Obituary Preview: Dennis Patrick Donovan, 64, died Monday, April 22, 2024, at home in Dubuque, Iowa. To honor Dennis’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:30 p.m. until 2:15 p.m., on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. There will be a sharing celebration held at 2:30 p.m. At Dennis’s request: no suits or ties.
Dennis was born January 7, 1960, in Dubuque, Iowa to Joan (Dougherty) Donovan and Gerald “Buzzy” Donovan. Dennis lived in Branson, MO for 37 years.
Dennis enjoyed arrowhead hunting, antique collecting, deer hunting with his buddies, grabbing a cup of coffee, taking care of his mother as she grew older, spotting wildlife, and making people laugh. Dennis did various kinds of work over the years, ranging from physical labor to sales, which he excelled in due to his superior bullshitting skills. He was grateful for the close friendship of Mike Mertes and Randy Adams, spending countless hours with them over the years. More than anything, Dennis loved and was so proud of his family. He looked forward to time spent with his granddaughter, who he thought was the best granddaughter ever. His wife, Julie, was, in his words, his “major love forever.”
He is survived by his wife, Julie; his daughter, Holly Donovan (daughter-in-law Clara Altman), Washington DC; his son, Danny Donovan, Homer, AK; and granddaughter Frances Altman-Donovan. As well as his sister, Mary Kay Dencklau, Norwalk, IA; his brother, Dave (Trena) Donovan, Forsyth, MO; nieces Amy and Cindy, Forsyth, MO; and many Klein family members on his wife’s side.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Danny Donovan; and a brother-in-law, Scott Dencklau. Dennis and his family wanted to thank the oncology staff at Mercy Hospital, especially Kelly and
Diane, as well as the caring Hospice of Dubuque staff (Kourtney you were our rock) who helped take care of him in his final days.

Walter J. Burke - November 30, 1955 - April 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: Walter J. Burke, age 68, of Dubuque, passed away at 8:39 a.m., on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. In keeping with Walter’s wishes there will be no public visitation. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street is assisting his family.
Walter was born on November 30, 1955, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Robert and Agnes (Wolert) Burke.
Walter graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School, Class of 1974. He was united in marriage to Brenda Thurston on May 12, 1999, at Eagle Point Park. Sadly she preceded him in death on May 31, 2022. Walter was a hard worker who devoted his career to several companies including FDL, Farmland Foods, Turnquist Carpets and John Deere Dubuque Works. He finally retired in 2016 from Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing. In his free time Walter enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Some of his favorite activities were going to the Boat Club, watching NASCAR and camping. He was a good man and will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish Walter’s memory include his daughters, Amber Connolly and Kelly Burke, both of Dubuque, IA; 5 grandchildren, Alex Burke, William “Willy” Ryder, Hannah Burke and Sophia and Mitchell Connolly; a great-grandson, Emmett Burke; and his siblings, Jerry (Deb) Burke, Des Moines, IA
and Linda Burke, Belton, TX.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Brenda Burke; and a stillborn son, Jeffery J. Burke.

Joseph C. Kruser - October 15, 1948 - April 17, 2024

Obituary Preview: Joseph Kruser, age 75, of Sherrill, passed away at 6:30pm, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at home. To honor Joe’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 until 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Funeral services will be held at 7:00pm with Pastor Jack Redmond officiating.
Joseph was born on October 15, 1948, in Dubuque, son of Clarence and Alma (Gronau) Kruser.
Joe attended school in Dubuque and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Following his graduation Joe had a few odd jobs and then began a career with John Deere Dubuque Works. He met his future wife, Jerrilyn Havens, and they were married on July 19, 1969 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque. They celebrated 53 years of marriage last year. Joe’s career at Deere’s spanned 33 years and included many positions, lastly as a painter and in maintenance. Joe retired in 2000, but not wanting to sit still, he began working for Three Rivers FS in Holy Cross for 10 more years. Joe was a proud member of the UAW Local 94, he enjoyed traveling, fishing and riding his Harley Davidson.
One of his greatest joys was spending time with his children and his grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish Joe’s memory include his wife, Jerrilyn Kruser, Sherrill, IA; his children, Jason (Darla) Kruser, Mountain Lake, MN, Jeremy Kruser, Bloomfield, IA and Jodi (Jeremy) Siebler, Davenport, IA; and 5 grandchildren,
Shelby Kruser, Isabella and Olivia Kruser, and Zane and Margo Siebler.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Bernice Havens, a daughter-in-law, Michele Kruser, and a brother, James Kruser.

