Obituary Preview: Denis Alan Berns, 65, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at his home, following a lengthy courageous battle with cancer.
A prayer service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Hawkeye. Inurnment will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery.
Denis Alan, son of Lawrence and Marilyn (Schlatter) Berns was born January 8, 1959, in West Union. He was baptized in the Catholic Faith and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Denis received his early education in Hawkeye and graduated from North Fayette High School in 1978. Following graduation, he continued his education at N.I.C.C. in Calmar receiving a degree in Auto Mechanics. On March 10, 1984, he was united in marriage with Rachel Morse at the Little Brown Church, near Nashua. To this union three daughters were born, Kristen, Heather and Alysia. Denis began his professional career working in construction prior to a long career in HVAC. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, boating, going for rides on his motorcycle, and fishing. Denis was able to fix anything and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Denis is survived by his wife, Rachel of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Kristen (Alex) Sindelar, Heather Berns, and Alysia Berns, all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Alexis, Ava, and Jack Woodward, Cheyenne Marion, Kylie Doss, and Haven and Levi Sindelar; mother, Marilyn Berns of Hawkeye; brother, Gary Berns of Hawkeye; and brother-in-law, Stephen Morse of Oakland, California.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Berns; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Lois Morse.

Kent Paul Schuchmann - February 14, 1946 - March 13, 2024

Obituary Preview: Kent Paul Schuchmann, 78, of West Union, IA passed away on March 13th, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, West Union, IA.
Kent was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 1946, in Hampton Iowa. His adoptive parents were Clarence and Lois (Kiel) Schuchmann of Hawkeye, IA. He grew up on the Schuchmann family farm and attended North High, West Union graduating in May 1964. After graduating high school, he served in the military for four years at Point Magu Naval Base in California, testing air-to-air guided missiles. He was honorably discharged in 1968. After leaving the Navy, Kent was a Doctor of Chiropractic for seventeen years and then worked at Dundee Castings in Ida, MI for twenty years.
On February 26th, 1967, Kent married his high school sweetheart Patricia Ann Conklin and were united in marriage in Alpha, Iowa. They moved many times together, from Ventura, CA to Davenport, IA then back to Ventura, CA, then back to Iowa through New Hampton, Cresco, and Riceville, up to Michigan in Lambertville and Temperance, and then finally back to Iowa in West Union, raising two sons along the way.
Kent loved helping people, had a good sense of humor, and was very proud of his 1974 Barracuda Green golf cart. Being the first resident to use a golf cart around town, Kent was the first person in West Union to be issued a golf cart license, at his insistence. When the fairgrounds were busy, Kent would always offer rides back and forth from the parking lot to those who needed it, as well as running small errands around town to help friends out. Kent had a strong sense of service and leadership and over the years was a active in many different philanthropic and service organizations such as the Jaycee’s in New Hampton, IA; the Shriners (Provost Motorcycle Unit); Riceville UMC Administrative Council; Riceville Community Club; Cub Scout Pack Leader and Scoutmaster, Riceville; American Legion Post 514 Commander Ida, MI; National Active & Retired Federal Employees of NE IA President; West Union UMC Administrative Council; Fayette County Historical Center Board; Masonic Lodge #69 and was active with the Fayette County Fair Board and Fayette County Speedway Committee. Additionally, Kent could be seen driving his 1939 Farmall H in tractorcades and of course his lime green (barracuda green) golf cart around town visiting, making people laugh and having an opinion on all matters unique to his perspective.
Kent is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Patricia; his two sons, Chad (Amber) Schuchmann of North Carolina, and Todd (Kristin) Schuchmann of Florida; his sister Alayne (Jim) McMillan of California; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in West Union. Inurnment with military rites will be held at Bethel Cemetery, rural Hawkeye. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, March 22nd at the United Methodist Church in West Union and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Saturday. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the church conducted by Masonic Lodge # 69 of West Union. Memorials may be sent to the Fayette County Ag Service (Fair), the Fayette County Historical Society or the Masonic Lodge #69 of West Union, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 18, 2024, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point with Rev. Kate Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the Strawberry Point Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Sunday, March 17th at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Monday. Memorials may be made in Pam's name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (1016 W Jackson Blvd #1073 Chicago, Illinois 60607) or the Hawkeye Public Library (104 2nd St., Hawkeye, Iowa 52147).
Pamela Jean, daughter of Donald and Evelyn (Pfrommer) Chevalier was born November 29, 1949, in Oelwein. She was baptized at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point and confirmed at St. John’s American Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Pam began her education in Strawberry Point prior to the family’s move to Cedar Falls. She continued her schooling in Cedar Falls and Hudson until the family's move back to Strawberry Point. Pam attended and graduated from Starmont High School in 1968. While in high school, she was a cheerleader and was very involved in the arts and theater. She is best remembered for a stellar performance as Mammy Yokum in the production of “L'il Abner.” Following graduation, Pam continued her education at the University of Iowa.
On August 2, 1969, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Jerry McManigle. In the 54 years they were married, they had three children and lived primarily/currently in rural Alpha. Pam furthered her academic career at N.I.C.C., receiving her L.P.N. She worked as a night charge nurse at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union for over 20 years until retirement. Working the night shift allowed her to be home during the day to drive her son Mark to and from school and be available in case he needed anything. She would fit a few hours of sleep in between work and caring for her family at home. Pam will be remembered as a very dedicated worker and caregiver. She said her purpose was to take care of everyone. “That’s just the way it is,” was a very common phrase heard by Pam.
Pam was one of the founding first responders for Hawkeye E.M.S. She enjoyed being an avid gardener and was a member of the Hawkeye Garden Club. Her love of learning and reading led to her membership in the Hawkeye Library Club. Pam also excelled in any craft project she attempted. One example is the beautiful quilt highlighting embroidered squares which she asked her mother to complete, making it a two-generation effort. She enjoyed vacations to visit relatives in Florida when Mark was still with us and summers in northern Minnesota with all the family on the Crow Wing Lake chain.
Pam is survived by her husband, Jerry of rural Alpha; children, Brant (Ty Thompson) McManigle of Golden Valley, Minnesota and Amy McManigle of rural Alpha; two step-grandchildren, Lincoln and Easton Hoyle-Thompson, both of Minneapolis; sisters, Susie Barker of Hazelton and Terri (David) Gould of Strawberry Point; brother, James (Brooke) Chevalier of Daytona Beach, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark on Dec. 1, 1993; her parents; brother, Randy Chevalier; parents-in-law, Tony and Christileen McManigle; brothers-in-law, Monte Barker, Kenneth and Roland McManigle; and sisters-in-law, Connie Rau and Deanna Siders.
Pam will be sorely missed by her family and her community.

