Roberta Annette Teixeira - May 15, 1942 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Brookline)
Obituary Preview: A Life Well Lived, Roberta A. Teixeira’s Obituary
Roberta Annette Teixeira (Furlong) passed away in the early morning hours of April 20th. Robin (as she was known by friends and loved ones), was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 15, 1942, to the proud parents (Late) Robert Furlong and the (Late) Margaret Furlong (Wiggins). As a child Roberta’s family relocated from Chicago to Rensselaer, New York where she was raised with her siblings, all but, the youngest sibling have proceeded her in death: The (Late) Therese Furlong, the (Late) Frances Robinson, the (Late) Alice Furlong, the (Late) Barbara Carter, the (Late) Sheila Furlong, the (Late) Robert Furlong, the (Late) William Furlong , and Roberta’s youngest sister, Carol Mousseau who currently resides in Victoria, BC Canada with husband, Ted.
Roberta received her Bachelor of Arts from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts as well as her master’s degree from Antioch Institution (within Harvard University). Throughout her career she received many accolades and awards for her extensive work. However, the great worth of this woman went far beyond her worldly accomplishments (which were many) but in the rare ability she had in making ANYONE who met her feel special, important and loved. Married to the love of her life, the (Late) Paul Silva Teixeira, their absolute pride and joy was their family. Her daughter and (Late) son-in-law, Kelly Lynne and Johnny Ray Tumlinson, of Kyle, Texas along with Roberta’s grandchildren: Matthew Silva DeCosta, Michaela Tama, and Joseph Grandville Richards. Roberta’s son, Gary Silva and his family – Flavia, and Roberta’s grandsons: Antonio Cruz, Alexander Paul and Ricardo Manuel Teixeira. Roberta was the very heartbeat of her family.
Roberta resided in her family home located in Brookline, Massachusetts. She had a successful career in Microbiology working at great medical institutions such as: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Boston City Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and prior to retiring she was the Clinical Director for Laboratory Services for the Department of Public Health.
In her free time, Roberta loved spending time with her family and friends. In the past, trips included visiting her (Late) niece Cheryl Reidy, husband Bill, spending time with the Reidy family, or traveling alongside her best friend Judy Bernice to places such as Hawaii. Roberta was an accomplished traveler who delighted in traveling to Portugal, Alaska, Cape Verde, Europe and visits to see her daughter, Kelly and beloved son-in-law Johnny in Texas. She had an extensive pottery collection, most of which was made by an artist exclusively for her. Roberta enjoyed Cape Verdean/Morna music, watching a good movie (or TV series), and baking desserts for her neighbors, Mark, Meredith, Kirstin and Brian (who really have been considered extended family members). Great memories were also made with close friend and honorary family member - Sherry Gould and her daughter Julie, along with the Gould family, priceless memories of years gone past.
Everyone who knew Robin was well aware of one of her “biggest” loves - Jasmine (otherwise known to everyone as “Jazzy”), the Frenchie her son Gary adamantly insists she “stole” from him. Jazzy had a very special place in Roberta’s heart, no dog has been better adored. Roberta is survived by various family members, including nieces, nephews (and greats) all of whom she loved dearly. An interesting fact that may not be well-known with regards to Roberta is that her grandfather was Robert Gould Shaw Furlong, who was named after, Robert Gould Shaw, an American officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born into a Boston upper class abolitionist family, he accepted command of the first all-black regiment (the 54th Massachusetts) in the Northeast. Supporting the promised equal treatment for his troops, he encouraged the men to refuse their pay until it was equal to that of the white troops wage. Major Wesley J. Furlong, (Roberta’s great grandfather) survived the battle, while Robert Gould Shaw did not. Major Wesley would later name his only son, Robert Gould Shaw Furlong, in honor of his commanding officer’s memory, ironically, he resided in the same town of Melrose as Roberta’s son, Gary and family,
Friends and family will all attest that Christmas time will ALWAYS be remembered as a time where Paul and Robin (on Christmas Eve), would open the doors of their home and welcome any and all who wanted to come enjoy good food and company, they believed that no one should spend the holiday alone. Much to their surprise (and the delight of all who attended) this became an annual event that continued to future generations. Roberta’s homemade Christmas cookie baskets (that she made sure all guests left with), will never be forgotten. Although Christmas will never be the same, one of Roberta’s favorite expressions (and a way to honor her memory), is for those who loved her, to live lives of “paying it forward” – by showing the same kindness and compassion to others that endeared Robin to all who knew her, in this way, the memory of Roberta’s life will co-exist in the lives of those who knew her – past, present and future.
There will be a visitation service for those who would like to pay their final respects to Roberta on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024 from 4pm-8pm at Bell-O’Dea Funeral Home in Brookline, Massachusetts, followed by a final viewing and funeral procession on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024 at 11:00am. Roberta will be laid to rest alongside her Late husband, Paul at Brookline’s Walnut Hills Cemetery. A luncheon “Celebration of Life” will be held for all wishing to attend at the Hilton Garden Inn’s Punch Bowl Restaurant, in Brookline Massachusetts from 1pm-4pm.
A special thanks to the staff of Life Care Professional Nursing Facility Centers of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, MA for the love, support and devotion they showed Roberta during her short period of time residing there. Our family will always be grateful.