Steven M. Garner officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Gloria was born on November 28, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Alvy and Evelyn (Roeder) Kennedy. Gloria graduated from Dubuque Senior High School, Class of 1948. She was married to Ronald R. Pline by Msgr. Kerper at Nativity Church in Dubuque on September 20, 1949. They had a large family and spent many happy years together before Ron passed away on February 9, 2010. Gloria was a wonderful wife and mom who also worked as the manager of food service at Luther Manor, retiring on April 6, 1996. In her younger years Gloria was a Girl Scout leader and directed Brownie Camp. She loved being outdoors and she and Ron traveled to Yellowstone National Park from 1989 - 2009, where they participated in the Geyser Observation Study Association program. Her last trip to Yellowstone was in 2010 with her daughter, Kathy. In her later years Gloria liked going to Eagle Point Park, “people watching”, reading and trying her luck at the casino. Her family was always her top priority in life, and each and every member knew how special they were to her. Gloria was a great woman and will be tremendously missed!! Wayne was born on August 11, 1937, in Dubuque to Albert and Pauline (Stierman) Bauer. He was a 1955 graduate of Loras Academy. Wayne worked at Dubuque Pack, FDL and Farmland Foods for 44 years and was a member of Union Local 431. He was a lifelong resident of Dubuque and member of Holy Spirit Parish. Mr. Bauer is survived by his godson, Steve Porter, Fulton, IL; several cousins; and friend,
Vern Auderer, Dubuque, IA.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; two aunts, Eleanor and Evelyn Stierman; and many cousins.

To honor Stanley’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. There will be a service held at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, at Behr Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Redmond officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.
Stanley was born on May 26, 1970, in Mumbai, India, the son of Samuel George and Chinamma Samuel.
He graduated from Our Own English High School in Dubai and moved to the United States at age 18 where he attended Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque. While in school he met his future wife, Sheila Faust, and the couple married on December 19, 1992. They started a beautiful family together before deciding to part ways in 2017. Stanley was an entrepreneur owning several businesses throughout the years. He began working at 17th Street Pawn going on to own American Pawn where he learned about all kinds of items, with fine jewelry being his main interest. Stanley loved music and opened Infinity Entertainment and Lighthouse Productions DJ services specializing in weddings and local events. He was a natural musician and could learn how to play almost any instrument by ear. His latest passion was photography and he owned ASH Photography. Stanley truly enjoyed being behind the camera, but not in front of it. He also enjoyed learning how things worked, and could often be found tinkering in his shop on different projects. Stanley lived a very full life and enjoyed every moment to the fullest. He will be deeply missed. Stacey was born on May 31, 1973, in Iowa City to Richard C. “Rick” Leslein and Eleanor “Norann” Michaels. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Richard A. “Dick” and Gertrude M. “Gert” Leslein.
Stacey graduated from Benton High School, Class of 1991. After school she went to work as a CNA at Mt. Carmel. Stacey met her future husband,William Schick in 1995, and they were married on May 14, 2011, in Maquoketa. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandbabies, playing Bingo, fishing, softball, and relaxing with her husband. Stacey will be greatly missed. Paul was born on May 22, 1934, in Peosta, Iowa, son of Glen and Helen (Broderick) McAndrews.
Paul graduated from St. Columbkilles High School. After graduation he was employed by Mt. Carmel as manager of the dairy. He was drafted into the Army in 1957, and served until 1959. Paul was stationed in Germany where he was a member of the Military Baseball Team. He traveled to various bases entertaining the troops and the people living in the area. Paul was united in marriage to Madonna Merfeld on September 16, 1960, at St. Patrick’s Garryowen. He was a hard worker, and was employed by USDA Meat Inspection until his retirement in 1994. Paul will be deeply missed. Those left to cherish Paul’s memory include his wife, Madonna McAndrews, Dubuque, IA; a son, Daniel McAndrews; a grandson, Shawn McAndrews; 2 brothers, David (Mary) McAndrews, Greely, CO and John McAndrews, Dubuque, IA; and his sisters-in-law, Gerry Skahill, Eileen Merfeld
and Mary Ann Merfeld.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his infant children, Diane, Janet, Patricia, Glen and Angie; a sister, Maureen McAndrews; his parents-in-law, Leo and Letitia (Rogers) Merfeld; and in-laws, Mary and Al Tigges, Leonard Merfeld, Margaret and Tom Buchanan, LaVerne Merfeld, Robert Skahill, Eileen and Allan Redmond, Orlie and Mavis Merfeld, Carl Merfeld, Wilfred Merfeld and Grace and Paul Kane.

