conceptualizing ad campaigns, and packaging and exhibit design, Rocco felt it was “time to go to work.” On this path, he met and married the love of his life, Eva Louise Kiefer, in 1962. Being a man of principle and action, he traveled to Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963 to participate in Martin Luther King Jr’s. famous March on Washington only to be called home a day and half later to welcome his first child who arrived three weeks early. Together, he and Eva had five children of whom he was very proud and who embraced his Italian heritage wholeheartedly.
After a brief book store business venture in Connecticut with Eva and two young daughters, he moved to New York and secured a position in the Corporate Design Department at Xerox Corporation. Six years at Xerox, two sons and another daughter later, he was hired by the Eastman Kodak Company in the Research Laboratories for their Learning Systems Labs designing interesting and colorful elementary math courses for microfiche film. In the midst of these careers, he designed the family house that became affectionately known as the Frog Pond by everyone who visited. He finished his career at Kodak as the Director of Marketing Communications for Business Information Systems and retired in 1991, but kept his love of advertising design alive through freelance work.
As a father, he loved making popcorn for his children on Sunday nights during the wonderful World of Disney and reluctantly shared his red pistachios. His Saturday morning pancakes, refrigerator cleanouts and stuff-it-in-a-pita shell breakfasts were legendary. He also amazed his family by cooking gourmet breakfasts outside on the grills in Webster Park. Vacations left indelible impressions on his children—Black Lake, Foreman’s Park, SeaWorld and Disney. He played all kinds of games and was difficult to beat. He taught his family his favorite Italian card games - Briscola and Scupa. And he gleefully stifled his children’s skepticism by leaving sooty footprints on Christmas Eve from the hearth to the tree.
Wherever he and Eva lived, they warmly welcomed strangers, neighbors, friends and family—surrounding them with delicious food, humor and comfort. He moved to Park Springs in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 2011, after Eva’s passing in 2010. He found a new community of like-minded friends who shared his love of art, design, good food and fine wine. He was a wonderful neighbor, an excellent cook, a man of humor, a proud father and a loyal husband. It was a great run. In his own words: I CAME I LEARNED I LIVED I LOVED I LEFT — TO JOIN
EVA LOUISE.

Charles Melvin Allen - March 10, 1930 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Tucker)
Obituary Preview: Charles Melvin Allen was born on a young spring day in 1930. He died peacefully at his home in Tucker, Georgia on April 7, 2024, shortly after his 94th birthday. He was also known as Charlie, Mel, Samps and for the last 30 or so years, Papa to his 4 grandchildren. He was born and raised in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He first wandered away to serve in the Navy. He served mostly in California spending time at Moffett Field, in what is now Silicon Valley, and later in San Diego on the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge. He did not see combat, but nevertheless had more adventures than was prudent.
Coming home to Tullahoma, he courted and married Helen Lois Ray and quickly taught her the proper role of a passenger on various Harley Davidson, Indian and Triumph motorcycles that passed through his life. He began work with the Army Corps of Engineers at Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma. Charlie stayed with the Corps for his entire career, hopscotching across Florida as a construction engineer building post offices, airports and a variety of government projects. He took his family for a five-year tour in the Republic of Panama and closed his career with his wife, Helen, in Riyad, Saudi Arabia. The foreign postings and their retirement years found them wandering the globe together often and earnestly. During the final week of his life, someone asked him how long he and Helen had been married. He paused briefly and just said softly “not long enough.” They were married 66 years.
Charlie passed his retirement years traveling with his wife and friends. He was a regular golfer at his beloved Ft. McPherson Golf Club. He was not a believer in idle hands and was constantly at work on some project. He roofed, painted, installed new floors, repaired, built a barn, two porches and dabbled in plumbing, electrical work. He was known in his neighborhood of Lake Ivanhoe as someone who could help you build a playhouse, close in a garage, rewire your light fixture, or just fix some things. He repaired cars, motorcycles, washing machines, furniture etc. with only a modicum of colorful language. He was always available to help.
Charlie was the second of three boys born to Roy Lee Allen and Clara Aileen Shasteen. He is preceded in death by his wife Helen. His older brother Roy Joseph (Florence) also preceded him in death along with his parents. He was survived by his brother Gerald (Mary Ann) Allen of Tullahoma and his dear sister-in-law Kathy Ray of Atlanta, GA. He took care of her over the years and she took care of him, often by talking to him and asking endless and probing questions. He is also survived by his cherished 1975 Harley-Davidson FLH 1200 Electra Glide.
Charlie and Helen raised three boys, Gary Brent Allen, of Loganville, Georgia, Randall Lee (Mary Lou Montagne) Allen, of Brookhaven Georgia, and Jay Matthew Allen, of McDonough, Georgia. Beginning in 1987, Charlie became Papa with the entry of his grandchildren Randall Lee Allen, Jr., Charleston, South Carolina; Claire Montagne (Sam Melamed) Allen, San Francisco, California; Shelby Raye (Kody Lassiter) Allen, Monroe, Georgia; and Margaux Elizabeth Allen, Athens, Georgia.
A memorial gathering in Charlie’s hometown of Tullahoma, Tennessee is currently being arranged.

She went on to earn a PhD in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin.