Anthony Cromwell Hill - September 02, 1951 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Brookline)
Obituary Preview: Anthony Cromwell Hill, a treasured journalist, writer, documentarian, and videographer, died suddenly in his home on January 24, 2024 at age 72.
Born at Boston Lying-In Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s) on September 2, 1951, he grew up in Watertown and Cambridge before graduating from Harvard University in 1973 — from which he received a B.A. in American History and Literature. During his years at Harvard, he wrote for The Harvard Crimson, an experience that launched a journalism career that included the Boston Phoenix, The Real Paper, Newsweek, and eventually led to his reporting for and producing segments for The Ten O’Clock News on WGBH. He subsequently produced pieces for WCVB-TV’s (Channel 5) evening magazine show, Chronicle.
His videography career included signature pieces on Martin Luther King Jr., The Paradox of Boston, and John Silber, 7th president of Boston University, Honoring John Silber, which was thoroughly enjoyed by even by the irascible Silber himself. Tony also wrote and directed a feature video film for TV called Return to Glory, as a more authentic historical response to Zwick’s award-winning film Glory, which sought to honor the first African American soldiers (54th Union Regiment) to fight in the Civil War.
A master of the bon mot, with a comprehensive knowledge of music and a winning way with words, he possessed an uncanny sensitivity that led him to discern the hidden essence of a person within minutes of saying “hello.” This innate talent helped him produce scores of documentary interviews with dignitaries and celebrities that included Henry Kissinger, Elie Wiesel, Leonard Nimoy, and Angela Lansbury, to name but a few.
Tony, as he was known to his many friends, came from a family of superbly educated African American intellectuals that boasted a history of firsts: his father, Henry Aaron Hill, who died in 1979, was the first African American Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, and the first African American President of the American Chemical Society, which still honors him every year by giving a scholarship award in his name.
His mother, Adelaide M. Cromwell, a graduate of Smith College, with graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr, and Radcliffe, and was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She co-founded the first African Studies department at Boston University in 1953 and then later founded the African American Studies Program at Boston University in 1969. She was the first African American faculty member to teach at Smith College, Hunter College, and Boston University.
Her aunt Otelia Cromwell was the first African American graduate of Smith College in 1899 and was the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. from Yale University. Tony’s uncle and godfather was Massachusetts Senator Edward W. Brooke III, the first African American to win the Senate since reconstruction.
A resident of Cambridge and, for many years, Martha’s Vineyard, Tony served on the boards of the Boston Lyric Opera, the Commonwealth School, and was an honorary member of Sundance Institute. He leaves behind his long-time companion Vita Paladino, her son Erik along with her many family members, as well as his precious godchild, Zoe Rose Guastella, and many dear friends and classmates. In 2021, while driving his Tesla home from a dinner, he suffered a cardiac arrest to be rescued by a fertility doctor driving behind him in her Tesla. She waved down a Cambridge police officer responding to another call. They broke open the back window to get him out to do CPR. This they did until the paramedics arrived who shocked him twice back to life and got him to Mt. Auburn Hospital where they stabilized him in a medically-induced coma for five days. When asked to what he ascribed the five miracles that led to this stunning return to life — and gave him a future chapter of traveling the world with his beloved Vita — he exclaimed with characteristic droll humor, “Good Christian Living!”

