Karen Ruth Doeden - January 19, 1942 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Worthington)
Obituary Preview: Karen Ruth (Tiedtke) Doeden, 82, of Worthington, MN, was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on April 24, 2024. Karen’s faith in Christ sustained her throughout her days. She served God and others wholeheartedly. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Hahn officiating on April 27, 2024 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN with visitation preceding the service from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Karen was born in Norfolk, NE, on January 19, 1942, to Harry and Ruth (Luebcke) Tiedtke. She grew up on the family farm east of Battle Creek, NE. She was baptized, her faith was formed, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1959. She went on to graduate from the Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha, NE, with a Secretarial degree.
Karen married Daryl Doeden on September 24, 1966, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, NE. They were blessed with two daughters, Amy and Sarah. Karen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandma. She was selfless, loving, patient and generous.
Karen worked for Armour and Company in Omaha, NE, as a Calculating Machine Operator from 1959-1964. In 1964 she moved to Worthington, MN, and worked for Armour and Company as a Stenographer-Accounting Clerk from 1964-1970. She then chose to stay home to raise her two daughters. She returned to work at Armour and Company as an Accounting Clerk from 1978-1983. In 1984 she began working as a Clerical worker for Worthington Freezer Warehouse where she worked until March 3, 2006, when she retired on the same day as her husband, Daryl.
Karen was incredibly kind and had a servant’s heart. A woman of quiet strength and devotion, Karen’s loving Christian example helped those around her grow their faith simply by being in her presence and interacting with her. She spoke God’s truth, knew scripture well, and led by example in all that she did. Her greatest goal in life was that all her family and friends would know Jesus and join her in Heaven someday. She said at age 9 she wanted to be a missionary and although she was never formally one, she spent her life sharing Jesus with everyone. She would ask, “If you were to die today, do you know you would go to heaven?” and “If you stand before Christ and he asked, ‘Why should I let you in heaven?’ what would you say?” Her loving response was, “You must know Jesus Christ as your Savior on earth.”
She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. This included Bible studies, mission sewing, LWML, teaching Sunday School for over 30 years, and many church activities. Her mission sewing group sent countless quilts worldwide through Orphan Grain Train. She loved connecting with missionaries through Mission Central. During her life, she enjoyed square dancing with the Turkey Trotters, camping, biking, volunteering, helping at the food shelf and going to her children’s and grandchildren’s events and activities.
Karen had a welcoming spirit and used food to connect with and minister to people and meet their needs. She loved to cook and bake and is known for having made angel food cakes for her family and friends to show her love.
Karen loved her family and is survived by her daughters Amy (Steven) Dirks (Sioux City, IA) and Sarah (Mark) How (Audubon, MN); seven grandchildren Joshua (Megan) Dirks, Emily (Ryan) Harter, Olivia Dirks, Kalob How, Justin How, Chloe How, and Lydia How; two great-grandchildren, Garner Dirks and Charlotte How; her sister Janice (Tiedtke) Hitz; sister-in-law, Jean Tiedtke; Aunt Lois (Luebcke) Kilgore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Daryl, parents Harry and Ruth Tiedtke, brother Kenneth Tiedtke, and great-granddaughter Iyla Dirks.

Mary Jane Voehl - July 07, 1933 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Worthington)
Obituary Preview: Mary Jane Voehl, age 90, of Worthington, MN, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024.
Born on July 7, 1933, Mary Jane lived her entire adult life in/near Worthington. Following graduation from Worthington High School, Mary Jane enrolled at Worthington Community College, and shortly after starting her classes was recruited to work as Clerk of Court at the Nobles County Courthouse, where she was employed for five years. She and her husband Lorence (Larry) were married, moved north of Worthington and had three children.
Growing up on a farm near Bigelow, Minnesota, prepared her well for country living as an adult. Mary Jane always maintained huge gardens and her freezers were filled with beautiful fruits and vegetables, as well as the 100 chickens she raised and dressed each summer. Anyone who was fortunate to be the beneficiary of her cinnamon and caramel rolls was lucky and slightly euphoric. She was an expert seamstress and sewed everything from indestructible Halloween costumes to prom dresses to wedding gowns. During summer months she was often seen biking around town with her best buddy Joan Roos, sporting cotton shorts and no helmets on their single-speed Schwins. There is no question that her grandchildren were her greatest loves, but she was a happy girl when she could hop in the car with her sister Rona and head to a Duplicate Bridge tournament anywhere in the Midwest. She achieved Bronze Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League, the measure of achievement in duplicate bridge competition. She counts among her favorite memories the many dear friends she made, and sitting at a table with and holding her own against Bill Gates and Warren Buffet (who she said were the nicest guys). She also greatly enjoyed playing Scrabble, and showed no mercy in beating any opponent with the nerve to play with her. Dogs and horses had a special place in her heart – to be a dog of hers was a wonderful thing. Bridget, Buster, Oreo were all well cared for!
Mary Jane has been a believer in Jesus Christ her entire life, and she raised her children and grandchildren to know the Lord as their Savior. For decades she was very active at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild and teaching Release Time. Her love language was sharing delicious food to anyone who crossed her path – and especially those in her life who were grieving the loss of a loved one. She was truly a life-long servant to her friends and family.