Daryl Joe, son of Lester and Velma (Boie) Weidemann was born November 7, 1950, at West Union. He was baptized on December 10, 1950, and confirmed May 17, 1964, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Daryl graduated from North High School in 1968. He was a lifetime farmer in the rural Hawkeye area, farming the Weidemann family farm. Daryl was a livestock and grain farmer. On August 30, 1997, he was united in marriage with Sanda Fleshner at Trinity Lutheran Church. Daryl was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye Coop (serving as secretary), and the Hawkeye Community Hall Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, Westerns, spending time with family and attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. Daryl enjoyed leading a simple life and was a farmer through and through.
Daryl is survived by his wife, Sanda of Hawkeye; children, Travis (Stacy) Fleshner of Parkersburg, Rochelle Fleshner of Waterloo and Trenton (Amy) Fleshner of Woodward; grandchildren, Hunter (Justine Nagel) Fleshner, Tyson Fleshner, Chloe Fleshner, Antawn Fleshner, Shamaria Walker, Demario Walker, Eva Fleshner and Lucy Fleshner; great-granddaughter, Cynovea Smith; sister, Edie Daniels; sisters-in-law, Bev Weidemann of Sumner, Diana (Doug) Bacon of Duncombe, Connie Tope of West Union, and Karren McAtee of Center Point; brother-in-law, Ralph (LeAnne) Moore of Independence; several nieces and nephews and Goddaughter, Susan Weidemann of Des Moines.