Russell was born on November 30, 1975, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Donald and Nancy (Blum) Pope.
He was married to Kimberly Fry in 2008. Sadly they decided to part ways, but still remained friends. Russ had many hobbies and interests including reading, listening to rock music and watching sports. He also enjoyed cooking and sharing whatever he made with family and friends. Russ was an excellent chef who worked at several places throughout his career including Carlos O’Kelley’s and most recently Casey’s on Peru Road. Russ made fantastic sweets and his chili was literally award winning! He also liked being in the great outdoors, especially if it involved finding a good fishing hole. Russ was a jokester and loved to have fun no matter what he was doing. He liked to spend time with his friends sharing an ice cold beverage and some good conversation. Those left to cherish Russ’s memory include his father, Donald Pope; his siblings, Cassandra Beck, Angelique Iuzzolino and Randy Pope; and his former wife,

Ann was born on September 30, 1934, in Dyersville, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Jaeger) Schlarmann.
Ann was united in marriage to Loras Kieffer on June 2, 1956, in Bellevue, Iowa. The couple were blessed with 5 children and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year. Ann was an extremely devoted wife and mom who took great pride in caring for her family and home. She was a great cook and baker who made every family meal special with candles and conversation about the events of the day. She cared for her extended family as well, nothing was more important to her than making sure everyone had what they needed. Ann loved traveling, with some her favorite destinations being Hawaii and Florida. She and Loras also had a lake home in Morrison, Illinois and would head down every weekend to spend time with their friends. She loved being outside tending to her garden and flower beds and putting together jigsaw puzzles. Ann was a very special lady who was very loved and will be deeply missed. Those left to cherish Ann’s memory include her devoted husband, Loras Kieffer, Dubuque, IA; her children, Jeffery (Carol) Kieffer, Dubuque, IA, Karla (Dennis) Krapfl, Dubuque, IA, Kimberly (Jeffery) Lippstock, Dubuque, IA, and Todd (Kelly) Kieffer, Waterloo, IA; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and her in-laws,
Francis (Sandy) Kieffer, Hawaii.

Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday at St. Patrick Church, with Rev. Dennis J. Quint officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home is assisting Ron’s family.
Ron was born on January 11, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Patrick C. and Marjorie (Schmitz) Hayes. Ron attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Jefferson Middle School and Dubuque Senior High School. He was united in marriage to his true love, Donna Priest, on April 29, 1961, at Sacred Heart Church. In 1966, Ron and Donna joined St. Patrick’s Church and have been members ever since. His faith was extremely important to him, and Ron had a special devotion to praying the Rosary. He generously volunteered his time and talents for several years at St. Patrick’s Church, Stonehill Care Center, Mount St. Francis and Clare House. Ron was employed at Sears for 30 years, starting in the automotive department and ending up in the service department. After Sears closed, Ron went to work at Medical Associates in their maintenance department and retired again after 10 years. Ron had several hobbies, but his favorite was spending time in the garage working on his cars. He restored several, and his grandson still has Ron’s prized 1939 Chevy. He also liked to spend time watching old movies and listening to Buddy Holly. Ron loved his family and spending time with the grandbabies brought him great joy! They knew he always had a pocket full of Tootsie Rolls to share. Ron regularly picked his granddaughters up from preschool when they were small and took them to Sunshine Restaurant for lunch, a memory that they will always treasure. Ron had a generous nature and was always willing to help someone in need. He had a special way of making people feel comfortable and everyone enjoyed his teasing personality. Ron’s famous quote was, “If I don’t see you later, so what”, a tribute to his jokester side. Ron was truly one of a kind and he will be greatly missed! To honor Debbie’s life, family and friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, where there will be a parish scripture service held at 3:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue, with Rev. Jeff Frieden officiating. Entombment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
Debbie was born on Leap Day, February 29, 1960, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Donald and Lorraine (Witt) Heming Sr.
She attended Holy Ghost Grade School and graduated from Hempstead High School in Dubuque. She married the love of her life, Edward J. “Ed” Ruh, on May 28, 1983, at Holy Ghost Church. The couple had a wonderful life together and completed their family when they adopted their son Joe in 1989. Sadly Ed passed away on February 2, 2020, shortly before their 37th wedding anniversary. She was a long time member of Holy Ghost Church in Dubuque. Debbie was an extremely devoted wife and mom who loved to work. She worked in the Environmental Services Department at Stonehill Franciscan Services, retiring after 11 years and also at Taco John’s for many years. Her family was her greatest joy and Debbie especially looked forward to seeing the grandchildren any chance she could. She loved spending time at the house in North Buena Vista fishing and just enjoying nature. She was a fan of watching NCIS, Fire Country and all the Chicago shows on TV, and rooting on the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. She also enjoyed quiet time doing word search puzzles. Everyone who knew her knew that Debbie loved her ice cream treats and chocolate milk. Debbie was a wonderful woman who made the world around her a better place. We will miss her tremendously. Those left to cherish Debbie’s memory include her son, Joe Ruh; 3 grandchildren, Penelope (10), Olive (7), Holden (3) Ruh; a brother, Don (Lynne Lippert) Heming, Dubuque, IA; her in-laws, John (Phyllis) Ruh, Marion, IA and Francine “Fran” Fagan, Dubuque, IA;

To honor Mary’s life, family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m., on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street. Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday at Behr’s with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.
Mary was born on April 17, 1948, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Art and Dorothy (Heisler) Phillips.
She graduated from St. Boniface High School in New Vienna. After school Mary attended hospitality training in Waterloo and then went to work with Ertl for a time. She was married to Robert J. Schulte on November 29, 1969, at St. Boniface Church. After they married Mary and Bob owned and operated RJ’s Septic Service and Excavating until Bob passed away on November 16, 1984. Mary was never afraid of hard work, and after Bob’s passing she held 5 jobs at the same time. She was employed at the Regal 8 Motel, The Big 10 Mart, Merry Maids, Suzanne’s Tanning and she bartended at Antonio’s. Eventually Mary went to work at DuTrac Community Credit Union, retiring on August 20, 2020, after 39 years of service. Mary’s faith was very important to her, helping her to weather the storms that life sent her way. She was proud to be a long time member of Holy Ghost Church. Mary loved her family and getting together with everyone. Cooking for them was a favorite activity. She was an excellent cook who started with a recipe, but always added her own special touches to make it even better. She loved the water and whenever she could work a boat ride into her day she was thrilled. Mary also enjoyed vacationing with her family. Our hearts are deeply saddened at losing her so suddenly and unexpectedly. Mary was an extraordinary woman, always wanting to help others and made the world a better place for all that knew her. She was dearly loved and will be missed every day. Those left to cherish Mary’s memory include her daughter, Paula Schulte, Dubuque, IA; her siblings, Larry (Jan) Phillips, Peosta, IA, Janet Phillips, Dubuque, IA, Loras Phillips, Dyersville, IA and Diann (Dan) Michels, Cedar Rapids, IA; her sister-in-law, Susan Schulte, Earlville, IA;

