Jack A Long - July 28, 1934 - September 15, 2018

Departed: 09/15/2018 (Martin)
Obituary Preview: Jack Long resident of Martin, SD passed away on September 15, 2018 at Fort Meade Community Center Hospice, Sturgis, SD at the age of 84 years.
Jack was born to Keith “Shorty” and Mae Long on July 28, 1934 in Thurston, Nebraska. Sometime later the family moved to Harrington, SD. There Jack attended school and helped on the family farm.
On February 2, 1955, he enlisted in the army and served until January 25, 1957.
After marring Phyllis Lyon on June 14, 1962, he made his home in Vetal. Raising cattle and helping neighbors with farming. While living in Vetal, Jack was instrumental in helping develop the Vetal Volunteer Fire Department.
In 1969, the Jack Long family of 5 moved to a farm east of Martin, where he continued to reside until his passing. Jack raised cattle, horses, hogs, sheep, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, kids and grandkids. Among the crops he farmed were wheat, corn, barley, oats, millet and alfalfa. Some of Jack’s favorite past times were watching old TV shows (westerns) and baseball. Go Yankees! He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. You could not be around him long without finding out that he loved to play pitch, talk politics, and tell stories. He was always up for playing a joke on someone or just being plain ornery. Occasionally this backfired on him, on one such occasion he was teasing 4 year old Marie who swung a 2 liter pop bottle around and gave him a black eye. He also found great joy in seeing if he could find out gifts under the tree. Because of this his children quickly learned you didn’t tell Norma. He could get her to tell him every time. If you were around Jack very long you could hear him tell a child, “Hurry up before I give you a quarter.”
He loved his grandchildren but he had one who taught him a lesson about keys and kids. One day as he was checking on some hogs his granddaughter Reba decided she was big enough to drive. She started the truck and went for a short drive. This brought grandpa running and opening the door causing her to scamper to the other side of the truck. After this the keys would be “hidden” from her. That didn’t stop her. When the keys were not in their normal hiding spot Reba would find them and put them where they belonged. This caused the adults to be anxiously looking for the keys. When asked if she knew where they were she would calmly pull them from the hiding spot.
Jack and his grandson, Austin Thayer, were nearly inseparable. Austin will carry on the legacy of farming that he learned at the side of his grandpa.
Jack will be sadly missed by his children: Debbie(Richard) Taylor of Greenfield, OH, Gary Long(Rowena Cruz) of Valentine, NE, Helen(Keith) Stehlik of Vetal, SD, Carol Shepler of Valentine, NE and Mickie (Veldon)Thayer of Martin, SD, his grandchildren; Nathaniel(Annalisa) Taylor, Angela Cruz, Reba Stehlik, Nolan(Joya) Taylor, Amanda Holcomb, Tanya Stehlik, Sean Shepler, Austin Thayer, Jackie Thayer, and Naomi Thayer, and great grandchildren, Robert Taylor, Holly Stehlik, Riggen Holcomb, Eliana Taylor and Tayah Holcomb, His sisters: Margie Judd of Chandler, AZ, and Judy Meyer of Alliance, NE and one brother Arnie Long of Gillette, WY and a sister-in-law Jeanie Long of Martin, SD.
He was predeceased in death by his parents: Keith “Shorty” and Mae (Merchen) Long, brothers: Ronald, Donald, and Marvin, and his daughter: Norma Orr.
Funeral Service for Jack A. Long age 84 of Martin will be held on Saturday September 22, 2018 at 10:00 am, in the American Legion Auditorium in Martin with Rev. Bill Hines officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM (MDT) in the Winner City Cemetery, Winner, SD.

