Obituary Preview: Linda Ruth Jenkins Ward, 80, of Conover passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, May 17,2020 in Granite Falls.
She was born January 3, 1940 in Catawba County to the late John Franklin Jenkins and Ruth Louise Price Jenkins. Never a dull moment, Linda lived a full life filled with camping adventures and artistic pursuits. Always wearing a smile, she never met a stranger and always had a warm welcome for anyone she was fortunate to even run into. One of Linda’s favorite hobbies included mixed media painting. She loved to repurpose items and add life to them either through a complete redo or a fresh coat of paint. As a camper at Brown Mountain Beach Campground she spent her weekends on the shore of Wilson Creek. Singing in the campground band and jam sessions by the fire ensured her love of camping and music was transferred to her family. Linda was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover for over 50 years. In that time she served God by heading up the acolytes, served as a member of the mad hatters women’s group and sang in the choir. She was a cosmetology instructor at various cosmetology schools in the Hickory area and retired from Caldwell Community College. Linda will be remembered for her zest for life and her love of family. Vicki was born February 14, 1948 in Newton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late James Thomas McConnell and Betty Shook McConnell. Vicki graduated from Newton-Conover High School and attended Lees McRae College.
In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Gertrude McConnell and Paul and Floy Shook and nephew, Joseph Martin McConnell. Vicki was a member of First United Methodist Church, Newton. She retired from the marketing department at Duke Energy after 33 years of service.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 38 years, James “Jim” Franklin Yount; son, Jason McConnell Yount of the home; one brother, James Kenneth “Kenny” McConnell, and wife, Vickie Hunsucker McConnell; a nephew, James Bradford “Brad” McConnell; great niece, Peyton Elizabeth McConnell and great nephew, Joseph (Joey) McConnell.
A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Newton with Rev. Laura “Willis” Greene officiating.
The family will receive friends in the Gomedela Room at the church from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., prior to the service.

Obituary Preview: Sandra Berning Douglas, 76, formerly of Amsterdam, NY and Fort Johnson, NY passed away on Monday, November 18, 2019 at Carolina Caring of Sherrills Ford with her loving family at her side.
She was born October 10, 1943 in Amsterdam, NY to the late Roy and Doris Van Dyke Berning. Sandy graduated from the former Wilber H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She worked at various locations in Amsterdam, including Amsterdam High School and The Present Company. Sandra formed deep friendships with many of her co-workers. She moved to Florida following the passing of her husband. While there, she volunteered at a local animal shelter where her love for animals became her passion. Sandy fostered and saved hundreds of animals and loved every minute of it. When her health declined, she moved to Maiden, NC to be closer to her family. While there, she enjoyed spending quality time with her family and being in NASCAR country. Sandy loved the view from her living room picture window where she could take in her beloved mountain view and the various wildlife that made her yard their home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Bernard “Tom” Douglas; brother, Bill Berning; three best friends, Jackie Rembert, Ruth Arnold, and Nancy Salmon and many fur babies. Those left to cherish her memory are; Son: Bruce Douglas and wife Michele of Concord Daughter: Melissa Chester and husband Kenny of Denver Brother: John Berning and wife of Eva of Marion
Various nephews, nieces, cousins and others who loved her.

She and Frank settled in Newton after his return. She worked at Knitmode for many years, then Klopman Mills, then Bassett. In her retirement, she was an avid volunteer in Catawba County and loved to travel. She traveled across the United States, North and South America, China to Australia, and in Europe. Eunice was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Frank Joseph Gutyar; grandson, Greg Spurling; brothers, Bain, Edwin and Warren Scronce; sisters, Mary Kate McCaslin, Stella Kirby, Mabel Walsh and Ruby Scronce.