Obituary Preview: Chester (Chet) Thomas McGrath of Cedar Rapids, IA, formerly of Dubuque, IA, passed away at the age of 95 on Monday evening, March 18, 2024, at Harmony Cedar Rapids. Behr’s Funeral Home in Dubuque, IA, is assisting the family with arrangements. Chet’s daughters will greet friends and family at Behr’s (1491 Main St., Dubuque, IA) on Friday, March 22, between 9:30 and 11 am. A private graveside service and burial will follow at St. Clement Cemetery.
Chester was born on June 25, 1928, in Latnerville, IA, to Peter and Anna (Lucas) McGrath. He was raised in Graf, IA, and helped support his family after his father passed away by working a paper route as a young boy, and then going to work on the railroads at age 14. At age 16, Chester enlisted in the U.S. Navy ‘as a 17-year old’ to join the war effort towards the end of WWII. He proudly served his country for 4 years. Chester married Eunice Manemann on July 30, 1955. They had five children together and shared 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. They later divorced, but remained friends throughout their lives.
Chester had a 30-year career at the Dubuque Packing Company. After retiring, he enjoyed simple pleasures like lunches at Eagle Point Park with his daughters and grandchildren, solving world problems with other retirees during their morning coffees at the downtown Dubuque McDonalds, and watching the bald eagles soar over the Dubuque Lock & Dam. He especially enjoyed flashy cars and listening to the Cubs baseball games on the radio. Chester eventually made his way to Cedar Rapids, IA, to be closer to his daughters. He found an extended family at Evergreen Estates in Cedar Rapids, who provided compassionate care and assistance during the last 16 years of his independent life. Harmony of Cedar Rapids, Mercy Medical Center, and
the VA Clinic and Hospital provided much appreciated end-of-life care for Chester.
Surviving are three daughters Tami (Allan) Pierson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tania (George) Aboud of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Marymichael McGrath of Austin, TX. Also surviving is Chester’s sister, Coletta Schultz, of Dubuque, IA. Grandchildren include Christopher McGrath, Ashley Pierson-Patten, Jordan Hobbs, Jenna Spence, Lauren Aboud, Zackary Aboud, and Madison McGrath, plus great-grandchildren Carter, Kylie, Lincoln, Alia, Alaina, Violet, Jasper, Regan, and Charly. Chester was preceded in death by his two sons, Troy McGrath and Paris McGrath (Capulet), both of Cedar Rapids, and his former wife Eunice McGrath of Cedar Rapids. Siblings (and spouses) Vernon
(Eleanor) McGrath, Anna Mae (Albert) Hoist, Ralph (Bernadine) McGrath, and Merlin ‘Bud’ Schultz, all of Dubuque, also passed before Chester.

Emil was born on February 8, 1950, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Emil Bernard and Anna Mae (Chapman) Otting Sr.
Emil lived in Dubuque his entire life where he attended Holy Ghost Grade School. After school, Emil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army on active duty for 2 years during the Vietnam War, and with the Army Reserves for another 20 years. He married Ruby Ward on August 2, 1969, at St. Mary’s Church. They built a wonderful life together and were blessed with 4 children and several grandchildren. Sadly, Ruby preceded Emil in death on October 5, 2018. Emil devoted his working career to Georgia Pacific, happily retiring after 47 years. He was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque where he volunteered helping with Bingo and cleaning the school. Emil loved his family and playing with the grandkids was one of his favorite activities. He was very loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Rita graduated from high school and on May 9, 1953, married the love of her life, John “Jack” Hafkemeyer. They were blessed with 4 children and 51 years of marriage before Jack passed away on September 10, 2004. Rita was an excellent wife and mom who also devoted 26 years to her career at Schlueter Insurance as an agent. Her faith was an important aspect of her life as evidenced by her long time membership at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Rita was a member of the Rosary Society and volunteered countless hours helping out with church functions. She also volunteered with the Dubuque Arboretum and the SHIIP Program through Finley Hospital. Rita loved the beauty of nature and caring for her garden and all of her flowers brought her great joy. In their younger years Rita and Jack had a cottage in Buenie and spent lots of time on the river. Family was always Rita’s main focus and she loved spending time with everyone as often as possible. Rita had a wonderful 90 years here on Earth. They weren’t always easy, but she took each day in stride with a positive attitude and trusted that God had a plan. She was deeply loved and will be missed greatly. Bob was born on December 27, 1932, in Sherrill, Iowa, son of Edward and Anna (Heitzman) Spoerre.
Bob attended school in Sherrill and Dubuque where he graduated from high school. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. Not long after he returned home Bob married his wonderful wife, Sondra Baker, on February 13, 1956, at St. Raphael Cathedral. They were blessed with a big, loving family. Sadly Sondra passed away on November 22, 2012. Bob was a devoted employee who gave 33 years to the Dubuque Packing Company and another 9 years as a sheet metal worker at Klauer Manufacturing. He made the most out of his time after retirement doing woodworking, tending to his garden and traveling. He and Sondra traveled all over Europe and have visited all but 4 states in the US. Bob was also very active in his community. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, the American Legion Dubuque Post 6 and volunteered with the Sherrill Fire Department for 43 years, where he also served as Treasurer for 15 years. Bob’s family meant the world to him and he always looked forward to family gatherings. He was a good man and will be greatly missed. Obituary Preview: Jerold Stumpner 86, of Balltown, Iowa passed away February 24, 2024 at his home in Minnesota after a four-year battle with cancer. No visitation or service. Behr Funeral Home is assisting the family.
He was born on April 18, 1937 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, son of Phillip and Josephine (Jelinek) Stumpner. He married Alice Hoelker on September 7, 1963; she preceded him in death in 1981. Jerold served in the Army and retired from John Deere Dubuque Works in 1992. Jerry loved spending time with his kids and their families and entertaining them with “Grandpa jokes” and word plays, taking them on hikes or trips, and telling them stories from his childhood. He could often be found hiking the trails of his favorite state parks, canoeing, and enjoying the outdoors. When he was not outdoors, he was a hobbyist, creating many balsa wood airplanes, rockets, and other models. Family came first to Jerry, and he was always ready to help relatives when they needed a hand, as well as his kids and grandkids on countless occasions with driving lessons, pet sitting, house repairs, and much more. Surviving are his daughter, Dawn Stumpner of Madison, Wisconsin and his son, David (Jodi)
Stumpner of North St. Paul, Minnesota, five grandchildren, Paulo, José, Manolo, Samantha & Abigail.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carol & Josephine (Cookie). His wish will be honored to not have a Mass or service, but rather to play “Big Rock Candy Mountain” by Burl Ives and “Headed to the Last Roundup” by Gene Autry to remember him by. Think of him the next time you take a hike or enjoy the outdoors. When you weep for me, remember it was meant to be
Lay me down and when you leave, remember I’ll be at your sleeve. So remember as you wipe your tears the joy I knew throughout the years,
as I lived my life with you I pray that thought will see you through. We may not be together in the way we used to be;