Donna Dee, daughter of George, Sr. and Delia (Wendland) Boess was born September 5, 1933, in Hawkeye. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Donna received her education in the Hawkeye School System and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1951. Following graduation, she would attend Pitzi’s Cosmetology School in Waterloo and worked at a salon in Waukon for a few years. On November 27, 1953, she was united in marriage with Lloyd Robinson. To this union three sons were born, Gary, Steven, and Kurt. The couple farmed in the Hawkeye area until Lloyd’s death occurred in 2015. Donna also worked on the Fayette County Zoning Board and was a sales associate at TK’s clothing store in West Union for several years. She remained at the family’s farmstead until she moved to Stoney Brook Assisted Living in December of 2022. Donna was a long time active member of the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye. She enjoyed mowing her lawn and afterwards enjoyed a frosty beverage and some Doritos. In addition, Donna enjoyed golfing, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes in football or basketball, also was a big fan of the Oakland Raiders (especially George Blanda), was an avid reader, but her greatest joy came from watching her children and grandchildren activities.
Donna is survived by her three sons, Gary (Ronda) Robinson, Steven (Robin) Robinson, both of Hawkeye, and Kurt (Brenda) Robinson of Bellevue, Nebraska; grandchildren, Mike Robinson of Aurora, Heather Robinson of Independence, Morgan Robinson of Maynard, Nick (Taylor) Robinson of Maynard, Samantha Robinson of Cedar Rapids, Dan (Michele) Bauer of Kalispell, Montana, Lindsey (Taylor) Dunlop of Longmont, Colorado, Brian (Sara) Solma of Omaha, Nebraska, Katie (Josh) McFarlane of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mariah (Brett) Sharbono of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Christine Solma of Omaha, Nebraska; great-grandchildren, Mikenzie and Drake Bauer, Ramey, Brooks, Brewer, and Dansby Robinson, Ruby June Solma, Finley, Keigan, Maverick, and Bennett McFarlane, and Connor, Natalie, and Elizabeth Sharbono; brothers, Paul (Dorothy) Boess and Alan (Doris) Boess, both of Hawkeye; sister, Jean Huffey of Decorah; sister-in-law, Jo Boess of Hawkeye; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born March 2, 1940, in Stanley, Iowa. The daughter of William and Goldie (Menuey) Suhr. She was joined in holy matrimony to James “Jim” Hoyt on October 20th, 1958, at the Hawkeye Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, Iowa. From this union 4 children were born, 5 grandchildren, and in April a total of 6 great grandchildren. Judy enjoyed spending time with her family, playing card games, and crafting. Judy graduated from West Union High School, while there she loved playing basketball and being captain of the team. She was a loving homemaker who made the daily work of farming an enjoyable family affair. She enjoyed going dancing with Jim and the two enjoyed going fishing with their grandchildren. She loved playing card games with family and friends and had a passion for gardening. She always asked Jim to fill the bird feeders she could see out the kitchen window because as her sister Goldie put it “she loved her red birds.”
Survived by: her husband, James, of 65 years; a daughter, JoDee (Tom) Till of Dyersville; sons James "Jamie" of Denver, CO, & Jayce "JC" (Amy) of Kansas City, MO; 5 grandchildren, Jolynn (Alex), Katelynn, Jaquline, Nathaniel, & Brianna; and 5 great grandchildren, Finnick, Duncan, Elon, twins Lyle and Evanna, and another due in April; three brothers, Henry Suhr, Aelvin (Julie) Suhr, Melvin (Holly) Suhr; four sisters, Goldie Platte, Anna Ungerer, Lois (Jake) Kocher, Marlene (Al) Bradley; brother-in-law Ivan Hoyt; sisters-in-law, Sandy Suhr and Faye Hanson (Reggie); and many nieces & nephews.

Jacqueline Ann, daughter of Jason and Mardelle (Driscoll) Birchard was born February 27, 1944, in Oelwein. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Oelwein. Jacquie received her education in the Oelwein School System and graduated from Oelwein High School in 1963. On July 16, 1963, she was united in marriage with Earl Anderson. To this union two children were born, Brenda and Doug. The couple farmed, rural Hawkeye for several years prior to becoming avid antique collectors, and sold antiques in many shops and malls over the years. She was a member of the Merryville Social Club. In addition to Jacquie’s love of antiques, she enjoyed baking, and going for rides, going out to dinner, and going to the river.
Jacquie is survived by her two children, Brenda (Kent) Moore of Elgin and Doug (Stefanie) Anderson of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Natalie Moore of Los Angeles, California and Cassidy Anderson of Des Moines; grandson, Abner Affrey Anderson; step-grandson, William Brown; and siblings, Jerrald (Patricia) Birchard of Hillsboro, Texas, Jean (Al) Baldwin of Oelwein, Jane (Dave) Briden of Cedar Falls , Joy (Eugene) Purdy of Oelwein, Jolene (James) Olson of Benson, Tennessee, and Joan (Lindsey) Hershey of Brandenburg, Kentucky.