Mary Jane is preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and daughter in-law Linette Voehl. She is survived by her children, Courtney, Kristen Johnson (Thomas), Randall (Linda), and Deanna Voehl. She has 9 grandchildren – Amanda (Steven), Connor, Guy (Leia), Rosanna (Adam), Isabel (Thomas), Casey (Erica), Rachel (Dustin), Mason (Sarah,) Haley (Addison), and 14 great-grandchildren – Emma, Hannah, Alton, Bray, Bryn, Boden, Beck, Lo, Poppy, Oceane, Liam, Jaden, Gracie and Martha, and two sisters – Rona Krueger and Cheryl (Denny) Bonsma, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m., at American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Anne M. Hokenstad officiating. Food and gathering will follow the service. Private family burial will be held prior to the service in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Marvin "Marv" George Rall - August 18, 1933 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Worthington)
Obituary Preview: Marvin George Rall was born August 18, 1933 in Forbes ND to Christian and Frederika Rall. He passed through the gates of heaven peacefully at Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington MN on February 18, 2024 at the age of 90, just 3 short months after his wife Arlene passed away. Marv had a tough couple months after Arlene died but his last days were very peaceful and without pain as he was able to visit with, joke a little and say goodbye to many family members and friends who took the time to make his last days memorable.
Marv graduated from Forbes High School in 1951. After graduation Marv enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in July 1956. On January 10, 1957, Marv married Arlene Bender in Leola SD. The couple farmed for a year before relocating to SD.
While working full time and raising their children, Marv enrolled in college in Ellendale ND at State Normal and Industrial College where he received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts in 1959. He taught at Hosmer and Redfield SD as a shop teacher for the next 6 years. After Arlene finished her nursing degree they relocated to Roscoe SD where Marv served as school superintendent until 1971. At that time the family moved to Laramie Wyoming. A lifetime learner, Marv studied and received his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Wyoming in 1973.
In 1973, Marv and Arlene packed up their 4 children one last time and moved back to the Midwest and bought a home in Worthington MN that they’ve lived in for the past 50 years. Marv created and directed Prairie Lakes Vocational Center in Worthington MN for several years before he changed careers and sold Harvester for 6 years. In 1984 he started an Insurance and Investment business in Worthington that his son Scott now operates.
A proud American, Marv loved his God, his family, and his country. He was so very proud when some of his grandchildren and nephews joined the Armed Forces and there were many hearty discussions about the merits of the Army verses the Marines verses the Air Force as the family would gather at the Outpost property and enjoy God’s creation under the display of military flags. One of Marv’s proud accomplishments was his role in developing the beautiful Freedom Shore Park honoring veterans on the South shore of Lake Okabena in Worthington.
Marv’s other well-known passion was his love of woodworking. He was his happiest when he was working on a project in his beloved shop or sharing his craft with fellow woodworkers. In addition to woodworking, it was common knowledge around town and with the family that if you needed something fixed, Marv was the guy to go to- he could fix anything, and once it was fixed, it would last forever! Marv’s woodworking projects included thousands of wood toys that he and his woodworking buddies built in the shop. These toys were distributed to Toys for Tots and other nonprofit programs in Worthington. One of Marv’s toys was found in the children’s area of the hospice cottage with his stamp from 1996. When showed the toy, Marv smiled and said, “we made a lot of kids happy over the years”.
Many organizations benefited from Marv’s talents and willingness to help, not the least of which is the Pheasants Forever Chapter where he created over 60 signs that you can see on habitat property all around Nobles County. In addition, he contributed to PF many beautiful silent auction projects over the years. Marv also dedicated many hours to the American Legion in Worthington and was especially proud of the building expansion project he directed at American Reformed Church.
Marv often spoke fondly of his loyal and constant group of friends- the “college of knowledge” Perkins group, the Tuesday “red solo cup” crew and many, many others he was blessed to have in his life. His family was impressed with the number of people who reached out these last couple weeks and months to support their friend.
Marv is survived by his children, McChyne (Judy) of Sioux Falls, SD, Scott (Joane) of Worthington MN, Kelli (Clair) Van Grouw of Worthington MN; seven grandchildren, Brandon Rall, Brittany (Mark) Remme; Katie (Neil) Barnack; Sam Rall; Hannah (Chris) Huls, Mallory (Lance) Zell, Jacob (Tara) Van Grouw; 13 greatgrandchildren- Melanie and Morgan Rall, Ben and Alex Remme, Harper and Callie Huls, Thor, Athena and Hara Zell, Westlyn and Maverick Van Grouw, Lucas and Archer Barnack; brother Lawrence (Betty) Rall and sister Corrine (Marlin) Henjum as well as sister in laws Darlene Bender, Jean Bender and Lea Bender and a host of nieces and nephews.
Marv was preceded in death by his wife Arlene, daughter Lorry Beth, parents Christian and Frederika Rall, and brother Melvin Rall.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 5:00 -7:00 pm, at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Funeral services will be at American Reformed Church in Worthington, MN on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 11:00 am.
