Charles Nicholas Schirra - July 12, 1949 - September 04, 2022

Departed: 09/04/2022 (Powhatan)
Obituary Preview: Charles “Chuck” Nicholas Schirra, born on July 12, 1949, died peacefully in the arms of his wife on September 4, 2022. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Francis Raymond and Marie Henrietta Schirra; his brother, Francis Raymond Schirra Jr.; and his sister Rebecca Marie Bottoms. Chuck placed service to others above all things in his professional and personal life. This service to others was done in every spare moment with utmost humility. His family is learning this as they hear stories from those he helped as they offer their condolences. Truly the only thanks Chuck ever needed was knowing that his friends and neighbors were taken care of.
Senior Chief Petty Officer (Ret.) Schirra proudly served in the United States Navy for 26 years and received the Navy Marine Corps Medal for Heroism early in his career. He continued his passion for service by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Technology Education and taught inner-city children. When he was unable to continue to do so, Chuck pursued his father’s and his passion for bowling by working as first a bowling alley mechanic, then alley manager, and finally national level technical support for QubicaAMF. After his retirement he continued to find ways to assist in his local community personally and in larger organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Chuck also cared deeply about his faith. He served as an Altar Boy and a Eucharistic Minister until he died, and later in life became on Oblate of St. Benedict. While in the Navy his chaplain called him “his little deacon.” He often spent time bringing the Most Holy Eucharist to the sick and invalids in the community to ensure everyone who wanted to receive the Blessed Sacrament weekly could. On a personal level, he cultivated prayer in his family through daily Rosaries and always blessed them before they went to bed or left the home with a simple, “God Bless and Protect You.”
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Catherine Anne Schirra; three sons: Peter Francis Schirra and his wife Brittany, Charles William Schirra and his fiancée Jeanna, and Thomas Andrew Schirra; a daughter, Catherine Nichole Schirra; and grandson Frederick Cleveland Schirra.
Funeral services will be at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Powhatan, VA. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 16th, from 6-7 p.m. followed by a Vigil Service (Wake). The Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, September 17th, at 11 a.m. with a Rosary prayed beforehand at 10 a.m. The Rite of Committal (Internment) will be in the St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s columbarium on October 8th at 11 a.m.

Janet Mason Mikionis - October 20, 1955 - August 27, 2022

Departed: 08/27/2022 (Powhatan)
Obituary Preview: Janet Mason Mikionis of Powhatan, VA, transitioned peacefully from this life to the next on August 27th, 2022, while surrounded with love from her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Mason Perry and Eleanor Rae Jones Perry, and her brother, Jason. Janet will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Ken; children: Kevin, Jessi (Christopher) and Brent (Brittney); grandchildren: Hadley, Beau, Cole, and Chase; her siblings: Susan, Dana, Lisa, and Matthew; as well as numerous other close relatives and friends.
Born and raised in Stafford County, VA, Janet spent as much of her childhood as possible outside helping her father in the garden, playing in the creeks, and riding her beloved pony, Sugarfoot. Janet was a natural beauty; however, her best attributes were her confidence and her strong will. She always stood up for herself and for others and cared deeply for her family and friends.
A graduate of Stafford County High School in 1974, she went on to study education at Mary Washington College and later transferred to Virginia Tech to earn her bachelor’s degree in education in 1978. She started her teaching career at Drew Middle School in Stafford County, VA and continued to teach elementary school in Westfield, NJ. When her children were young, she taught preschool at Salisbury Presbyterian and Mount Pisgah Methodist in Midlothian, VA. It is certain that she changed many children’s lives with her enthusiasm and creativity in the classroom.
While on summer break from teaching school, Janet met her husband, Ken. Ken and Janet shared a love of the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, camping, and playing recreational softball together. They were married on June 28, 1980, at Aquia Episcopal Church. They would share 42 wonderful years together, building a beautiful family along the way.
Janet’s greatest accomplishment in life were her three children, Kevin, Jessi, and Brent. Together, Janet and Ken instilled in their children kindness, strength, and most importantly, love. Janet always cherished the simple things in life and loved country living, horses, dogs, hummingbirds, sweet tea, and porch swinging. All her children will miss swinging on the porch swing with her, talking and laughing, while her horse “Snuffy” would be grazing in the pasture with her beloved dog “Mellie Mae” laying close by. Those were special moments and memories that will be cherished forever. She was also blessed to be “Meme” to four precious grandchildren. In her last few years on this earth, her grandchildren brought her the most joy.
Janet had a heart like a wildflower - beautiful, fierce, and free. She provided comfort to many while asking little in return. Although she left us too soon, those of us who were blessed to be touched by her understand that the imprint she left on our hearts lives on forever.
Janet loved all animals and in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Old Dominion Humane Society (https://www.olddominionhumanesociety.org/donate) or Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center (http://ldequestrian.com/donate/) .
The funeral service will be held at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, Midlothian, Va., at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 10th. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends and share remembrances at Hope Tree Farm, 2016 Cartersville Road, Cartersville, VA 23027.