Suzie’s academic career began in the departments of Surgery and Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was one of Dr. Michael Debakey’s first scientific collaborators on the artificial heart project. Her work focused on studying the response of vascular endothelial cells to the physical forces associated with blood flow. This work brought her together with Larry V. Pat Besson Swan - August 08, 1936 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Tucker)
Obituary Preview: Pat Besson Swan (1936 – 2024) of Lilburn, Georgia, passed away in the morning of March 26, 2024, surrounded by her daughters. She died at Northside Gwinnett Hospital after complications from a fall following a fight with leukemia. She was energetic and independent until her last day.
Throughout her life Pat was unselfishly committed to improving the lives of women and children, especially through health services and education. This resonated in her professional work and in her volunteer activity.
Pat had healing in her hands and heart. She worked as a registered nurse throughout her life, maintaining her nursing license even through retirement. She began her nursing career in the OB/GYN department at Talmadge Memorial Hospital in Augusta. Starting in the 1970s, after a break to raise her children, she worked for over 25 years as an RN in Intermediate ICU at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.
Although she loved being a nurse, her passion was in her volunteer work. For 57 years, Pat was a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Her lifelong service found her in positions at all levels. She served as State Director of Junior Clubs (1980-1982), State President of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs (1996-1998), Southern Region President of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (2008-2010), all while remaining active in her local club in Lilburn.
Her volunteer service extended to many areas. Where she found a need, she found a mission. In the 1970s, she was instrumental in the DeKalb Junior Women’s Club to start a program which later became the statewide, nonpartisan, non-profit organization called Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia, on whose board she continued to serve for many years. Moved by the challenges of families, like her own, who were touched by cancer diagnoses, she volunteered for many years at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Decatur, GA. She performed many tasks behind the scenes, but her favorite was decorating the Lodge for Christmas.
Whenever asked, she stepped up. Her voice advocated throughout the community and even in the state Capitol. She sat on multiple advisory boards, including Gwinnett Senior Leadership, the Cancer Auxiliary, Gwinnett Department of Family and Children, and the Hutchens Art Center, to name only a few.
Pat’s friends often described her as funny, smiling, and full of life. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 50 years, a source of many lifelong friendships.
When she was not helping others, she was cheering on her favorite teams – the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs. In those moments when she did rest, she enjoyed being in and around the water, whether poolside or at the beach with the sand between her toes. Pat grew up in Louisiana, the second child of six. She attended Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she received her nursing degree. Soon after graduation she married Jerry Swan, who always said, “She was the prettiest girl I ever saw, and she still is.”
Pat leaves behind many friends and family who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jerry L. Swan, Sr., her two sons, Jerry Swan, Jr., and Bryan Swan, and two siblings, brother Clyde Besson and sister Florence Foreman. She is survived by her two daughters and two beloved grandsons: daughter Shannon Swan Sapp of Destin, Florida, and her son Taylor Sapp, and daughter Dr. Deanne W. Swan of Springfield, Virginia, and her son Linus Gagne; and by three sisters: Juanita Massey, Mabel Case, and Gladys Sims.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at Church on Main in Snellville, Georgia.

Donald David Waller - July 18, 1935 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Tucker)
Obituary Preview: Don Waller, 88, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on March 4, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family who prayed, sang worship songs and comforted him through the last hours of his journey home. Don was born July 18, 1935, in Atlanta, GA to Lee Morgan and Westelle Waller. He graduated from Brown High School and promptly married the love of his life Frances (Fran) Harwell Waller.  They were blessed with 6 children in 9 years,
and celebrated 70 wonderful years of marriage in September, 2023. They moved to Dunwoody in 1966, where Don owned-operated the Gulf Service Station on Roswell Road. He worked tirelessly, 6 days a week for over 25 years, to support their 6 children: Donna(Rusty)Schuster, David(Nancy)Waller, Angela Batzle, Kathy(Mark)Raines, Anthony(Sara)Waller and Paul(Kimberly)Waller and infant son Joseph who died in utero.  The family continued to grow, adding 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren who were his pride and joy!
Don was a founding member of the Stone Mountain Barbershop Chorus and was often called upon to use his beautiful tenor voice for weddings, funerals, and church events.  He loved performing and we were so proud of him. Don will be remembered for his warm smile, strong handshake, bear hugs, roaring laughter and the delightful way he would light up at the sight of his kids, grands and greats. The love and dedication to his wife, family and Catholic faith served as the foundation for his life. He and Fran were generous, gracious, and never hesitated to help anyone. Our home was a refuge for priests, exchange students, friend’s cars waiting on free repair, neighborhood kids and pets. We saw God provide in more ways than we could count. Although dementia stole recent memories, his ability to recall the past was uncanny. He could tell many funny stories about his sons and their antics at his station in the late 70’s. No shortage of fun and games with 6 kids around!
Don is survived by beloved wife and constant companion, Fran, who will miss him terribly, but is grateful for God’s tender mercy and perfect timing.
“Well done good and faithful servant, Don Waller.”  Matthew 25:21 We believe our dad was the hardest working, dedicated, honest, fair and grateful man we have ever known. Dad, thank you for your legacy of love, laughter, faith and trust.  What a blessing and honor to be counted among those you love. ”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.“ 2 Tim 4:7 Please join us for a celebration of Life Mass Wednesday,
March 13, 2024 at 11:00am at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Tucker GA.

The train was later taken home for the children in his

their many accomplishments. Mike is survived by his wife, Mariela, daughter Laura, and grandchildren Alexandra, Jason and Tyler.  Sadly, he is preceded in death by his daughters Rebecca and Christine. Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the Georgia Alzheimer’s