Willard, son of Edward, Sr. and June (Null) Paschal was born May 6, 1942, in Freeport, Illinois. He received his education in the Freeport Schools and graduated from Freeport High School in 1960. Following graduation, Bill began working with his Dad on the family’s farm. After farming for several years, he began his career as a semi-truck driver. On April 17, 1985, he was united in marriage with Connie Welsh. The couple lived in Waucoma for thirty years before calling McGregor home for the past 20 years. Bill had a passion for trapping, and enjoyed playing slow pitch softball and playing cards.
Bill is survived by his wife, Connie of McGregor; children, Ed Wickham, Margie Wright of West Union, James Maser of Greenfield, Tracey Maser Phillips of Farmersburg, and Curtis Maser of Lake Mills; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Paschal, Jr. of Cedar Rapids; and sisters-in-law, Carla (Rick) McClanahan of Clever, Missouri and Ava (Paul) Tucker of Lawler.

Kenny graduated from North Fayette High School in 1981. He worked at Blessings in Oelwein and later at Alum-Line in Cresco. Kenny enjoyed working on small engines.

Rita was married to Lawrence Downs on October 4, 1952, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas.
She enjoyed caring for her family, gardening, and crocheting.
Rita is survived by her children, David (Brinda) Downs of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Charles (Brenda) Downs of Fayette, and Deanne (Kurt) Bachman of Ankeny; grandchildren, Justin and Jacob Downs, Lori Bachman, Bethany Bachman, and Stacy Minichello; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Theresa Mihm; husband, Lawrence Downs; two brothers, Arthur Mihm and Delbert Mihm; one sister, Mathilda Phelps; four grandchildren, Jason, Jeffrey, and Joshua Downs and Matthew Bachman; and great-grandson, Benjamin Meese.
Surviving family and friends will cherish Rita's memory.

Carl Brian, son of Junior and Ruth (Schnor) Opperman was born October 22, 1961, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. He received his early education in Hawkeye prior to graduating from North Fayette High School. Carl worked in construction his entire professional career, starting at Carlson’s in Decorah and has been at Heartland Asphalt in Mason City for the past fifteen years. He thoroughly enjoyed his work, but in his limited spare time, he enjoyed going for trips on his motorcycle.
Carl is survived by his children and three granddaughters, Whitney Lowery of Cresco, and her two daughters, Nevaeh Opperman and Ra’Niyah Lowery and Wyatt (Sierra) Opperman of Webster City, and their daughter, Rory; siblings, Allen (Zinny) Opperman of Jacksonville, Florida, Teresa Curless of Harrisburg, North Carolina, George Opperman of Spillville, Nancy Opperman of Hawkeye, Mary (Mark) Massman of Ossian and Chris Opperman of Oelwein; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Irvin Christopher, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Bruening) Franzen was born March 6, 1929, on the family farm near St. Lucas. He was baptized on March 7, 1929, and confirmed December 16, 1939, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Irvin received his education in the St. Luke’s Parochial School. He was a long time farm hand in Northeast Iowa, and worked for George and Frances Thelman from 1954 until retiring in 1999. Following retirement, he moved in to Hawkeye. Irvin was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it and that selflessness led to his being awarded by the Governor of Iowa as a Volunteer of the Year in 2008, for his service to the Senior Meal Site. He enjoyed working on the farm, gardening, and playing cards (especially Euchre).
Irvin is survived by his sister, Helen Palmersheim of Greeley; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Franzen of Festina and Janet Franzen of Ossian; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Carl Franzen, Leonard Franzen, Marie Bruening, Catherine Tierney, Ray Franzen, Theresa Baumler, Pete Franzen, Louis Franzen, Lawrence Franzen, LeRoy Franzen, and Francis Franzen.

LaFonda was born near Elgin, Iowa on June 12, 1936, to Milton Milo Miller and Clara Opal (Brown) Miller. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Baptist Church in Elgin. LaFonda graduated from Elgin High School in 1953. On August 6, 1955, she was united in marriage with Wallace Christopher McIntyre at the First Baptist Church in Elgin. After she was married to Wally she became a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye, where she enjoyed playing the piano with her longtime friend, Carol, who played the Organ. LaFonda worked at the Miss Marquette in Prairie du Chien for a time as a Blackjack Dealer. She enjoyed quilting, Model A car tours, flea markets, playing cards and an occasional trip to a casino but most of all her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Lynn Lee and Lori (Bradley) Halverson both of Hawkeye; four grandchildren, Tara (Chad) Thompson, Annie (Travis) Lamphier, Kensey Lee and Ty (Sierra) Halverson; and five great-grandchildren, Paige Ella and Owen Wallace Thompson, Keira Jade Lee, Kora Lee Lamphier and her very last smile was for Duke Lee Lamphier.