Rickey enjoyed fishing, hiking, swimming, camping and being outdoors. He was a boy scout and an avid video game player. He enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Jane was born on May 10, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, daughter of Elvester and Irene (Eckert) Sowell Sr.
Jane met the love of her life, Ernesto Gutierrez, at an early age and the couple would marry on August 5, 1957, in Mason City, Iowa. They have been truly blessed with 7 children and 66 years together. Jane was a fantastic wife and mom who took great pride in caring for her family and home. She worked outside of her home at Kwik Stop, Casey’s, as a cook at the Riverview Hotel in Bellevue, the Carriage House Café, and did catering in the Quad Cities. Jane was never one to sit still, also volunteering in her community cooking and delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a wiz in the kitchen and everyone loved her homemade bread. When she had some free time Jane liked to go to the local casinos to try her luck with family and friends and attending Bingo at Bethany. She also enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles and working seek and find puzzles. Above all Jane loved spending time with her close knit family. She always looked forward to family picnics and getting everyone together for Christmas, her favorite holiday. Jane was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma and sister. She will be missed tremendously. To honor Rita's life, family and friends may visit from 9:00 am until 10:15 a.m, on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Ghost Church, 2921 Central Avenue. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Ghost Church, with Rev. Steven M. Garner officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Behr Funeral Home is assisting Rita's family.
Rita was a woman of grace, compassion, and generosity, with a wonderful sense of humor. She lived a long life full of love, selflessness, and a deep devotion to her family, her community, and her Faith. Rita was born on March 1, 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of John and Minnie (Krug) Riedl. Shortly after graduating as class president and Valedictorian from The Immaculate Conception Academy, Rita married Aloysius Koos on August 8th, 1950 in Dubuque. They had 3 children together before Aloysius tragically passed away on May 25, 1957. With the help of her family and Faith, she raised her three beloved children while working full time and stayed actively involved in the community. Later in life Rita once again found love with Albert "Bud" Mohr. The couple married on June 9, 1978, and celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary together before he preceded her in death.
Rita worked with A.Y. McDonald for over 53 years, beginning as Pool Secretary and advancing quickly to serve as Executive Assistant to Bruce McDonald, and then as Vice President of Public Relations. She was a member of Holy Ghost Church and Rosary Society, past President of the Dubuque Business and Professional Women Organization, a Director of the Dubuque Racing Association, and the 1st Lady Elk of Dubuque. Rita also volunteered countless hours with the United Way, Junior Achievement, and with Mercy Development Community. When she found some free time, Rita enjoyed league bowling, playing cards, and playing piano. Rita always had a smile on her face and was the biggest cheerleader for her loved ones; her children, grandchildren, and extended family (including friends). She was admired and cherished, and will be deeply missed by all whose lives she has touched. “She had time for those she thought were overlooked or appeared to be forgotten and made them feel a part of her family. If they were younger, they became another grandchild. Who knows how many grandchildren she actually has but she made them each feel loved and everyone had a seat at her table.” Those left to cherish Rita's memory include her children; Joseph (Sheri) Koos, East Dubuque, IL Kenneth (Kristin) Koos, Marco Island, FL & Farmington, CT; James (Judy) Mohr, Dubuque, IA Jerrold Mohr, Dubuque, IA and John Mohr, Kingston, NY her grandchildren; Nicholas (Dana) Koos, Anthony (Megan) Koos, Alexander Koos and Ericka Koos; Jeff (Lindsey) Mohr, Lisa Mohr, Jennifer (Chris) Wand, John Paul Mohr, Melissa Mohr, Gary Mohr, Jeremy (Kayla) Mohr and Jessica Mohr; several great-grandchildren; her siblings; John (Ruth) Riedl, Barbara (Lloyd) Auderer and Tom (Suzanne) Riedl, all of Dubuque, IA;