Raymond Greenough - October 04, 1931 - September 10, 2017

Departed: 09/10/2017 (Martin)
Obituary Preview: Raymond Greenough, eldest son of Marjorie (Dale) and Oscar Greenough was born at home near Norris, South Dakota on October 4, 1931. He attended schools in the Patricia area and was a 1951 graduate of Bennett County High School.
After graduating, he lived his life as a rancher, except for a few months in Omaha working for a feed company. He spent some of his spare time competing in roping events in rodeos and roping clubs in the area. He helped build the phone line in the Patricia area. He loved his work and always felt so lucky to be able to make his living doing what he loved. One source of great satisfaction to him was seeing young people get into and succeed in ranching.
On October 3, 1960, Raymond and Joan Livermont were married and moved seven miles north of Vetal, which was their home for the next 57 years. A big bonus was the addition of daughter Denise, and son John to their family.
During that time, Raymond was a member of the Vetal Fire Department serving for a few years as fire chief, served on the Bennett County Co-op board, the weed board, the local school board, the FHA board, was a brand inspector, and enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Martin Auction Café.
He and Joan took time to travel and some of his favorites were the Pendleton Rodeo in Oregon, an Alaskan Cruise, the Balloon Fest in Albuquerque, a riverboat cruise while in New Orleans, Mackinaw Island, and the locks between the Great Lakes, plus a New England fall foliage trip. He enjoyed seeing the varying farm and ranch practices in other parts of the United States and meeting people. He always liked visiting with others, but as his hearing deteriorated (even with hearing aids) he found it hard to carry on conversations, so for the past few years, he stayed home more and more.
His favorite place was always their ranch in Bennett County. His intention was to live there his entire life, but due to a brain tumor that was discovered following an ATV accident on the ranch, it was necessary for him to move to the Bennett County Hospital and later the Bennett County Nursing Home. He passed away on Sunday, September 10 at the Bennett County Hospital.
He is survived by his wife Joan of Martin, daughter Denise (Ed) Pauly of Rapid City, son John (Kim) Greenough of Johnstown, Colorado, two granddaughters Rachel Pauly Kroeger and her husband Robert Kroeger, and Rebbecca Rae Pauly all of Rapid City, and a special step-grandson Andrew (Emily) Burks of Colorado, a brother Bill (Norma) Greenough of Oelrichs and a sister Donna Greenough of Martin. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Jesse Greenough, and two sisters, LaVerne Clem and Barbara Sears.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 15, 2017, 10:00 AM at the Martin American Legion, Martin, SD, with burial to be held at the Martin Community Cemetery.

She was very active in the Presbyterian Church throughout her life. She first taught through the Presbyterian Mission at the Ganado, AZ Navajo School. Soon after, she trained to do mission work at Presbyterian Churches in Cuba but she did not make it to Cuba as a result of the Castro rise and ended up coming to South Dakota. Initially Ardeth worked with a group assisting vacation Bible Schools at Presbyterian Churches in Tuthill and Martin, and was hosted by the Bennett County Superintendent of Schools, Dorothy Rice. Shortly thereafter she was offered a teaching position in Bennett County High School, permanently moving to Martin in 1953. Around that time she met and married Frank Kocourek Jr. They moved to the farm purchased from his parents in western Bennett County where they lived for many years. Ardeth continued to operate the farm for several years after Frank passed away and then moved into town in the early 2000s.

She somehow found time to teach piano lessons to many young people in the community and sing in the Community Contata group nearly every year.
In addition to her service to the community, she and Frank ran their 900 acre farm outside Martin and raised their six children. She was truly a strong and independent woman with many talents, a dedicated lifelong teacher, and a servant to our Lord. She will be missed.