She was baptized December 10, 1933, and confirmed March 21, 1948, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Doris received her early education in the Country Schools rural Hawkeye and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1951. On December 11, 1953, she was united in marriage with Charles Homewood at Trinity Lutheran Church. Doris began her working career at Raytheon in Oelwein, prior to working at Atwood in West Union for thirty years. She was a life time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and was a long time member of the Hawkeye American Legion Auxiliary. Doris enjoyed puzzles and playing cards.
Doris is survived by her sons, Keith Homewood of Des Moines and Jay (Rose Stanbrough) Homewood of Hawkeye; former daughter-in-law, Nanci Homewood of Limerick, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Dustin and Adalina Homewood of Limerick, Maine; sisters, Phyllis Plaster of Denver and Dorothy (Paul) Boess of Hawkeye; two sisters-in-law, Barb Ungerer of Hawkeye and Kate Ungerer of Hawkeye; and many nieces and nephews.

On October 3, 1948, she was united in marriage with Dale John Copp at Trinity Lutheran Church. To this union six children were born, Daryl, Dennis, Sheryl, Caryl, Mike, and Lee. Dale preceded in her death on June 1, 1998. Edith worked alongside her husband farming at rural Fredericksburg and rural Hawkeye before she and her husband retired and moved into Hawkeye. She worked as a waitress for several years. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, belonged to Martha Circle, and the Hawkeye American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards and Bingo, going out to eat, and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family.

Kathy received her education in the Des Moines Schools. She married James Shortell in 1954 and two children were born to this union, Raelene and James. The couple would later divorce. Kathy worked for Picture Rock (a resort area for Priests and Nuns) in Tucson, Arizona, as a cook and manager, and was a waitress for many years at different restaurants in Tucson. Kathy had a strong faith which was very important to her. She enjoyed singing, dancing, playing piano and listening to country and religious music.
Kathy is survived by her daughter, Raelene of Tucson, Arizona, and James Shortell of Texas; five grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; eleven nephews; and one niece.

Cletus Veryl, son of Leonard and Golda (Hansel) Moser was born June 20, 1929, at the family’s home in Osterdock. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith. Clete graduated from Elkport High School in 1947. On January 7, 1961, he was united in marriage with Susanne Latham at the Alpha Methodist Church. Clete worked in construction for several years, prior to he and his wife, Susanne starting Clete Moser Construction, which they owned and operated for over thirty years. The family lived in Cedar Rapids for over thirty years, prior to purchasing the Latham Family Farm, rural Hawkeye in the early 90’s. Clete was a long time member of the Alpha Methodist Church and the Conservation Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, making his own sauerkraut and maple syrup, and was a very skilled mechanic (could fix almost anything). Clete and Susanne recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on January 7th of this year. His love of playing cards and being surrounded by loving family and friends really helped Clete through the past eight months.
Clete is survived by his wife, Susanne of rural Hawkeye; six children, Cletus, Jr (Angie) Moser of Cedar Rapids, Louise (Bill) Johnson of Guttenberg, Dennis (Linda) Moser of Palo, Daniel (Toni) Moser of Escondido, California, David Moser of Escondido, California, and Jackie (Andrew) Dykstra of Covington; 33 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Gloria (Larry) Thompson of Arizona, David (Marianne) Moser of Davenport and Elwood (Bev) Moser of Marion and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Sharron was born December 7, 1943, in West Union, IA, the daughter of Harold and Thelma (Ruroden) Patrick. She attended elementary school in Elgin moving to Hawkeye and graduated from North High School in West Union in 1962. On Jan 25, 1964, she married the love of her life Robert Erickson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, IA and to this union 4 children were born. Sharron was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and worked various jobs throughout her life. When Sharron wasn’t home playing solitaire, catching up with friends and family on Facebook or spending time with her late dog Chanelle, you could always catch her at numerous events supporting her children and grandchildren, and you could definitely find her listening to some old school country music and of course, Elvis. Sharron loved life and was a giver. She gave many hours volunteering at church and for the community, taking care of her grandchildren during summer breaks and after school, and being there for her children when they needed her.