Norb was born on May 11, 1938, in Dubuque County, Iowa, son of William and Mary (Knockel) Smith.
Norb attended Sts. Peter and Paul School in Sherrill. He was a life long dairy farmer in Sherrill before moving to Sageville in 1998. He was also a dealer for Archer Oil. Norb married the love of his life, Betty Schroeder, on June 10, 1961, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Balltown. They were blessed with a large family and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last year. Norb was very active in his community. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Hawkeye Vintage Farm Machinery Association and the Tri-County Sportsman Club. Norb also served on the Sherrill Fire Department for 34 years. In his free time, Norb enjoyed spending time outside watching the boys pull tractors, fishing, squirrel and deer hunting, working in his big garden, cutting wood and a warm fire. He also liked watching Gunsmoke, Westerns and playing Euchre with family and friends. Norb was an excellent role model for his family, always putting others before himself. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Doris was born on September 1, 1938, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of John and Lena (Schultz) Meyer.
Doris graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Dubuque. Not long after that she married the love of her life, Ronald Brandel, on December 28, 1957, at Sacred Heart Church. They spent 64 fun filled years together before Ron passed away on July 10, 2022. She was an excellent wife and mother who also worked with the Dubuque Community Schools. She spent 31 years at Central School before she finally decided it was time to retire. Doris loved her job there, and she and her co-workers always made sure their days were full of laughter. Doris was a wonderful hostess and loved to entertain. She was an outstanding cook and beautiful floral designer, both of which come in very handy when having family and friends over for special occasions. Doris also had a very thrifty side and enjoyed going to garage sales and thrift stores looking for treasures. In her younger days, she and Ron spent countless hours at their cottage on Esmann Island. Her faith was also an important part of her life, and she was a long time member of Sacred Heart Church. Her family meant the world to Doris and she made sure each and every person knew how special they were. The world was a better place because Doris was in it. She will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish Doris’ memory include her children, Beth (Robert) Schmerbach, Dyersville, IA, Lynne (Patrick) Einarsen, Dubuque, IA and Chris Brandel, Wauwatosa, WI; 5 grandchildren, Jeffrey (Alysia) Schmerbach, Ellen (Michael) Hirsch, AnnaRose Einarsen, Olivia Einarsen and Max Einarsen; and 6 great grandchildren,

They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in a couple months. In his free time Harold enjoyed working outside in his garden and canning his harvest to share with family and friends. He was a self proclaimed “River Rat” who loved boating and fishing on the Mississippi. He also enjoyed camping trips with his family and traveling to Florida. Harold was a good man and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