Don Nelson - December 24, 1924 - March 25, 2017

Departed: 03/25/2017 (Martin)
Obituary Preview: Donald Myron Nelson, passed away at the Bennett County Nursing Home, Martin SD on March 25th, 2017. Don was born in Comstock, Nebraska, to Dwight and Neeta Nelson, on December 24. 1924. Don was the third of four sons, LaVern, Leonard, Donald, and Gerald. When Don was 6 years old, the family moved to the Martin area in 1930, following other relatives that had previously moved from Comstock to Martin. They started a homestead seven miles west and then north, and began living in a small granary. They lived there for two years then moved south just north of highway 18. Later, another son, Gerald Nelson was born. These were very hard times, and the family worked very hard on the farm working with farming and cattle. The brother’s childhood recreation included sharing of a single bicycle and rolling from the north hill inside of truck tires and hitting the outhouse to stop. One time, Dwight was in the outhouse when all four boys hit the small building in succession, followed by Dwight coming out pulling up his pants; this has always been a favorite family story.
Don attended Swett School, then Bennett County High School, graduating in 1942. Don talked of the many fun, and sometimes mischievous, times during and following high school.
Don joined the U.S. Navy in December 1944 and was soon commissioned to Pearl Harbor in the medical core following the bombing. He had also served in Court A’dlaide, Idaho, and was discharged in San Diego, California in April 1948. Later, following his discharge, Don and Lloyd Prettyman drove to San Diego in a 1932 Dodge to work as welders in the Navy ship yard. Don had told they drove no more than 35 mph and that it took more gallons of oil on the trip than gallons of gasoline.
Later living in Martin, Don married Valerie Dirks on September 10th, 1949. They were always a happy couple and were generally always seen together; it was always Don and Val. Initially they lived in an apartment in Martin west of the theatre. Don had told that they would walk on the snowbank to the second story of the theatre to watch a movie following the blizzard of 1949. Their first son, Myron was born in June 1950 and later their second son, Lyndal was born in October 1951. Don worked in Bennett County and on the farm along with other jobs. The family moved to Los Angeles, California, for a winter and Don worked as a welder again. In moving back to Martin, Don began farming full time and worked to build the family house, beginning with moving into a granary.
The farm was now three independent farming operations with Dwight farming, LaVern farming, and Don Farming on the same home place. They worked together as needed and shared in harvest equipment and operations, including performing local custom harvesting. The life of a farmer was a genuine pride of Don as well as Dwight and LaVern. Don was a very creative and efficient operator in his farming and cattle operations. Although the work week was always very hectic with long hours each day, the family time primarily consisted of weekend boating recreation at the White River project or Angostura Lake, and often shared with other family and friends. Many times working in shifts throughout the week, with Val managing the household, and everyone working to keep two tractors in operation for 24 hours a day so the weekend could be available for camping and boating. Although always working hard on the farm, it was absolutely the best loving, caring life a family could ask for.
Don was very active in the American Legion Post 240 in Martin. Don and Val (member of the Legion Auxiliary) had many good times serving the Legion. Don was very proud to have served in the Legion, and as Legion Commander in the 60’s and to have served on the Coop Elevator Board for a number of years. Don was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Martin, and of the Shriners organization.
When Myron and Lyndal were off to college, Don and Val begin spending some of the winter time in Arizona, both enjoying the sunshine and exploring. Very sadly, after a wonderful marriage and partnership of 32 years, Val passed away in October, 1981. Later, in January 1992, Don married Deloris Miller. Don continued to farm, and as a hobby and with his love of animals, had accumulated miniature animals such as Hereford cattle, donkeys, goats, etc. Don later retired in 1991, after farming for 44 years. With the enjoyment of wintering in Arizona, Don, with Deloris, took on the fun and carefree role of snowbirds. Don loved greatly the life of a snowbird. He loved also to “tinker” with cars and had worked to restore a number of cars in Arizona, and in the summers at the farm. They were blessed with many friends in their retirement community in Quartzsite, Arizona. In meeting new people, they would ask Don what he had done for a living. Don simply stated, I was a “professional gambler” for 44 years. People were amazed and asked Dad for more details; in responding, Don said, “Well, I planted 44 wheat crops, and gambled each year that I would be able to have a successful harvest”.
In the late spring of 2014, upon returning from Arizona, Don stated that is had been over 20 years since he has seen snow in South Dakota – simply amazing! In the summer of 2014, Deloris entered the nursing home in Martin, and later pass away in July 2016. During the time Deloris was in the nursing home, Don, as the extremely caring person that he was, visited Deloris for long hours most every day. Don entered the Bennett County Nursing Home in late March 2016, after the many years of hard work, fun times, and dedication to family and friends, and remained there until his calling by our Lord.
Services were held on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the New American Legion in Martin, with Lisa Danielson, Pastor, Lindsey Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating.