Born in Cambridge, MA, to J. Georges Marc Peter and Helen Mann Peter, he graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School and Harvard College. He attended the two-year program at Dartmouth Medical School and graduated from Harvard Medical School. He trained in pediatrics at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, and Children’s Hospital, Boston, followed by fellowships at the National Institutes of Health and Children’s Hospital. During his lengthy professional career, he witnessed the disappearance of polio myelitis, marked diminution in the cases of measles, and near-elimination of bacterial meningitis. His advocacy for prevention of infectious diseases led to national recognition, respect, and leadership roles.
He was an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), serving on the Committee on Infectious Diseases for 13 years. He was appointed the first full-time editor of the AAP’s highly influential Red Book (Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases), of which he edited five editions. He served on three federal committees: the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, and the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. He was a member of the World Health Organization’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization and a president of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. An elected member of the Society of Pediatric Research, the American Pediatric Society, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, he was also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Committee for the American Memorial Hospital in Reims, France. Peter received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Physician Award of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the AAP Award for Lifetime Contribution to Infectious Diseases Education, and a Special Recognition Award from the US Department of Health and Human Services. At Brown, he was awarded an Emeritus Citation “for 34 years of distinguished service as a teacher, counselor, and scholar.”
Peter was dedicated to his family, often spending summers in Annisquam, traveling, and sailing competitively with family. They traveled frequently to Europe during the early years of his retirement, particularly to Switzerland, where his father was born and grew up, and to the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Devoted to Harvard athletics, Peter managed the Harvard Stadium scoreboard for 29 years. He received the President’s Special Award from the Harvard Club of Boston and was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Varsity Club. He was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox since childhood. He loved competitive sailing, primarily in the one-design Lightning Class, in which he competed for more than 60 years, winning numerous regattas, and sailing in national and international championships. He was awarded the Annisquam Yacht Club’s Smith Trophy “for outstanding achievements in the sport of sailing.” In addition to the AYC, he was a member of the Boston Harvard Club, the Rhode Island Harvard Club, the University Club in Providence, the Niantic Bay Yacht Club, and the Longwood Cricket Club.
Georges Peter was a man of integrity, honor, and distinction, and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Memorial gifts may be made to one of two organizations: Annisquam Yacht Club Sailing and Tennis Program, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for Cape Ann-based children who cannot otherwise afford to attend the AYC Junior Program. Checks can be made out to AYC STP, and mailed to Annisquam Yacht Club, P.O, Box 1266, Gloucester, MA 01930 and should be noted as “in memory of Georges Peter, M.D.” The second organization we would like to receive memorial gifts is Good Shepherd Community Care, 160 Wells Avenue, Newton, MA 02459. Again, “in memory of Georges Peter, M.D.”
A memorial service for Georges will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 12 Noon, at First Parish of Brookline, 382 Walnut St, Brookline.

Laura Denise Kea - February 17, 1954 - January 04, 2024

Departed: 01/04/2024 (Brookline)
Obituary Preview: Laura D. Kea, 69, of Jamaica Plain passed away peacefully at home on January 4, 2024, following a long struggle with uterine cancer, with her beloved life partner, Joe Politch, at her side. Laura was born on February 17, 1954 in Akron, Ohio to George W. and Agnes (Thomas) Kea. She was raised in Campbell, Ohio, near Youngstown, and graduated from Campbell public schools. She is survived by her partner, Joseph Politch, of Boston, a sister, Roberta (Robin) Johnson-Kea, of Akron, a niece, Ta’Tanisha Johnson-Kea and a great niece, Tomi Johnson-Kea, both of Avon Lake, Ohio. Laura was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, Peter Kea.
Laura graduated from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio in 1976, and with the closure of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Campbell Works in 1977, she decided to seek her fortune in Boston following the advice of a close friend and mentor. She immediately fell in love with the area and after working in a number of positions in banking and publishing, Laura began a 37-year career at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Mass General Brigham in 1986 primarily as an administrator for Research Administration and the Institutional Review Board. She was very well liked and served as a mentor, role model and friend to many colleagues especially women and people of color throughout her career.
Laura was a very unassuming and modest person who could surprise you with her sense of humor and take-no-prisoners attitude. However, she had a heart of gold and was a truly great person who would not hesitate to go out of her way to help a friend in need.
Laura had a rich variety of interests and hobbies. She was a passionate needlepointer and was a member of the American Needlepoint Guild. She welcomed her annual trip to the ANG Seminar with her best friend Joan Roguski and managed to attend the seminar in Atlanta last August. In fact, Laura constantly amazed her friends and family with her tenacity and determination to live life to the fullest given her dire diagnosis. Laura was an avid sports fan with a passion for Boston teams but would also watch any major league baseball game--including West Coast games late at night Boston time. She also loved music and had an eclectic taste in music from country and blues to R&B and rock. In addition, she was an inveterate reader and enjoyed traveling. Laura was known for her prodigious memory and had a fervid interest in trivia. Friends and family members would marvel at her recall of events in their lives that even they had long forgotten.
Laura descended from a long line of Black pioneers and activists. Her maternal grandfather, Robert Thomas, who helped raise her, was the first Black firefighter in her hometown. Her paternal great aunt, Salaria Kea, was a nurse and desegregation activist who volunteered in both the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
A memorial service and celebration of Laura’s life will be held at the First Parish in Brookline Unitarian Church, 382 Walnut Street, BROOKLINE on Saturday, February 24 at 1 pm. A repast will follow the service.

It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share memories and stories, and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention funeral service details, charitable donations, or other relevant information.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with input from others who knew them well. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for 100-200 words for a traditional newspaper obituary, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a wonderful way to personalize the obituary and share cherished memories.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline depends on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries can be published immediately, while traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks to print.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

Sometimes it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this may depend on the platform or newspaper's policies. It's essential to review the content carefully before submission.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to the obituary and reflect the deceased person's personality or interests.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the platform or newspaper immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the mistake and suggested corrections.