Gary, son of Glen and Lois (Smid) Tubbs was born May 18, 1951, at the New Hampton Hospital. He was baptized and confirmed at the Alpha Methodist Church. Gary graduated from North Fayette High School in 1969. Following his graduation, Gary continued his education at Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, earning his Associate’s Degree. He worked as a T.V. repairman at West Union T.V. Sales and Service for a few years prior to working at Clyde’s T.V. and Appliance in Manchester, until his health no longer permitted. Gary served on the Alpha Cemetery Board for many years, keeping the records and serving as Treasurer. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle in his younger years and attending auctions (was always looking for a good bargain).
Gary is survived by his sisters, Bonnie (Ken) Drilling of Riceville and Elaine (Terry) Krahn of Pine Island, Minnesota; two nieces; and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen in 1981 and mother, Lois in 2008.

She was born February 12, 1926, near Eldorado, daughter of Henry and Mildred (Osmundson) Pape.
She married Lawrence Traeger on February 8,1948 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado. To this union were born two daughters, Juliana and Jayne. Together, Lawrence and Kathleen owned and operated Traeger’s IGA in Hawkeye for 30 years. They retired in 1978. He preceded her in death in 2006.
Kathleen enjoyed many days in Harpers Ferry at their cabin. She enjoyed gardening, watching the birds, fishing and always knew the count. She loved coffee and conversation.
Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Jayne (Ken) Weber of Cedar Falls; four granddaughters, Megan (Joel) Etnier, Nicole (Corey) Larson, Hilary (Andy) Iehl, and Brianna (Mike) Ivory; six great-grandchildren, Owen, Ruby, Traeger, Cassidy, Anderson, Henrik; son-in-law Don (Sandi) Routh of Cedar Falls; brother Daryl Pape of Hawkeye; sister-in-law Kay Pape of Sun City, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Carol's Life will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye. There will be a luncheon and a time for fellowship at the Church on Saturday following the Celebration of Life.
Carol was born on March 20, 1940, in Hawkeye and was the daughter of Arnold and Elma (West) Pleggenkuhle. She was raised and educated in Hawkeye and graduated from Hawkeye High School. Carol attended Upper Iowa College in Fayette, IA and became a teacher and also an emphasis in art and music.
On August 5, 1962, Carol was united in marriage to Allan John Halverson at Hawkeye United Methodist Church. Two children were born to this union. Together they farmed east of Hawkeye. Carol had many ventures: teaching, worked for several floral shops, a wholesale business, a floral shop of her own for many years, master gardener, and the list goes on.
Carol was a longtime devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Hawkeye and its affiliates. She served her Church in many ways: devoted member, pianist/organist for every Sunday, fellowship snack provider, vocalist, and just an overall steward and supporter of her Church family. She loved being a teacher on many levels and sharing her talents. Carol taught many craft nights/classes, master gardener events, helped host events at Church, etc., even after she had sold her floral business and retired.
Her priorities were faith, family, and community. Carol enjoyed attending as many family gatherings and her grandchildren’s events as she could and always was good to bring a batch of her homemade cookies along. She truly enjoyed and loved her family.

Obituary Preview: Mickey J. Phillips, 62, of Farmersburg, died Thursday, September 15, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his loving family following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Hawkeye. Private family burial will be at Hawkeye Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
Mickey Joe, son of Junior “Mike” Elsworth and Margaret (Fischer) Phillips was born June 28, 1960, in Fort Atkinson. He received his education in the Turkey Valley Schools. Mickey served in the United States Army from 1977 until being honorably discharged in 1983. During his service he was stationed in North Carolina, Germany, Texas and Washington. On July 5, 1984, he was united in marriage with Tracey Maser in New Hampton. Mickey began his working career as a farm aide, prior to working at Community Action, then Northern Ag in Marquette, and has been working at Brown’s R.V. in Guttenberg for the last several years. He enjoyed working construction, train collecting, wood-work, but most of all enjoyed time with his family.
Mickey is survived by his wife, Tracey of Farmersburg, sons, Wayne Phillips of Cresco, Christopher Phillips of Farmersburg, and Joseph (Randy Black) Phillips of Mason City; mother, Margaret Phillips of Waucoma; siblings, Tommy Phillips of Waucoma, Judy Phillips of Waucoma, Wendy (Rick) Caddell of Waucoma, Susan (Robert) Lahman of New Hampton, Margie (Kelly) Kleve of Waucoma and Steven Phillips of Waucoma; mother-in-law, Connie Paschal of McGregor; sister-in-law, Margie Bentley of West Union; brothers-in-law, James Maser of Greenfield and Curtis Maser of Lake Milles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
